I know I’m a few days late with this, but it’s been a busy and hectic week for me. Lot’s of stress and worry on Monday and Tuesday, then the day or so of pinching myself, shedding uncontrollable tears of joy, experiencing delicious Schedenfreude while watching Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchannan whine, an airline experience from hell, and I find myself here on Saturday morning in Chicago and I realize that we really did it.
Yes we did! Congratulations! Yay us!
Now the hard part begins. The people on the right will not be going away, as much as we all wish they would. They are not the type to say, "Oh, our ideas must have been wrong". No they will be back. The hate, the fear, and the racism has not been vanquished, yet. We can’t sit back the way we did in the early 1990’s and let them shred President-elect Barack Obama (man, I like the sound of that!) the way they did Bill Clinton. But the Republican Party has been gravely wounded and it will be interesting to watch how they deal with this ass whupping. My popcorn popper is ready.
I am optimistic. A lot has changed since 1993, the last time a new Democratic President took office after a Republican Administration. We have the netroots, which has turned out to be more powerful than any of us could have imagined even four years ago, and we have a Democratic Party that has been re-energized with the leadership of Howard Dean and President-elect Obama. We have an enormous and enthusiastic base of new, young voters who know how to use a computer. We have a flock of new Progressive Representatives and Senators. If We The People stay active and keep pushing hard for Progressive principles we will be able to beat back the right-wing attack that is sure to come soon.

I feel optimism as well. Thank you for your post.
My first FDL post was called “Dancin’ in the Streets”:
—egregious 8 September 2007
I highly recommend pouring salt directly into that wound.
great clip
And the right wing radicals will not be going away..the Obama honeymoon is over before it even started

In fact one of the radicals was just made Chief of Staff

Leen, did you used to use another name here at firedoglake?
Justin Raimando and I are on the same page, the honeymoon is over. The right (wrong) are all ready stationed in the Obama campaign.

Nice post very optimistic but sounding the right one of caution. Because the wingnuts will no just go away! We must stay active and do everything we can to make sure that this Democratic Administration has the chance to do all the work that needs doing to repair our country and it’s institutions that BushCo so screwed up with political hacks that musty be purged from the very bottom to the very top on every department. As we have witnessed political loyalty was the most important criteria and not aptitude for the position that was used to place people in positions within the government in every department. Let us Hope that it can be reasonably done!!

Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn and Ralph Nader have all shared their reserved optimism for an Obama administration. A reality check

screw ralph nader
Actually I’m less worried about the Wingers than I am of the Benedict Arnolds within the Democratic Party.
The Wingers are easily identifiable, and the brand they’ve been selling has been discredited.
However, the MSM has only begun to gush over, say, Rahm Emanuel. Rahmbo, that sorry SOB who, in 2006, pushed middle/right Democratic candidates over good progressive ones; refused to fund those Progressives who made it through primaries, and just generally was a shit.
You can be sure Rahm will be keeping decent folks from gaining entrance to Obama’s White House, but will provide a season pass for all the AIPAC types.
These guys will kill us from within.
Ralph tells the truth. He just will not ever be elected. He is too honest.
did you see my question at 5 for you?
Citizen Raven:
“mash Saxby”
We’re fallin’ in with ya Brother Freebird…what’s the order of battle, what will win it for Martin besides a boost from the President-elect, what is needed down there that we ken help with?
And didja hear my call this mornin’ a couple a threads back? I’d like ta find out how this “Oxdown Gazette” thing works because it seemas to me we could get a bunch of our vet brothers (and sisters) out and put a diary or two tagether about the politics of reintegration for returning vets. How do diaries get posted? How would you suggest we put a cooperative project like that together…could you coordinate the technical logistics?
Counterpunch, Justin Raimando, Steve Clemons at Washington Note and others are writing about this appointment and what it signals
I have one name
always had ‘leen’ as your name on firedoglake?
I’m teetering on the edge of the lake. I love you but I’m getting as sick of some of these people as they are of me.
This piece is by Rev Jackson Day. He was a chaplain and was with us at Dewey Canyon III. Veterans Day
Citizen Leen:
Ralph Nader is all about Ralph Nader…he is a white middle class Reverand Moon…and havin canvassed for a couple a PIRGS back in the day and worked for a couple a left wing Moonie operations like Clean Water Action I am a realiable witness to his heavy handed and exploitative tactics which have allowed him to get things done (for himself) through others without it costin him anything.
No, “screw Ralph Nader” and put the bastard in the trashcan of history where he belongs…he long ago lost whatever legitimacy he earned in the 60′ and 70’s.
i’m not sick of you. and i just got back here the last few days.
and ‘leen’-has ‘leen’ been your complete and only name on firedoglake?
Palin, Lieberman and Bachman kissing Obama’s ass
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
If Dennis Ross is made the Middle East envoy nothing will change in the middle east. He has been referred to as a “lawyer for Israel” These are strong signals to people in the middle east who have been very unhappy with the U.S’s lopsided policies in the I/P conflict
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article9933.shtml
I din mean you:)
Nope. You can’t leave us stranded out here without your voice. Who’s going to be sarcastic along with me?
I would never vote for Ralph Nader but he has every right to run and he has done amazing work. He makes solid points,is brilliant and articulate.
Nader:
If one of the dreaded “wingnuts” said some shit like that people would go all to fucking pieces.
He has every right to kiss my ass.
i know.
: )
gotta go let the dog out.
Norske,
Looks to me like you go here and blaze away
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/post
“now the hard part begins” Would really like to witness Obama take on Professor Norman Finkelstein, Professor Juan Cole and Flynt Leverett as advisers on the middle east. Put some balance into the picture.
Having advisers from different perspectives on the middle east would send a strong message.
http://www.normanfinkelstein.com/
Citizen Raven:
” I’m teetering on the edge of the Lake…I’m getting as tired of some of these people as they are of me.”
No, Brother Raven, don’t quit on the whole platoon ‘cuz of conflict with a couple a grunts…in a sense your impatience is a product of interaction in a democratic forum (well, as democratic as this kinda forum gets with lurking censors). You are not only loved here but RESPECTED and your voice is important…I don’t think you have a clue how much of an impact you have on the direction of thought and response in any argument or topic in which you engage …I for one can’t possibly pick up the slack if you were ta bail on FDL, I don’t have the chops you have. So do whatcha hafta do…take a step back when ya need to and lean on yer brothers and sisters here when ya hafta.
we all have one name, but has ‘leen’ been the only name you have used on firedoglake?
he speaks the truth
What did we “Win” this election for a new administration? Well we won not having a republican administration. The war sadly issue is a big compromise keeping misslie attacks on civilians where Al Queda will operate. Comestic will be corporate bailout. Rights will in jeopardy of permanaent loss to our constitution…and Obamais a constitutional lawyer?
Some improvement on health care and social safety net and a weak tea energy policy without the energy industry hated carbon tax. So the 5 million new job election promise wil be hard to come by.
The financial industry will loss hige employment as it was scam paper production industry which is dead in the water.
Environment…can her control big coal…doubtful. Obama will be more conservative than Clinton. To stop the political move to the right will take a huge level of effort. Hoping that it will go better. The government can no bail out the banking industry, the auto industry, the insurance industry, Main street and the middle class which seems to be last in line.
Then there is the state and local government. Screaming at the top of my lungs stay all over these pols like a cheap suit. We won jack shit we are in a wrestling match. We have engaged the enemy in a daily struggle.
That’s nice of you to say. When I find myself so pissed off I can’t sleep (which I don’t do well anyway) I begin to wonder what the fuck I am doing. 59 monday, 42 years to the day I stepped across the line, and I know how short this whole deal is. My favorite buddhist nun, Pema Chodron, put is this way:
you made your point
Citizen Leen:
“I have one name”
Yes but have you had another “handle” here before you were “Leen”?
Raven I don’t find you offensive in the least! Sayt here and help in the fights that must still be fought. You have always fought for the Vets and I would bet that we will need to continue to fight for the vets in the future! the wingnuts will not go away and the Veterans seem to be one of their favorite targets they can try and starve for proper funding!
So don’t let a few wobbler’s discourage you! they are just thinned skinned and probably never did serve!
blah blah blah
I’m not sick of you at all. I look forward to and enjoy your comments a lot…mostly see the early morning ones on the Attaturk and Swim posts. I am not a vet (but was married to a Vietnam Marine vet for 10 yrs about 20 yrs ago)and I think your idea is terrific. I remember how hard it was when he and our friends came back, and of course they are still feeling the repercussions these many years later. BushCo has horribly abused our armed services the past 8 years and those returning need our support and understanding and I think you, Norske, et al. can do a lot of good reminding/educating the rest of us.
norske, i posted my first one on oxdown today, not perfect, but i did it!
go norske!!
type and submit, however, when i went to preview, it lost all of my spacings, so, i had to do them over and it screwed it up, made it harder to read. oh well.
you can do it.
the trolls are everywhere
If you were married to a Nam vet you are a Nam vet IMHO.
thx
Leen always leen.
Who is this clown?
no scenes of dancing from Birmingham, Alabama, Little Rock, or Salt Lake City?
heh.
My favorite new oxymoron:
“Salt Lake City nightlife.”
Raven I was one who encouraged your come back when peeps were saying “has anyone seen Raven”? Time to man up a little you have a tantrum when people don’t line up with your opinion which is DO NOT CRITCISE OBAMA.
He is not without fault like all of us, That is manipulative behavior that will not get you what you want. Are you really a Hawk? FISA…WAR..Bailout what part of that is so hard not to criticize? I may be missing a whole lot here and am willing to learn . But you haven’t made the case. 6% popular vote when congress and the Bushco have under 20% approval tells me Obama has appealed to a lot of comservatives with his agenda and choices. You want to fold up ypur tent and take your marbles your choice me I am and always will be a peace advocate if that means fighting for peace count me in. I have, as do others here have the right to stand for what they believe. Why does that make you uncomfortable?
Norman Finkelstein. Such good advice on how to deal with difficult situations in the middle east. What a brilliant man. Sure wish Obama would take him on as an adviser
This is a great listen

But some of them hide.
Citizen Raven:
Holy shit, man…that’s what I’m talkin’ about…think on that thought from the good sister Pema Chodron and let the thread unwind where it will and follow it until you find a place that is accepting your current self and encouraging of a new one.
Hang in there, Brother, we can’t lose too many of the old timers from the cadre and still be able ta train the kids.
Book Salon up at the Mothership Growing Up Gay In America hosted by Peterr.
I appreciate your analysis.
Nader is interested in only one thing…. his bloated ego. He just loves for all of us to stroke it. He was once for the consumer now it is all about him and his baggage of an ego… I can’t wait for him to just fade away and the MSM just ignores him.
rofl
and flat-out lie! only using half of their name!
right ‘kath’? ‘leen’?
Wow! You!
Sometimes you just make me feel a little slow.
i could be wrong, if i am, my apologies.
I guess any of us could be wrong, at any time.
However, you could be correct (as usual, your highness) and I’d bet on ya. I don’t think you owe anyone an apology. Certainly not me.
And to think this thread started with dancing in the streets.
i’m still dancin’!!
rofl!!
take care demio!

if you bring up a tough subject “the hard work” the attacks begin and trolls show up.
Remind me of when and how you encouraged me to come back.
screw nader
You all ready made that point
And well, don’t you think?
