This aired on Bill Moyers’ Journal last month. The organization, Playing for Change, is dedicated to promoting peace around the world through music and art. A little healing for us all….
Ben King’s lyrics:
When the night has come And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid, no I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah
Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me
Darlin’, darlin’, stand by me-e, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Beautiful people expressing beautiful words.
Well, I was singing along with “I won’t shed a tear,” but I was in tears as I did that. Just beautiful — thanks very much.
making a joyful noise!
thanks Laura Doty
Thanks Laura for the great music and sentiments in these troubling times.
This is one of the songs we used for our Russian work, to keep the inspiration going. Thanks Laura.
Oh, this is very nice. Reminds me that humans are capable of such good. Thank you. Going to go share this with my son now.
Hey Laura Doty, are you related to Sebastopol’s Mark and Jane Doty? Just asking.
No, although I’ve been asked that for years. Is Mark the fellow who paints Victorians so wonderfully? (I used to hear about that Mark Doty a lot.) There are many Dotys in Sonoma County but I’m not originally from this area. I’ve always wondered if their family immigration story is the same as mine….
Yep, Mark’s a painter and I used to work with Jane at the Sebastopol Safeway. I’m a Santa Rosan, but have lived in Sacramento since ‘93 when I moved here for school, but stayed for love, marriage, law school and the groovy mid-town scene. I so miss SR, but the traffic and the “fishbowl” not so much. Sacramento is everything I loved about San Francisco, but with more trees and affordable living.
Once I began seeing your Prop 8 posts and such, I look for your postings at the lake.
All the best to you even if your not kin to Jane and Mark.
Wow Laura they put your diary up on the f5ront page!!! I do love the music you posted it is full of hope and love for humanity!

Standing by you, sister. And, visualizing. Shrinking, shrinking. I think of you and do that at the oddest times during the day. When there’s a beautiful sunset, or the other day, I was driving down the hill and saw a rooster strutting along. And, I think of you.
laura, thank you so much for sharing this! I admire all you do to promote peace in the world.
