There is a story I used long ago to tweak an online acquaintence who was a Libertarian with a giant L. It has to do with Mullholand, and the securing of sufficient water to feed the Southern California bloat.

It became known by a partner of his, whose name I won’t bother to look up, that Mulholland intended to buy up property along the San Franciscito Canyon in order to run his river down to the San Fernando Valley. This individual simply bought the last property at the mouth of the canyon and demanded a million dollars for it. (See, in those days before a strong central government, the method of public works was simply to buy up all property along the shore where your river would run.) Exorbitant in those days.

Mulholland wasn’t a man to be trifled with, so he cut a new channel and ran his stream off in a different direction. However, this allowed insufficient time for the dam to set, and when the breakwater failed, upwards of a hundred citizens perished in the flood that followed. Mulhollond was a ruined man from that day forth.

In a democracy, or a free market, there is simply no protection against a manipulating scalawag intent only on his own rewards, despite a massive general benefit gone to seed. This is the legacy of such as Lieberman. Unless the little man was in a strategic position, there would be no cause to notice him at all.

Lieberman backpedaling? Hardly. We have new ads playing in CT. I almost fell out of my seat the other night: “call lieberman and tell him you don’t want a government run public option” or some other such nonsense. This person almost fell out of bed. *Noone* in CT has the money for that kind of primetimish aired ad except . . . .the governor (who really shouldn’t be spending the money), Dodd, who else?!? Who else?!? I mean there aren’t that many likely suspects.

Lieberman reminds me of the husband cheating on his wife and finally even the alt-girlfriend he’s cheating on the girlfriend with realizes he’s always only…a cheat.
