The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of New York
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224

Dear Governor Paterson;

Please appoint Governor Elliot Spitzer, New York’s 54th Governor, senator from the State of New York State as the replacement for Sen. Hillary Clinton. While Governor Elliot Spitzer’s behavior in office was on one occasion, unseemly, his transgression was of a personal nature and not a violation of the public trust. Governor Spitzer’s personal behavior was hypocritical in that he did not live up to standards he set for other people in public life. I make no excuse for the former Governor. I would only assess his ability to serve without future issues in this area.

Governor Spitzer’s transgression, which was made public by political enemies, was framed as a criminal violation. The alleged criminal violation was the cause for his resignation. However, claims of a criminal violation were without merit according to United States Attorney Southern District of New York, the authority that is charged with deciding.

(There really ought to be an investigation of how New York Voters were deprived of their duly elected Governor in a scandal that was not criminal while it was portrayed as such, including how the Governor’s political enemies came by this information – by FBI wire transfer surveillance or telephone wiretapping. The question is of some importance in getting to the bottom of a the issue and determining whether a conspiracy existed to improperly deprived voters of their elected leader.)

Claims of Spitzer’s alleged criminal behavior were without merit but those claims deprived him of the Governor’s office. More importantly, those claims deprived the people of New York of his duly elected governorship.

You have a rare opportunity to right a wrong and give New York the kind of progressive leadership it needs in the Senate. You can do this, if you can get to the bottom of the effort to destroy Spitzer. Investigating how this happened is not a political decision it is a constitutional obligation. Who you decide to appoint, is entirely your prerogative.

All the best,

Sincerely,
Neil
