In the next few weeks Rod Blagojevich, the Governor of Illinois will choose Barack Obama’s replacement in the United States Senate. Thankfully a number of progressive candidates have already tossed their names into the ring. However none would top Jan Schakowsky.
Jan is a rare commodity among Members of Congress. Not only does she know how to build power from the inside as a progressive, she also has a deep understanding of how issue campaigns are fought and won. This presents a unique opportunity – to put it simply:
Jan Schakowsky could be the next Paul Wellstone.
The magic of Paul Wellstone was not just his voting record, but his ability to use the Senate as a platform to wage progressive fights. Schakowsky in her career before she ran for Congress (In 1969 she led the fight to put freshness dates on products sold in the supermarket.) and during her time in the House has proven she knows how to get the job done.

Ms. Schakowsky wore an Obama button to the White House when he was just running for the Senate. The story is that Bush noticed it and was taken-a-back thinking, obviously, that it was Osama. Schakowsky, recognizing his reaction, said; No, Mr. President, this is Obama. He said; Oh, I’ve never heard of him. She said; You will.
She knew what we all know now. Let’s bring her on board.
