The call in North Carolina has finally been made. Barack Obama has been declared the winner of the traditionally Republican state’s 15 electoral votes — bringing his total to 364.
That survey found there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican candidate John McCain to close a 13,693 vote deficit.
North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes brings Obama’s total to 364 nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call.
Obama’s win in North Carolina was the first for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter won the state in 1976.
NBC is calling NC for Obama as well:
NEW YORK – President-elect Obama is the apparent winner in North Carolina, a symbolic triumph in a state that hadn’t voted for a Democrat in more than a generation.
Until today the ballot count in North Carolina was still too close for a call. An "apparent winner" call by NBC News means enough votes have now been tallied to indicate that a candidate has won the race, but the results may well depend upon a potential recount or final official tallies.

As Garth would say, “Excellent! Party on!”
Yay!!

What an accomplishment for a candidate about which the Clintons stated: “He cannot win.”
Nice jacket on McGeezer in the graphic, I must say.
YES!
Wish it had come in time for us to be *really* counted along with other states (for all the country to notice) but, hey! presents are always welcome, even after the due date. *G*
Yea! And we got rid of the odious Liddy Dole to boot.
suck on that mandate, bob “ow my head” novak!
hell yeah! proud to be a tar heel.
can we call it a landslide now?
Yes we can!
ahem…I think we can definitely say, “Obama’s got the mandate.”
Tommy!
Good news from Alaska if you look at the stats.
There are a substantial number of ballots still uncounted in Alaska, including many absentee ballots…224057 votes have been counted in Alaska with 55663 absentees not yet counted…plus about 5600 “questioned” ballots That’s about 20% of the total potential votes.

38,000 of 55,000 votes come from District 1 and 3 with very few from heavily Republican District 2 (Mat-Su). Given that the Stevens-Begich and Berkovich races are so close, it’s likely that these uncounted votes are going to be decisive. Judging from the District votes for State Representatives in the counted votes are from areas that went 75% or more for Democratic State candidates (Anchorage and Juneau). (~and amazing, as well, that there were ZERO challenged ballots from Mat-Su)
It may also explain the very odd situation where an election with their Governor in a Presidential campaign, and with both their Senate and House races were actually competitive would have LOWER turnout than in 2004…in an election in which national turnout was very much higher…would be low. The SOS simply hasn’t counted the votes.
I suspect that this will bring the votes back toward the late polling averages which showed both Begich and Berkovich winning against Stevens and Don Edwards).
Georgia~
Over 50,000 votes from Atlanta, Georgia haven’t been counted. This could bring down Saxby Chambliss. There is a SoS there that is another Katherine Harris-type, however.
With the possibility that Al Franken could win the Minnesota seat on the recount an additional 3 Democratic Senate seats are not out of the question.
quite a mandate this president has
now let’s see him use it
Love the pics. Classics.
Start swimming, Lindsey. (Didn’t he say he’d beat Michael Phelps before NC went blue?)
Sweet victory.
This is fantastic! I’d like to remind everyone of the stellar work on the ground that organizers did and continue to do in that state. When I visited Change To Win’s GOTV effort I was struck by how deep the organizers ties with the community are.
I am so proud of my State. ding dong the…. Had several Rep. clients say they changed their vote for Dole to Hagan because of the nasty ad about not being a Christian.
Finally, it’s a Tarheel Blue state (or Duke blue if you’re a fan of Nixon’s alma mater). I see the AP and its many customers removed the word “symbolic” from their headlines and ledes. It’s much more than that — with Governor, Senator, and eight out of 13 House seats going to Democrats.
