In an endorsement eagerly anticipated by the 24 Hours/Jack Bauer fan club, Torturer-in-Chief Dick Cheney enthusiastically endorsed (cough, cough) the McCain/Palin ticket, thereby passing the thumb screws and waterboard manual to the man who was against torture before he voted to let the CIA do it in secret.
Is it just me, or does that sound like the Yahoo Palin supporters are more thrilled about this than McCain’s faithful? Digby has the answer.
Barack Obama, speaking in Pueblo, Colorado, today, had this response:
President Bush is sitting out the last few days before the election. But earlier today, Dick Cheney came out of his undisclosed location and hit the campaign trail. He said that he is, and I quote, "delighted to support John McCain."
I’d like to congratulate Senator McCain on this endorsement because he really earned it. That endorsement didn’t come easy. Senator McCain had to vote 90 percent of the time with George Bush and Dick Cheney to get it. He served as Washington’s biggest cheerleader for going to war in Iraq, and supports economic policies that are no different from the last eight years. So Senator McCain worked hard to get Dick Cheney’s support.
But here’s my question for you, Colorado: do you think Dick Cheney is delighted to support John McCain because he thinks John McCain’s going to bring change? Do you think John McCain and Dick Cheney have been talking about how to shake things up, and get rid of the lobbyists and the old boys club in Washington?
Colorado, we know better. After all, it was just a few days ago that Senator McCain said that he and President Bush share a "common philosophy." And we know that when it comes to foreign policy, John McCain and Dick Cheney share a common philosophy that thinks that empty bluster from Washington will fix all of our problems, and a war without end in Iraq is the way to defeat Osama bin Laden and the al Qaeda terrorists who are in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
So George Bush may be in an undisclosed location, but Dick Cheney’s out there on the campaign trail because he’d be delighted to pass the baton to John McCain. He knows that with John McCain you get a twofer: George Bush’s economic policy and Dick Cheney’s foreign policy – but that’s a risk we cannot afford to take.
Update: Statement by Joe Biden:
If you ever had any doubt that John McCain would continue George Bush’s policies — you can put those to rest. Just today, Vice President Cheney came out and endorsed John McCain. Do we need any more proof? I’m not surprised. Dick Cheney has been wrong on everything else the last eight years. He’s on a roll.

Nice early endorsement there by the veep.
I’m still upset with Obama because he keeps saying McCain did the right thing on torture. Just the opposite; McCain brokered the “compromise” that allows Bush to define what constitutes torture.
Obama knows that. My guess is that he’s trying to box McCain in to an anti-torture position to help reverse the policy next year. Just a guess.
“he’s looked in the face of evil and he did not flinch”
hmmm
and that face of evil isssssss
Hmmmm. Is this more evidence that McCain is just a patsy for the Rethugs, and they really don’t want him to win?
I mean, at least Bush has had the sense to keep his mouth shut. Surely Cheney knows his endorsement won’t help…
he’s looked in the face of evil and he did not flinch
Except, of course, McCain did flinch. And make films for the enemy. And give them information beyond name, rank and serial number. And allow himself to be shown off to visiting dignitaries. Of course, he was tortured, and who among us knows how we might respond to such?
But Dick, it’s a topic you know nothing about, except in the abstract as it was described to you in the real Situation Room, just before you authorized actual torture procedures on actual earthlings.
may it be the kiss of death
Digg this excellent post please.
My guess is that Obama takes a centrist position on everything because he thinks that will maximize his chances of winning the election. Just a guess.
“he’s looked in the face of evil and he did not flinch”
Is that while shaving?
that would be a great play, let’s hope you’re right
In the mirror
As he mentions Palin as VP, Cheney looks like he threw up in his mouth
Was Wyoming in play?
I think the House seat (Wyoming At Large) is in play and since that’s the seat Cheney held, he probably feels some proprietary interest
Cool so now the MSM can ask if the endorsement of McCain comes with a deal for a pardon on war crimes for Bush and Darth if McCain should win.
how does obama need mccain to help reverse the policy? obama can do that by executive order.
a less sympathetic interpretation would be that if obama describes the MCA accurately then he’s calling out all the dems who voted for it as supporters of torture. and it’s makes him looks bad for not attempting a filibuster (and his less than inspiring statement from the senate floor prior to his vote). sad to say, given obama’s actions on fisa and his declaration that he doesn’t see anything illegal in the actions of the bush administration, i think the evidence is against your guess.
i hope that cheney is so despised, even by republicans, that this endorsement will backfire.
Fivethirtyeight and the rest are not showing Wyoming in play how do the picks up a seat but not win the state for Obama?
Doesn’t Wyoming have only one House seat so that would make the race state wide.
This is one of the reasons why I think the MSM is underestimating Obama’s support.
He will help move those undecided and independent voters that the MSM assumes will break for McCain.
Never mind that losing a war and an economic recession normally favor the party out of power…unless he is Black.
Well thats the Common Wisdom in the MSM although they don’t say it, but they have no facts that I can find to back it up.
Interesting thought. Of course, the VP did not stick around to answer questions. He’s now back at an undisclosed location finishing up on ruining the country
facts? can’t use facts. facts have a known liberal bias and that would undo the “balance”
So ask McCain or is the straight talk express on lockdown?
I believe it’s an open seat and the Dem almost knocked off the now retiring incumbent in ‘06.
so yeah, it’s quite possible for a Dem to win the congressional seat and have Obama lose the state.
Silly Me! I forget the MSM are in Wonderland.
Explain how does Obama lose but the Dems win a house race when voting for a Dem is seen as helping Obama who is expected to win anyway?
Would Cheney have tortured John McCain ?
It looks like attacks on the family are fair game again for the GOP.
I have a tough time keeping their fair play rules in order.
So, let’s see, criminal acts of a politicians’ children, not fair game. Criminal acts of distant relatives, fair game.
Got it.

That guy to the left of Darth is smiling cause Darth did not shoot him in the face.
Book Salon up at the Mothership
McCain was a fighter pilot who dropped bombs the Al Quieda on 9/11 used their planes as a bomb the only difference was a declaration of war.
But since torture doesn’t work all that often the choice to torture is more about revenge.
OT This is hilarious

Jabba The Cheney’s endorsement provides validation to the deep thinkers who are already McCain voters. It repulses everyone else.
Was there any money in it for Angler? That might explain it.
If Obama doesn’t bring Cheney and his wicked step-son to justice America is gone already.
At that moment he coughed up a dungbeetle from the charnel wreck of his insides, and had to quickly hide it with his hand. Notice?
Oops, I was talking about his initial endorsement of McSame.
