Because of this, several members of the school board, who were facing reelection, let him know that his contract would not be renewed. Hence, our family's move to Oregon in the summer of 1956. Yes, race is always an issue in the South. I like to think that Charlotte's eventual school integration was made a bit easier and less violently resisted because of what my father did in helping prepare the way.
