Elyse Siegel at HuffPost has a new story about Anthony Weiner in his campaign to humiliate Republicans into supporting, or at least not sabotaging, a robust public option.
His most recent tactic has been to publish the name of 55 Republicans–in both the Senate and the House– who are on Medicare themselves, and yet oppose making a public option available to either the uninsured or those with insurance they can hardly afford now.
On Thursday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) called on 55 Republican adversaries of the public option to give up their government-funded health insurance. The congressman argued that it is hypocritical for Senate and House members receiving “government-administered single-payer health care — Medicare” to oppose making such coverage available to the American public.
“Even in a town known for hypocrisy, this list of 55 Members of Congress deserve some sort of prize,” Weiner wrote. “They apparently think the public option is ok for them, but not anyone else.”
And from Rep. Weiner’s home page, we have the complete list:
Rep. Ralph M. Hall
Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett
Rep. Sam Johnson
Rep. C.W. Bill Young
Rep. Howard Coble
Sen. Jim Bunning
Sen. Richard G. Lugar
Rep. Don Young
Sen. Charles E. Grassley
Sen. Robert F. Bennett
Rep. Vernon J. Ehlers
Sen. Orrin G. Hatch
Sen. Richard C. Shelby
Rep. Jerry Lewis
Sen. James M. Inhofe

Rep. Henry E. Brown
Sen. Pat Roberts
Sen. George V. Voinovich
Sen. John McCain
Rep. Judy Biggert
Sen. Thad Cochran
Rep. Harold Rogers
Rep. Dan Burton
Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon
Rep. Frank R. Wolf
Sen. Christopher S. Bond
Rep. Michael N. Castle
Rep. Joe Pitts
Rep. Tom Petri
Sen. Lamar Alexander
Rep. Doc Hastings
Rep. Cliff Stearns
Rep. Sue Myrick
Rep. John Carter
Sen. Mitch McConnell
Sen. Jon Kyl
Rep. Phil Gingrey
Rep. Nathan Deal
Rep. John Linder
Rep. Kay Granger
Rep. John L. Mica

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite

Rather than term limits, perhaps we should be considering age limits.
Update: Apparently their former colleague, Chuck Hagel, agrees that the Republican Party is acting irresponsibly on the health care issue. Read and/or watch here.

Oooh. Thanks Karen. My wingnut Congressman is on the list. Time for a phone call to his office and a letter to the local paper.
You’re most welcome, Jim!
Maybe your call and letter will even generate another post?
Hypocricy is a badge of honor for the Republicans. They think gee I said or did that and got away with it so I’m right.
John McCain gets His Senate Salary, Senate Healthcare, Military pension and disability pay, along with His Social Security. This guy would have the balls to vote against any kind of healthcare for people.
To bad the Vietnanese Didn’t do a better job. This guy has in one form or an other been on our payroll for most of His life, and if You believe the public service bullshit Your the fool, He just been sucking on the taxpayers.
I am no apologist for McCain. I was never one of those in awe of him.
For once, I don’t have a congressman or a senator on this list, but that’s only because Specter recently changes parties, and has in fact, come out strongly in favor of the public option. Now, we just have to see how he actually votes!
And please don’t think it’s just Repugs:
“New figures released by New York Democratic Congress member Anthony Weiner, meanwhile, show that 151 lawmakers in both chambers are currently covered by the government-funded health program Medicare. The list includes fifty-five Republicans who Weiner says have “steadfastly opposed” the public option. Weiner said, “They apparently think the public option is OK for them, but not anyone else.”
Thats over 25 % of ALL ‘legislators’ !!
AND the other thing to think about(coming from a 62 year old) is that the Congress has over 25 % of it’s members 65 or older; per the Census Bureau, the U.S. population 65 years and over is 12.8% (male 16,901,232/female 22,571,696).
Seems to me that there needs to be a LOT of younger blood in Congress if it is to truly represent the population(besides having a LOT more representatives than 435).
Jest luv the public shaming. Especially Ron Paul!
Anyone know the url of the website that is now keeping track of U.S.ians who die for lack of medical insurance?
The sad part of it is, it doesn’t matter one little bit to the idiots that vote for them.
I’m pretty much already decided I’m not supporting Obama next time, even though I couldn’t wait to vote for him last year. But those that vote on that side will vote for an empty suit (Palin???) or ANYTHING rather than “those damnd libruls.” This is why the Republicans can get away with as much shit as they do.
Those of us on this side don’t tolerate that shit, but their voters are all in, lock stock and barrel. Idiots.
a better job at what?
So who wins a primary between Rush and Palin?
I really think that Rush, if he so chose, could be The Candidate.
Lord knows he would destroy the other Repub candidate “debaters”.
Lugar is gonna get a letter from me!
I dunno, motherfucker never has to actually respond to anyone. Maybe he wouldn’t be all that good with someone up in his face.
These rich old men are going to feed at the public trough until that box is nailed shut. How disgusting !
Maybe he wouldn’t be all that good with someone up in his face.
Oh, I agree absolutely. But on the R side, who fits the bill? Palin? (heh) Romney? Huckabee?
He could run through that weak shit pretty easy.
True dat
Gawd, could you even imagine the Limbaugh/Palin rallies??
Talk about teh stoopid being worked up in a frenzy!
Is mockery in order yet? ;)
If you wanted to find hypocrisy on the D side, I imagine it’d be easy with the ConservaDems that are pushing opt-out.
I’ll bet each and every one of them have said at some point “We don’t want the government to keep you from choosing your Doctor” yet are supporting a plan that would have the state government keep you from choosing which health insurance plan to purchase.
There’s no way in hell Limpballs is gonna run for office. He ain’t gonna leave the safety of his studio where he can hang up the phone any time. Besides, he’s making way more money in hate radio than he could ever make as president.
Plus I’m pretty sure he knows any flacidcrat would eat his lunch in a debate.
Gawd, could you even imagine the Limbaugh/Palin rallies??
actually – yes.
Is mockery in order yet? ;)
absolutely.
I don’t know anything about Weiner but I certainly applaud his actions. He and Grayson have given the Dems some spine and it’s great to see. I can’t imagine that either of them will be greeted with flowers and candy any time soon.
great move by weiner.
but there is no robust public option in any of the bills now being considered. not robust by the cpc criteria, not robust by the hcan criteria, not robust by the fdl pledge. and none of those were robust to begin with (hacker’s original proposal qualifies, but apparently that was pre-compromised away soon after single payer was pre-compromised away).
Grayson is a fighter. I think that he’s having the time of life just kicking the shit out of pretty much everybody.
Weiner – I don’t trust quite so much – he’s on TV too much, and I get the creepy feeling that he’s auditioning, or maybe just interviewing, for his next higher-paying gig.
jmo.
I don’t think political ambition, and striving for more/better health care legislation are mutually exclusive. And Weiner can be forgiven for seeing himself as the next Senator from the great state of New York, since it is very likely that he succeeds Schumer.
IMHO…
I agree, the dude is sharp.
Jason Rosenbaum is upstairs!
Eric Cantor, where’s the Republican health care bill?
I like Weiner far more than Grayson. Grayson’s looking like a cartoon character.
And utterly unrepentant about being for S/Payer.
Is Schumer going somewhere?
wrt Weiner, I hope you’re right – I’d love to have a few to believe in.
Grayson – I see the trial lawyer coming through big time. He’s just playing around, stirring up some shit, and having the time of his life.
(Which is not to say that he doesn’t absolutely believe in what he’s saying – but I recognize that grin)
I agree with that, and he’s got plenty of money without being in congress, so maybe he’s there to tell some truths and have some fun!!
Completely agree.
A political party needs hammers, and anvils, and cashmere sweaters, and wine & cheese-eaters, and Grayson is doing exactly what he was born to do – humiliate fools and liars and thieves.
And Schumer isn’t going anywhere as far as I know. Just looks like Weiner is running for the Senate.
Grayson’s looking like a cartoon character.
I both agree and disagree.
He might look cartoonish now, but he’s stirring the pot. If he can bring it to a boil, he’s already won.
Who else is calling the R’s out for what they are?
All he’s looking for is somebody to say – “Game on, baby.”
And *then*, we might actually have a game on our hands.
What in this political world is better than seeing Paul Broun simply taken apart at the joints by Alan Grayson this past Wednesday?
Noting. Nothing at all.
Thank You !!! I hadn’t seen that, but laughed my ass off all the way through.
I owe you one, newt, and I’m definitely contributing to Grayson’s campaign.
Simple stuff for a trial lawyer when one has done his preparation – but goddamn, that was fun to watch.
thanks again.
I thought you would appreciate that.
Even lawyers are telling me that Grayson comes off like a bully instead of a destroyer of myths. And even if he is a bully, so the fuck what?
But no – completely intolerant of bullshit is next to Dawg in my book, and saying it out loud is a very close second.
Even lawyers are telling me that Grayson comes off like a bully…
Again – thanks.
And as I said in my #32, he’s *looking* for a fight. He may appear to be a bully – in reality, he’s just quite easily out-lawyering a bunch of putzes who have most likely never seen the inside of a courtroom, or been involved in a good old-fashioned courtroom brawl – maybe that makes him look like a bully.
Who cares?
Right!
I half-wish Grayson had let Sensenbrenner get a word or two in edgewise, so we could see that creep dashed against the rocks, too.
I half-wish Grayson had let Sensenbrenner get a word or two in edgewise,…
Grayson – “I yield my remaining 5 seconds.”
(somebody) – “I’d like to yield my remaining time to Mr. Sensenbrenner.”
Sensenbrenner – “Mr. Speaker….”
Grayson – “My time has expired.”
HAAAH !!
Yeah, he could have crushed Sensenbrenner too – but that was some funny shit (if a bit bully-ish – *g*)
Remember the scene in Braveheart, where Mel Gibson’s character is in front of the Scottish army, staring across at an English army which had them hopelessly out-numbered – and his buddy asked William Wallace where he was going, and Wallace replied – “To pick a fight !” (?)
For some reason, Grayson just reminded me of that scene.
Love the crazy eyes in that scene.
I like Weiner.
– fgubb, from NY
Excellent! He must have been a good trial lawyer!
Challenge these Republicans to drop their Medicare and try to find private insurance. No private insurer would touch them with a 40 foot pole.
We won’t get many younger candidates until there is campaign reform…it takes some time to become a millionaire or prove your fidelity to the Party. By my quick check: it looks like 10 of those senators and 25 Reps are millionaires (some many times over).
I’m amazed about how selfish some rich people are: they complain about welfare recipients trying to get as much as they deserve and then turn around and hire accountants to make sure they take every possible government handout and IRS deduction. People like McCain are Government Welfare Kings!
Thanks to everyone for these delicious comments. I was out most of yesterday, and didn’t even know this post had been promoted until I found out in my email today.
Thanks, Jason!
Ah, yes, Sensenbrenner, who during the impeachment of 1998, reminded me of the Chris Farley character on SNL who “lived in a van, down by the river.”
Weiner is one of our Reps who is carrying the justice torch on health care reform. He is obviously brilliant and so articulate. Explaining things in a way that all can understand. Weiner is ripping up the carpet on health care reform
