On Sunday Barack Obama will officially resign from the Senate:
"It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate. In a state that represents the crossroads of a nation, I have met so many men and women who’ve taken different journeys, but hold common hopes for their children’s future. It is these Illinois families and their stories that will stay with me as I leave the United States Senate and begin the hard task of fulfilling the simple hopes and common dreams of all Americans as our nation’s next President," said President-elect Barack Obama.
It’s no secret here that I support Jan Schakowsky as his replacment. If you do to – please sign our petition to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Here are five reasonswhy Jan is the best choice:
1. Proven Progressive: By lifetime voting record she is the ninth most progressive member of Congress.
2. Obama Ally: Schakowsky was one of the first members of Congress to endorse him during his Senate race.
3. Against the War in Iraq from the start: "Schakowsky opposed the Iraq war resolution and was a founding member of the Out-of-Iraq Caucus"
4. Look at the awesome legislation she has introduced.
5. She has fought from the outside, as a comsumer advocate and Director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens from 1985-1990" This is important. She understands how campaigns off the Hill, can influence on the Hill and will work with the progressive community to get the job done.
As Chris Bowers wrote:
She votes right on everything and, beyond that, is notable as a fighter for introducing progressive legislation that is even included in the Responsible Plan To End the War In Iraq.

Ari – i just looked up Schakowsky’s record on FISA modification and she earns a perfect score according my toughest standards: voted no on S.1927 last August, against the PAA extension in February, no on H.R.6304 in June and she cosponsored Holt’s far superior H.R.3782 which was blocked by house leadership last fall.
only 4 other members of the House can say the same.
wow.
details in this fisa diary (you’ll have to scroll down or search for her name).
I say her interview today and she comes accross as someone I would want in the Senate. Her record is progressive and for that alone she would be very valuable in the Senate as a voice we here at the Lake would like to get behind!!
So based on that I signed the petition!!
Jan has shown tremendous leadership. She would be a great choice.
Thanks selise!
I just signed the petition.
Schakowsky would be a good choice but it’s up to Blagojevich.
Paulson currently on the NewsHour saying what a great job he is doing despite his sucking so badly at it.
Thanks Ari.
digg
Dugg and petition signed. Thanks Ari!
Hey Pups Digg this Post and get behind Jan!!
i’ve been a real hard ass on FISA (jane can vouch for that *g*) and the house dems – and i can’t find anything but good stuff on schakowsky – it looks like the real deal to me because she did the right thing on stuff (like the feb PAA vote or cosponsoring holt’s bill) that wasn’t getting any play in the blogosphere.
damn. i’m seriously impressed.
she’s wonderful, it would be a dream come true to move her up to the Senate.
Yep, and talking about how quickly they moved…nothing about having to backtrack and start over. But, we are supposed to believe him….NOT
Hey mods, both nahant and I dugg this post. I’m not sure what your options are to make sure it receives all the diggs it deserves.
michelle obama and the fashionitas?
uh-oh ES, I hope your toes don’t hurt
digg
and reddit
and for those of you still not redditing, it’s easy and effective
and Boo too, nahant’s the digg at the link
wrong show.
Signed Dugg ok What are Jan’s chances? I though Jesse Jackson Jr had the inside track? Anyone up on the inside details of Illinois politics? I’m a bit rusty.

From the comments of Chris Bowers post.
Who is Blago’s friend who can do something for him? Its his choice.
Lehrer is asking questions. I’m shocked. The bailout hasn’t worked. Banks aren’t lending. You aren’t doing anything for homeowners. Nothing for the auto industry.
Paulson keeps either that what he needed to do was stabilize the financial
house of cardssystem or goes and says how much he has done, except he hasn’t.Lehrer: So you are comfortable with what you have done?
Paulson: Yes
The interview ends here to extinguish Paulson’s pants which suddenly burst on fire.
Where the hell is EPU, this has gotta be some kind of a damn record. nahant, Eureka Springs, and I all dugg this post. It looks to me as though all three are taking. I’m afraid that splits the digg total three ways.
we need her. what are the chances? anyone got a guess?
Given Jan’s record on FISA, I have to assume she’s an underdog.
paulson: i can exhort banks to lend, but i’m not a regulator.
It happens. I just make sure I go back and digg the one which stuck with the original post. In this case, nahant.
No one in Illinois really knows either. For a guy who has been elected governor twice, is highly unpopular, and is likely to be indicted at some point, almost nobody has been able to figure him out.
Jesse Jackson Jr. has been lobbying for the spot as has Duckworth but it’s just as likely that Blago would appoint his horse if he had one.
Excellent questions.
FWIW, this didn’t help his son’s chances, Jesse Jackson on Obama: ‘Wanna Cut His Nuts Off”
Warning, nsfw, the youtube opens with a few seconds of Bill O’Reilly.
Maybe Illinois politics is complicated.
Thank you for watching so I don’t have to.
he can’t fix it. just treading water until he gets out. cds is maybe 45 tril worth of problem. we screwed.
Now that no corporate media bobblehead has to worry about access anymore they feel free to ask the questions they should have been asking all along. Although the Faux Nues stable of horse’s asses will continue with their tired old shit. I’m waiting for the clip of Hannity strokin’ out in the middle of one of his other planet rants.
I’d laugh about Paulson’s pants if this all weren’t such a painful nightmare for the good citizens, instead of a gold rush for the perps.
He was an important de-regulator when he was at Goldman Sachs though.
But nothing says you’re not a regulator now like seizing AIG, putting Fannie and Freddie in conservatorship, partially nationalizing the banks (even if it was in a half-assed fashion, and having $700 billion to spend.
Blago is his father in law’s creation ald Mel’s has a political machine independent of and often at odds with Daley and the GOP. But outside of Blago I don’t know who else is in that machine.
I would expect a Blago loyalist would get the nod.
Naw, after all the ’stuff’ hits the rotating device … california …
We is still here, we is still got all our problems (sceptin’, mebbe, one …) AND “we screwed”.
Now, that’s the good news.
The bad news don’t look so good.
Re Obama’s Senate seat, the one guy it is almost certainly not going to be is the Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn because he and Blagojevich seriously dislike each other.
let’s start with the good news. after all it’s only UP from here. this country needs hep. what to do?
There are no Blago loyalists. At least I’ve never heard of one. Well, maybe his wife, maybe.
Dugg and signed the petition
Thanks. Dugg
big problems don’t usually get smaller by ignoring them
exactly. that’s why it struck me as so absurd. P&B (paulson and bernanke) are probably the two (or at least two of the) most powerful people in the world. but poor paulson can’t do anything about getting the banks to lend.
only if you are a thug. then market forces fix everything. i really would like to see an agenda from bama much like the thugs had under knut.
i shouldn’t have said anything?
I predict that we is gonna havr to figure that “what to do” out and then insist that the Political Class do it.
Or else.
And, like I said way earlier today, we have got to be non-violent but very ‘effective’ in our insisting on real, substantive ‘change’.
It wouldn’t hurt if politicians became laughingstocks until ‘they’ wake up and smell the roses, either.
Pollytishuns just can’t abide not being taken seriously, which is pretty oximoroonic on their parts, given these last eight years, but you know how they are?
See thats why its so hard to guess who will get the nod.
so, it’s up to us? it’s like herding cats. you got to be jokin?
Meow
LOL!
We’ll just keep it amongst ourselves.
I swear even my wingnut friends don’t know what FISA is. I bring it up, they nod, and we go back to talking about football.
bless you. got an idea for the bama agenda?
Yeah, the only guy in Illinois who could be called a close follower of Blagojevich is Patrick FItzgerald.
‘Fraid not.
I always use tuna fish.
And I’m willin’ to bet that we’ve got some excellent cat herders here.
Remember crc, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t tuna a fish.
“tune a fish” …
qwerty is not muh fren …
Joe the Plumber’s orbit-you-Ari:
i’ll call your bet. let’s see.
sorry OT
The first thing President-elect Barack Obama should do to get the economy back on track is publicize the financial record of the Bush Administration. Every business knows that “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.”
Auditing the books is standard practice because CEOs want know where they stand financially. And no one wants to be blamed for the mistakes of prior management. If the public learns about President Bush’s mismanagement after he is safely back in Crawford, Texas, the bad news could cripple the Obama Administration. People blame the messenger.
Fortunately, such an audit will be released on December 15th. It is the Financial Report of the U.S. Government, issued by the U.S. Treasury and signed by Secretary Henry Paulson. It is the only official government document that uses audited, accrual accounting to describe America’s financial position.
It is also one of Washington’s best-kept secrets. Neither Bush nor Paulson has mentioned it publicly because it reveals national deficits and debts that are much larger than the public has been told. The media have unwittingly participated in the cover-up.
Last year’s Report said that the true national debt or “fiscal gap” was not $4 trillion, or even $9 trillion, but $53 trillion. Understanding the difference between these numbers is vital.
the rest

I think Norske said it best in the last thread.
We need much more…and we need to be VERY demanding and very loud about it.
The economy will (is in the) tank, military madness and spending continues and the criminals are both still in charge and escaping accountability.
It’s just a matter of when we will rise up, not if.
KO says a possible Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. I like!
when do you run for congress? i’ll help you.
You going to cut military programs? You got to REALLY CUT THEM, then
Spencer’s up
wouldn’t that be interesting. i don’t put it past him.
Did ah heah sumbody waz lukin’ fer cat herders?
Senator Springs, I like the sound of that
Off topic:
KO is reporting that Hillary Clinton is being considered for Obama’s Secretary of State position!
When public campaign finance would actually allow folks like you and me to govern… not raise funds and cater to the rich.
Ooops. Loo Hoo already said this!
LOL Guaranteed Eureka moments, every day!
Well, if ‘it’ ain’t up to us, then who do you figure is gonna do ‘it’?
I don’t see as we’ve any options, and didn’t Obama make use of Grace Lee’s, phrase, “We’re the people we’ve been waiting for.”?
As to herdin’ cats; you obviously haven’t met Southern Dragon yet …
or Norske … or Jane … or Christy
(I’m smilin’ when I say that, crc, ;~D)
Awesome suggestion.
Forwarded to all my Illinois friends and contacts.
That said, I don’t think Rahm gets along with her all that well.
(wonder why)
If this happens, I’m sure most here will give Obama some props for his shrewd move to get a true Liberal in his place, and all without getting his hands “dirty” with Liberal taint. Limpbaugh and Pox Newz wouldn’t know what hit ‘em.
http://narcosphere.narconews.c…..y-illinois
It’s up to you Blago!
I’m all for Schakowsky, but it looks like Duckworth will be his choice. The problem with politicians is you can’t ever get what you want. They don’t listen to them that brung em. But I never thought Obama was the liberal I wanted him to be.
And Clinton for Secretary of State? There are better candidates and she can do far more in the Senate. What’s he gonna do–take half the senate to pay his political debts? Never mind Lieberman–we won’t have 50 at the rate he’s going. And of course, Reid couldn’t herd 2 cats to dinner let alone stop a stupid filibuster on children’s health insurance, even if there were 60 Democrats. Sorry, but so much for hope. Fight on, folks.
Dan Seals
Dug and signed.
There’s hope shining down on us! And “it’s been a long cold lonely winter…”

Emanuel, Lieberman, Duckworth – where the hell did the honeymoon go? I have a feeling that my pocket’s been picked. Please don’t give me that “it’s too early” bit. The livestock is splitting from the barn at an alarming rate, probably looking for change they can believe in.
