Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), who is challenging incumbent longest-serving governor and all-around goodhair Rick Perry, announced today that she won’t leave her Senate seat until she beats him in the primary next March.
Hutchison said months ago that she would leave the Senate by the end of November. Now, she says, she must stay in Washington to fight against Democratic health care and environmental legislation.
“These issues are too important to leave the fight to a newly appointed freshman senator,” Hutchison said in a written statement. “A newly appointed senator would be selected in the midst of a political storm. And will need on-the-job training in the midst of a crisis.”
The new freshman Senator would, of course, been appointed by her opponent, Governor Rick Perry. So much for Laura Bush’s chance to follow fellow First Lady Hillary Clinton to the United States Senate!

This Bimbo is a putz, I was hoping She would go back to Texas and stay. Like a bad penny she keeps coming back.
She has been one of the most useless U.S. senators there has been, Yet people fell all over Her.
P. S. Then after She got Back to Texas, we could give it to Mexico.
It sounds to me like she’s hedging her primary bets: if she wins the gubernatorial primary, she’ll resign to run for governor in the general. But if she loses to Perry (he’s up 12 points in the latest poll I saw) she’ll keep her DeeCee gig.
All in all, not a profile in courage.
Funny they will do anything to have a job, but have no respect for others that would like one.
Didn’t I read recently that former Houston Mayor Bill White (D) was polling strongly in a prospective special election match up to fill the seat she originally intended to vacate?
I also read that.
But I imagine KBH’s decision is more about her than the party’s chances.
This definitely puts the kibosh on a lot of others raising funds for Senate seat, particularly Republicans.
From CNN:
supposed KBH speech:
I see the Repubs still can’t do math. They called for fiscal responsibility and sent the federal deficits & debt through the roof. Now KBH says healthcare is nearly one-third of the economy. How exactly is 16% of GDP ‘nearly’ 33%?
I’ve been hearing recently how the polls show Independents are moving away from Dems. Is it really possible they’ve forgotten how the Repubs governed (if you can use that word for what they’ve done) during the Reagan-Bush-Bush era?
Dems need to win some battles so we can soon make it clear to the public what the Repub record has been and how the Clinton & Obama administrations compare. We shouldn’t let them glom all these politicians together and say they’re doing nothing, ignoring the unemployed, all crooked and the like. We need to make the distinctions clear.
I’m with you Teddy – not only hedging, but telegraphing ‘weakness’ to Capt Crazy
crap! I really wanted these two to take each other out and give us a shot at a Dem gov – and look at her, still with her damn toe in the water !%$!@%$! it was incumbent upon her team to keep the Willingham story in the news – fail. and now he’s apparently gone all in with the crazy – dammit!
Big dirty Dallas money will see she gets whatever she wants; they owe her for doing their bidding for…oh Lord how long? I saw a picture of her as a young reporter on GHWB’s campaign plane back in the 1980s and since then I refuse to listen or watch when she is giving her canned speechs.
I guess the rest of you get the same crappy e-mails from her (and Cornyn) in response to petitions/letters I’ve signed. If I wasn’t so danged old I’d be looking at Texas in my rear view mirror…as the song goes.
Maybe this move was a way to get the money flowing her way again? Perhaps she feels like people aren’t showing her enough love.
I always thought she was a dreadful person tied to the moneyed interests, but why oppose Perry? Who has he pissed off? And isn’t the Texas Governor about the least powerful governor in the country, anyway? Why fight over that?
Maybe the mansion beckons.
While the dramas unfold in the statewide offices (well OK, they’re not dramas, but bad soap operas), the state continues to turn blue under Perry’s and KBH’s feet. Just two seats away from the house going democratic.
Senator Laura Bush? oh. my. god…
I doubt she’s the least bit interested in the job
Just my 2 cents: Did you read where Cheney is going to campaign with/for KBH in Houston (where else; Bush/Baker/Oil country) in her bid for gov? Give you an idea why she is running? Perry has apparently displeased the God Squad. [I'll vote for anybody who is running against her, for whatever office.]
IMO the governor and courts of TX have been owned by the Big Oil Boys ever since those old wildcatters struck it rich in the years just before WW I and in the 1920s. They could, and did, buy everything and everyone in sight.
If you haven’t read the book, Texas Rich by Harry Hurt III, about the Hunt Oil family – I highly recommend it. [there's a rumor that the Hunt Oil family is bankrupt; I hope it's true.]
#17 continued: Here is the link to the campaign contributors for John Cornyn. I tried to get 2008 list but site is experiencing heavy traffic. In the chart you’ll find here is listed the Bass Brothers Enterprises. The Papa Bass of these brothers was one of those old wildcatters I mentioned above. The brothers spread out into all kinds of corporate fields.
In the 2008 contributors list you will find the Contran Corp. That’s Harold Simmons. He contributed $2 million to the Swiftboat ad that sunk John Kerry in 2004. He also told GWB that he would contribute $1 million to his lie-berry only if it was located at SMU. He also has funded a chair at SMU (I think in political science). Harold Simmons is also the mad genius who created the monster known as leveraged buy-out. Just Google his name – you’ll learn more than you ever wanted to know.
