Ted Haggard has resurfaced via an article in the Denver Post. He claims he was sexually abused as a child and that’s what led to his later sinful sucking.
Sigh.
The quote I found most telling:
"I hate this thing, but there were times I loved it," he told himself. "I hate this thing, but there were times I loved it. I hate this thing, but there were times I loved it."
Ah, love.
I can’t quite find it in me to heap hot coals on the broken, twisted, traumatized mess that is Ted Haggard. Okay, I’m a shrink, so I’m not going either to trivialize or automatically presume the veracity of his childhood sexual abuse explanation. The "abuse excuse" has been fabricated before by any number of people, and reports of such childhood victimization cannot, clinically, either be dismissed or presumed to be true with certainty.
Let’s suspend belief or disbelief for a moment in Haggard’s neatly structured tale of victimization in search of a redemption narrative of forgiveness by his Evangelical constituents. None of us has direct access to observe what may have happened to him as a kid. But we have observed a real trauma in his life, and he talks about it in the article:
Haggard sounded critical of church leaders who, he said, missed the opportunity to demonstrate unconditional Christian love and forgiveness after the scandal broke.
"There came a moment in my life when were so alone and there was so much despair that I was suicidal," Haggard said. "The world would be better without me."
He said he would lie in bed, "paralyzed with shame," at times unable to pray, until Jesus came to him and dispelled the darkness.
The shunning he experienced left him suicidal and reeling. Of this we have no doubt.
And as tragic as traumatization caused by childhood sexual abuse is, the trivialization of those sufferings by religio-political hacks for cheap political purposes represents another kind of abuse, the cooptation of people’s nuanced life experiences to serve one’s own hostile agenda.
Which brings us back to love.
Haggard sabotaged his carefully constructed life through actions fueled by a natural part of himself that sought expression. Sometimes the impulse to heal oneself is messy: such is the vital need to love and be loved authentically.
The part of his life that sought love, that part which he, by his own admission, not only hated, but "loved," had first to find a way to explode his life that it might save his life. But Ted’s traumatized, broken adherence to the anti-human, anti-love ideology that imprisoned him before imprisons him still, leaving him a distorted, pathetic shell of a man, looking for love in all the wrong places.
I suspect Ted’s final reckoning with the "demons" he needs most wholly to embrace has not yet come, and I hope he survives that final flame out to emerge, bit by bit, a more whole and healthy man, intact. I note that, according to Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, in spite of the ballot initiatives November 4th, national tolerance for homosexuality has never been higher: 54% in a national survey endorse the statement, "Homosexuality is a way of life that should be accepted by society," while only 38% endorse the statement, "Homosexuality is a way of life that should be discouraged by society."
For Ted’s sake and the sake of hundreds of thousands like him, and their families, let’s hope he catches up with the trend soon, before he does end up killing himself, directly or indirectly.

Great post, Pach. The linked article says he claims his marriage is stronger than ever. I give it six more months, max.
Thanks, Pach. I hope he does find a way to be healthy, but how does one accomplish that when so much damage is already done?
The part that scares me is that his make-believe “god” came to him and dispelled the darkness. This guy is in need of a serious dose of reality!
Ted, face it; you’re a pole-smoker! There’s nothing wrong with that, unless you continue to adhere to your bizarre fixation with magical invisible people.
Whiney self-victimization makes me want to puke!
Some people can make it, with good friends and support, or a good shrink and a lot of patience, preferably both.
There is such a thing as human resiliency, the species is not just a bundle of dysfunction, fury and doom.
Love is actually powerful, but as I say, the crumbs he’s getting are like as not to kill him because they require him to try to be what he is not. And that, of course, is not love.
practicing your palin impersonation?
i just love the hypocricy of these people. constant source of amusement,
Interesting that this is coming out just as Foley appeared in an interview blaming his bad boy behavior on being molested as a child…I guess this is the all embracing excuse for anything bad you do sexually in later life (not suggesting Haggard’s homosexual behavior was bad, just his hypocritical stance attacking this kind of behavior just a he was indulging in it!)

This is good news, even better for republicans some how.
You’re going to need a shower after visiting that site and a pressure washing if you click through to any of the comments.
He only misses his career opportunities..can’t live with being a ‘regular’ guy.
You betcha.
Screwed up the link.
A lotMostAll of us have, ahem, issues. And, fortunately, most of us don’t have to deal with our issues on the national stage. I do hope Ted finds the peace he seeks. Somehow. Someday.I’m sorry, I can’t find it in me to give him any space here.
He made this bed of hypocrisy and has to sleep in it. We are all creatures of out actions and there are some actions that cannot be reconciled regardless of the ‘reasons’ (ie: excuses)
Pastor Ted used his position of power at the pulpit to further a campaign of hate and abuse on gay folks, teenagers in trouble with sex, and liberals in general. We will have this hatred around for a long time, longer than Pastor Ted will be on this earth. The hatred he spewed from his place in the Church has turned good reverent people into the worst of haters. These people will never be anything else.
If he suffered as a child, well, that’s tough. There was plenty of opportunity for him to get help while he was one of the most powerful Christian leaders in the country. Now, I find this revelation rather coincidental.
He used his pulpit to do harm, to spread the Word of Hate and Intolerance. He deserves no consideration, no pity; he deserves only to be exiled to oblivion.
Ted who?
Thanks for sharing that Ted.
Kthanxbie.
you sure that’s not a pick of ahnold ..
he threw the drugs into the trash can.
remember: there’s a meth thud to his manness.
Well, as a pastor, he lead his church to a type of Christianity that was unable to embrace him with love after his fall. I wonder if he has made that connection yet?
As a Christian myself, I know there are a lot of flavors of the religion, and far too few truly embrace the Love that is supposed to be at the core of our faith. But love is a powerful thing and it can sometimes break through the layers of orthodoxy, legalism and dogma that we try to bury it under.
Ted could never have gotten as high as he did in the Evangelical community without being a skilled liar.
Thanks Pach. Why would ole Ted think that he has anything on the come? His personal crusade of intolerance all but guarantees those he seeks forgiveness from have been poisoned against that which he now claims to deserve.
I was astounded when I saw that this morning.
Unfortunately, he also attempts to continue the theme that the abuse he claims to have received as a child “made him gay.”
Cute. I understand your distress.
But, um, you just did give him space here.
You did.
PS, I’m sorry for his hurt too.
No one should be the recipient of abuse.
Mark Foley says the same thing.
OT: This is odd about Doughy Pantload’s wife…or is it?!?!

A little pick and roll perhaps?
Lot’s of sad stuff here.
This thread doesn’t make it better.
Or change anything.
Special Blue America visit from Congressman-elect Jim Himes at the Mothership.
Haggard strikes me as someone who craves attention. Many performers are. To be denied it, on top of all the other negative emotions he’s going through, must make the pain that much worse.
Is this Henry Rollins channeling Ted Haggard?
You know, this garbage (I did it because I was sexually abused as a child) has a really insidious side.
It feeds into the religious right’s beliefs that homosexuals are made, not born. In their weltanschauung that makes homosexuality a choice, and therefore sinful because it appears to run counter some verses in Leviticus and Romans.
Good observation something is up perhaps the GOP is admitting their dirty laundry now to purge it?
Forgiveness has to be earned, not bestowed upon request. If Haggard really wants to make up for the harm he has done, then he should be spreading the gospel of tolerance for all folks who as he claimed to be, dealing with their demons. Let’s see him do that for five years and then we’ll talk forgiveness. Until then, get to work, Ted.
I hate this thing but I love it. Quote-unquote.
His penis???
I’m a bit confused by your response. Are you trying to be satirical? Perhaps you find my lack of compassion for Pastor Ted a bit disconcerting.
I consider myself as Liberal as anyone here, perhaps a bit too much at times. But there comes a time when reality must creep into our lofty progressive goals. That means we have to listen to everyone, even those who don’t agree with us. America isn’t ready to have our Progressive Agenda crammed down its throat. We have to give them an opportunity to grow accustomed to our goals, offer constructive criticism, and help us tweak them to into accomplishment. What it doesn’t mean is we give up the store like Pelosi and Reid are want to do; we offer compromise only when it has a real and tangible counterpart on the Republican side. Give AND take.
Reality isn’t liberal, nor is it conservative. It’s there and it’s a bitch. The wingnuts found that out the hard way on Election Day. Our reality is to make sure that our next few steps are based in the Real World and not Liberal Paradise.
We have to be careful not to make the same mistakes the GOP did. We know by example what we must and mustn’t do. We also know who the real criminals were during the last eight years. Pastor Ted represents the worst of them – a powerful, charismatic megalomaniac using his platform to frighten the ignorant and give them cause to repress, even curtail the rights of good, loyal Americans. Karma, thankfully, caught up with him before he could continue his purge of this country. Unfortunately, there are many more where he came from.
My screed about his irreverence was aimed at making sure he can’t continue to harm our cause from within his exile. Any compassion or consideration would be wasted and counterproductive in these important days ahead. Screw him; we got better, more important things to put our energy into.
Let people like Ted Haggard and Mark Foley twist in the wind. Put Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Hugh Hewett, and the rest of that cesspool up onto that same petard and leave them there. Unfortunately, as they say, no matter how clean you keep your kitchen, the rats are never far away. These asspimples will not be too far from the limelight. I just think we have more important things to do.
Again, I say: Ted who?
It feeds into the religious right’s beliefs that homosexuals are made, not born. In their weltanschauung that makes homosexuality a choice, and therefore sinful because it appears to run counter some verses in Leviticus and Romans.
Yours is the crux of the matter as I see it. He plays into a theory of homosexuality that allows all Christians to continue to hate and try to destroy homosexuals. Maybe they’ll try to do more about child abuse, maybe they won’t. But they will be left with the feeling that if boys aren’t abused by gay men, then they won’t turn out gay.
He continues to destroy love and authenticity as he begs for forgiveness and love. Who is the authentic Ted? If he doesn’t share that, how can he ever get what he isn’t giving?
Know this probably will not be read but in case anyone checks back, I have this to add.
Are there not many among us who have upon growing up with, living with, or raising a child, usually an adolescent child, who did not know, or expect that that child was homosexual? I know I have. I knew with certainty that a young very talented organist who played in my church and went on to get advanced degrees in his field was gay from the time he was nine. No abuse or parenting caused it. He is now an open gay man living happily with total support from his family and friends.
I do not doubt that Haggard may have been subjected to abuse at a very young age. It happens. I do however doubt that this was the cause of his being gay. He is gay. No amount of excuse, praying or rehabilitation is going to wish that away.
Only when he comes to terms with who he really is, will he be able to be truly free. What a shame. You can be Christian and gay. It’s time the Ted Haggards of this world realized that and stopped the “love the (gay) sinner and hate the (gay) sin” attitude that is so prevalent among Christian fundamentalists. Until then, he will hate himself.
Thank you. Sorry I didn’t get back sooner. Hope you’re checking. You’re right of course. It seems though that his chances of receiving the love in order to heal are pretty slim, given the characters he’s trusted himself to. As I said, hope he finds his way.
“I do not doubt that Haggard may have been subjected to abuse at a very young age. It happens. I do however doubt that this was the cause of his being gay. He is gay. No amount of excuse, praying or rehabilitation is going to wish that away.”
Agreed. Unfortunately, those who are hoping to help him are also those who would believe that he’s made a choice. That’s what I meant by “damage” in my previous post to Pach @2. I had a close friend many years ago. Her son was also obviously gay. Sweet kid.
Don’t fight the feeling, Ted!
I’m acquainted with with four women who were sexually abused as children — one by a heterosexual Catholic priest, the others at the hands of neighbors or relatives — and not one of them has molested a child in their adulthood. While they have all experienced some form of PTSD, not one of them is an abuser and all of them have been successful at mothering. I’m just sayin’ …
Dear Pach,
Yeah, I actually slept on this for a night before replying.
imho, you buried the lede:
You left unwritten the “genuine article.” But I’m not giving up on you. Today or tomorrow or maybe even the next day is still looking good for the effort and/or adventure.
I think you nailed it, but you dallied in story lines we’ve already seen a thousand times, only with different characters. Aren’t you ready for another angle?
Too often these days, “nuanced” connotes “trivial.” ( Think about it). When really, as in the instance of “nuance” in shooting pool: angles, inches and a little English means the difference between making your shot vs. setting up a better shot for your opponent.
Glad I waited to see how the conversation developed on this thread — A Big Thank You to “davidaquarius” for illustrating (the lede)
To wit:
@ 13
and @ 33
and to end both comments @ 13 and 33:
The fact that davidaquarius bothered to stop by and comment not once, but twice belies his (and others like him) pretentious posturing on the matter. Out of the gate, he’s off the mark and to the extent that he really doesn’t care about Mr. Haggard personally, well then yes, the broad brush-aside-strokes really are convenient to an agenda of hate. How expedient. Hypocrite.
Here are a few nuances to examine — see if it changes the schedenfreudilicious-metering:
What if this were a story of a well known [Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, Wiccan or say, garden variety Protestant] spiritual leader, who found some tenet of their faith to be identity-fracturing and at odds with who they felt themselves to be? Would it be quite so “progressive”-PC to revel in this guy’s struggle?
Or is it especially OK because this guy’s an Evangelical?
What is common to any agenda of hate is this:
Play the numbers game, find a minority to strong-arm.
If you already are a minority, seeking the easiest-get of advantages, find a minority smaller than you.
Shallow, surfacey, predictable as all get out is the numbers game.
Nuance is the way out. Prop 8 and all its attendant *cough*nuances*cough* are staring us in the face.
In closing, here’s the practical application:
I challenge you, Pach, to write a soul-searching expose on your sense of how flying at 100,000 feet in order to quickly dispatch with you know, real live human beings, serves the purposes of the many fracturing hate movements afoot in our society at the moment.
I challenge you, Pach, to unearth your own “nuances” on the matter. Put a face, a name, a past experience to each of the warring factions within you. Elucidate the the “ROI quandry,” specifically, the pros and cons of expedience in processing humans, group membership, and assessing threat or opportunity vs. the slog of messy categories that defy the formulation of false dichotomies, but at the cost of time and effort and ZOMG, maybe some empathy. Explore the spurious notion that ’snubbery and disdain’ and *cough*exile*cough* assures control and safety for any particular cause. Further, explore the counterproductive aspects of such tactics and the overall strategy from which it is borne. Here’s a good one: explore Athenian democracy vs. Socratic/Platonic counter-elements in light of Prop 8.
And you know what, Pach. I’ll be around to see you through this search. (My fondest memories of one Thanksgiving dinners was meeting one particularly enlightened gentleman who happened to be a member of the LGBTQ community who once said, “ours is not to see through one another, but to see one another through.”)
Feel free to respond to me here, in public, where we can have some semblance of a direct discussion, you know, kinda like the way due process lends credence to the judicial system. Yeah, we could do that for journalism. I’ll be here for you, Pach. Wouldn’t count on “davidaquarius” though. He has much more important things to do.
For him it’s too late. Always has been.
For you and me, and Ted and California and the rest of the world, there’s still time.
