Sarah Palin will spend part of Sunday and most or all of Monday, campaigning for Senator Saxby Chambliss, in his bid to keep his seat from the strong challenge of Jim Martin. This move on the part of the Saxbee campaign is being widely perceived as one to use her ability as a "closer," that is – somebody who can cinch a deal.
Certainly, Palin has proven she can make her base base salivate. And many appearances by her in the Southeast United States during September and October drew huge, enraptured throngs. I’m sure Saxby’s campaign will love throwing scraps of red meat out to the crowds greeting Palin. But her rabid stump style might just as well drive undecided voters toward Martin. No doubt, the group plowing a lot of money into Georgia right now, the National Republican Trust PAC, has sent her the talking points she will use Sunday and Monday:
Barack Obama is just one seat away from TOTAL CONTROL
Obama will enact crushing new taxes to pay for immediate citizenship for 15 million illegal aliens
Obama is getting ready to enact a RADICAL AGENDA
Her NRT PAC and Our Country Deserves Better PAC handlers have already emailed or faxed the talking points to her. Her Sunday and Monday appearances will combine elements from their material with the disgustingly false strain exhibited in the NRSC ads that began airing Tuesday in Georgia.
Although we can only hope for another Palin moment (see definition #15), or even the long-hoped-for "Macaca" moment (it’s coming sometime, trust me), Mooselini’s Georgia appearance isn’t merely a gamble. It may well also be a way to insert "the Palin Effect."
The anomalies of Alaska voter turnout on November 4th, 2008 haven’t been adequately explained yet. National electronic vote manipulation experts are still poring through the remaining – and continuing – strangenesses. Essentially, Alaska voters reacted far differently in the booth on election day than pollsters had predicted, particularly in two statewide races.
Anchorage mayor Mark Begich was supposed to handily beat Senator Ted Stevens, who had been convicted of seven Federal felonies only days before. Begich narrowly squeaked by. Former Alaska Legislative House minority leader Ethan Berkowitz had been predicted to either soundly best or even trounce Rep. Don Young, who spent well over a million dollars on criminal legal fees his past year, and – by his own admission – is under multiple Federal investigations. Instead, Ethan Berkowitz was soundly trounced by Young.
The most often-used explanation in Alaska to these developments was that Palin turned out to be far more of an attraction for voters, than people expected. The most recent explanation has been that only polls conducted before early voting began here can be considered valid. Whatever the reasons for these disparities, the two weeks after the election were very uncertain, as thousands of votes seemed to keep popping up in various categories. A few races are still in doubt. I’ll call the mainstream narrative on how and why this occurred "The Palin Effect."
Even if Sarah screws up in Georgia – she’ll probably be too tightly controlled for that to happen – if the vote there between Chambliss and Martin is quite close, or if it tends away from pollter’s predictions in favor of Chambliss, watch for pundits and GOP apparatchiks to gather around the "Palin Effect" meme.
Not only will Georgia voters decide this important race Tuesday, but that day will also see President-elect Barack Obama meeting in Philadelphia with most US governors, at their annual U.S. Governors Association conference. In Anchorage yesterday, Palin’s spokeseunuch, Bill McAllister attempted to pimp the possibility Obama might meet in with Palin. If Palin campaigns as negatively as I predict she will in Georgia on Sunday and Monday, it will be one of Obama’s most generous gestures yet to the opposition.
We’ll see.
Meanwhile, in some pre-Thanksgiving snark toward my turkey of a governor, I posted a thread early Wednesday afternoon at DailyKos, that asked, "If Obama offers Palin a job in his administration, what should it be?" I’m paraphrasing myself, but the thread turned into an interesting, sometimes hilarious read.

Well, she did so well for McCain.
(Did I say that out loud?)
Sarah will be able to deliver the “code” adorably.
And she speaks in tongues, so they get a freebie.
Recommended and Dugg!
Was Sarah Palin’s infamous “Turkey” TV interview intentionally designed to send a message to Georgia rednecks that she is a real, red-blooded woman, and thus her endorsement of Chambliss means he is a real, red-blooded man?
“the talking points she will use Sunday and Monday”
don’t forget “Obama pals around with terrorists like Bill Ayers, and I bet Jim Martin does, too!”
“If Obama offers Palin a job in his administration, what should it be?”
Sarah would make a fine White House chef. She could personally kill the food!

To answer your question, “Why is Saxby Chambliss Gambling Everything on a Sarah Palin ‘Closer”?”
uh, maybe cuz that’s all he’s got?
I hope she gets to spend some time brushing up on Bible verses and the Commandments with GA Rep Lynn Westmoreland.
recommended and dugg et – thank you for keeping us informed
if chambliss wins it will be in spinte of palin certainly not because of her
now, if he does win, the republicans are stupid enough to give sarah credit and say she is the only reason he won
if he loses they will not find it in themselves to blame her for the loss
here is the bottom line;
the people who will vote because of palin are going to vote without her
the people who are in the middle, who question if they voted the right way before will definately vote against chambliss because of palin
she presents a no win scenario
perris – that’s the logical take, for sure.
Bwahahaha … one of the funniest moments on TeeVee …
Happy Thanksgiving Everybody !
glad this one made it to the front page, ET
Wonder how many new outfits they have to buy her. Hopefully, Todd and the kids will tag along… more per diem (ka-ching ka-ching).
Happy Thanksgiving Everybody !
I Dugg your Digg Neuro!!
Just quick drive by Pups… enjoy turkey day all.
How about chief toilet bowl cleaner because she is full of Republican bull….?
That amnesty thing might be a problem; Alaska is a sanctuary state with the usual problems for the ‘illegals’ and the ‘benefits’ for those who hire them.
If you have some time on your hands, here’s a cool Civics Quiz…
I only missed 4 out of the 33 q’s… I dispute several of them for their obvious bias towards Milton Friedman’s economic policy…! (A clue…)
It’s amazing how many of our elected officials bombed it, and on the Electoral College, too boot…!
I got 3 wrong and they were all in that category towards the end of the quiz.
Seems to me that he is hoping that Sarah (Im)Palin will bring out the mouth breathing, no-neck, redneck racists and Xtianists in force to defeat that despicable atheistic immoral ally of our new Islamofascist commie pinko Hip Hop boogaloo overlord.
I missed five when I took it and for the same reason. As if being conversant with Milton Friedmanomics equates with being knowledgeable about the US and it’s history.
I missed the Lincoln-Douglas, whereby, I thought it was the morality versus the expansion… If I’d looked at the date I’d have remembered that is was before the Act of 1850…!
Maybe what we need to do is amend the HAVA if not completely scrap it.
In those elections where a run-off occurs such as this one and which used electronic machines the first time around it should be a regulation that in FEDERAL elections (thereby leaving out the state and local states’ rights loonies) the recount must take place on paper ballots with a paper trail.
The first time that happened the electronic shenanigans would stop because the disparities would be visible for all to see and would be unexplainable.
BUT wouldn’t that mean that Palin is gonna be pallin’ around with a guy who has a RADICAL AGENDA?
And you gotta expect that Palin will be bringing a shopping list of items that Alaska wants in any sort of Federal assistance to states. After all, that IS Obama’s reason for bringing the Governors together….to find out ways the Federal Government can assist them in a time when there are facing massive deficits and are on the verge of going bankrupt.
Can we expect Palin to take a “social Darwinist” conservative Republican stance that the State Governments should be smothered in the cradle? Or is it the bathtub? Maybe she will take on her fellow Republican governors and call them RINO’s! Scream about their RADICAL agenda…and insist that they not accept bridges that actually go somewhere?
I doubt it. She’s a pandering demagogue hypocrite.
OOOhhhh civics test?
I missed the question about the Puritans although how I got the one about Socrates and Plato correct is beyond me. Graduate degree in political economics from the New School.
Just checked my email & discovered this post got front paged. So, I’m hanging out here for awhile, if anyone has a question on Palin, or on Alaskans for Truth, which is a project I’m deeply involved with.
Kathleen Parker opens her big trap about the results…
I agree with the scorn she heaps on our politicos, but, that’s about all…
I’m going to switch to another computer, as when I found out this post was front-paged, I was beginning to download some new iPhone and iTunes software. be a few minutes…..
So Phil, is the turkey killer now the “Joe the Plumber” of Alaska? When will he get a book deal?
I got one wrong…#33. I assumed from the phrasing of many that they were using standard economic analysis. But actually one of the answers is based upon Keynsian Economics (the one on the serious recession).
I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu and a Happy Turkey Day! My ride to head up the Mountain is due to arrive shortly! I’ll see ya’ll sometime tomorrow…!
Aloha Oe!!!
There are growing questions as to whether Palin and the Chambliss campaign are violating federal elections laws.
First, her trip to campaign in Georgia was announced. Then, when the NGA meeting was announced, her press office said she would be in Philadelphia Monday and Tuesday, and that the State Of Alaska was paying for her trip, except for a “side trip” to Georgia.
The bulk of her trip- time and purpose- is to campaign for Chambliss. The trip to the NGA meeting- only a few hours in duration versus a day and a half campaigning- was secondary to the original purpose.
My reading of federal election reporting requirements is that the Chambliss campaign is violating the law by pretending- with the great “reformer” Palin- that most of her trip is state business- when it is clearly to engage in partisan politics in another state.
This should not be underwriteen by the people of Alaska.
Sarah seems to attract blue-collar guys with even less situational awareness than she has, like a sick moose attracts blue flies. I’m a bit sympathetic toward the guy, though.
Who’s gonna read these peoples’ books, anyway?
BTW, I’ll be hosting FDL Book Salon on December 14th, for Riki Ott’s wonderful new book, Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. about Cordova, Prince William Sound, and the continuing
legacytragedy of the Exxon Valdez. You’re probably right. I imagine that as both Palin’s governor’s office staff and the Chambliss campaign’s people sort it out, they’ll feel the heat of scrutiny. It’s one thing to pull that kind of shit when there are several hundred campaigns going on around the country, including an epochal presidential race. It’s quite another, when yours is the only election happening that day in the USA.
Must be people haven’t taken notice of the “Palin” effect on the web… Palin groups are springing up all over, one of the forums is the fastest growing forum on the web. Ever. She was at a rally in a small town nearby. 6,000 attendees. Biden went there, too. 800 attendees. Go figure. It makes sense to me!
No doubt a lot of the people who go to see and listen to Palin are decent people, inspired by the myth and hype. But quite a few are brought out by her divisiveness, and by her coded subtext, targeted toward millenialists and dispensationalists.
After working a lot with David Neiwert and Max Blumenthal on Palin research back in September and October, I hear different messages in her speeches than do most.
Sarah will certainly inspire the Crowd with her vision, intellect and sincerity. But I think it will be hard to stop Chambliss from going over the cliff at this late stage of the race. Sarah is good but she’s not a magician.
I’m glad they’ve called her in and you will never know until the deal is done if the miracle happened.
GO SARAH We are there for you! We are the Quiet Majority.
I missed two.
Shorter Saxby Chambliss: “Vote for me and ya’ll get a
stripperbabe in every bedroom.”Obamabots and Bung-eyed lefties are already salivating over another oppurtunity to bash the mightily gorgeous and popular Mrs Palin. They will be hanging on every word, recording her events and pad in hand scribbling down all the little bits that could be fashioned into a smear. It’s the Liberals hottest game in Town and it’s called “Smash —”, and there’s even a prize. Recent reports that the prize is 2 weeks holiday in Obama’s favourite country have been hotly denied by the ambassador, but O-bloggers keen to worship at the birthplace of their messiah are having none of it.
Get your mask on and watch for a nasty outbreak of Obum-maria all over the internet.
It’s hard to deny that Palin didn’t bring it on all by herself.
Chambliss has been running dispicable ads against Jim Martin that are replete with lies in Georgia. The ads have claimed that Martin voted to protect drunk drivers, and child molesters, and several unfounded claims that Martin intends “to drastically raise taxes.”
In Georgia the hurdle is to get out the vote. Many Obama supporters who aren’t plugged into politics (and that was the vast majority of them who voted for him in Georgia) are not aware of the election now going on in Georgia. We have been working as hard as we did to get Obama elected canvassing, phoning, and informing people in the street to get the vote out.
White bigotry and ignorance are pandemic in many of the Southern states, and particularly in the rural areas parts of the state that aren’t parts of Fulton and Dekalb County in Georgia.
This is an example of a current ad running most frequently on Georgia TV:
Chambliss Sleasy Ads Full of False Claims
What is this tripe? If you’re part of some ‘quiet majority’, then you’re talking too much. And besides, you shouldn’t start out by trying to label someone, only to misspell it. It’s “bug-eyed …”. And, it’s not even the appropriate name for the ‘foul-mouthed fembloggers’ who ‘inhabit’ this blog.
Then, on top of that stupidity you claim we’re looking for an “oppurtunity” to bash Ms. Palin. Alright, you can’t read minds. I know you may believe it, but it’s just not true. Second, it’s “oppOrtunity” and it’s “Governor Palin”. Geez, can’t we get a smarter bunch of morons on the Republican side?
I guess an audio recorder just never entered your pea-pickin’ brain. Sigh.
Fact is, we don’t have to ‘fashion’ anything into a smear. We just quote her accurately and it leaves everybody laughing in the aisles.
Funny, I’ve never heard of “Smash -”. It must not be talked about much. Or, more likely you’re makin’ up crap like Republicans have been doing for decades. What is it with Republicans and the Truth. Why CAN’T Republicans handle the Truth?
‘favorite’ is the American English spelling
What are you saying, that the ambassador denies there is such a prize or that someone winning the prize would get to go there? Why are so many Republicans who insist on writing on the blogs incapable of spelling properly or writing sentences that have facts or truths or any real logic in them?
‘Obum-maria’? Get a life.
