Many of you have heard about the Iowa Hawkeye fans who — though attached to other persons — decided to get it on in a restroom at the Metrodome last week as their team pounded their hosts the Gophers, 55-0. They were nabbed by the cops.
The man involved, a twentysomething, went back home to his girlfriend, and nothing further seems to have happened to him.
The woman involved? Her crime was not just to be fooling around while married, but also to be a cougar, apparently — she was 38 to his 26. And for that, she has been punished by the loss of her job and career, with her marriage no doubt soon to follow. All because she and some other Hawkeye fan had apparently decided, in a moment of drunken silliness, to act out a Penthouse Forum letter.
And in case you think that I’m only imagining a double standard here, look at the difference in how the two parties to the sex act are viewed on various sports blogs. The guy gets the virtual pats on the back for scoring, the woman loses her job AND has the Scarlet Letter virtually stitched onto her naked chest:
So while I see Feldman trying to mitigate her punishment in a legal proceeding, how do you think these further revelations make her *husband* feel?
Meanwhile, we haven’t yet heard from our hero, Ross Walsh. He’s probably too busy wading through the high-five processional outside his house.

OMG this is by far the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life. What a classy lady. Well, if I were her children I would start questioning proof of my biological father. God knows who that is? Walsh deserves a naked statue of himself constructed just outside the bathroom, so men there could walk by and think, "When will I hit the lottery."
I’m waiting for these guys to all be just as mockingly critical of Walsh (who has a girlfriend, just as she has a husband) as they are of Feldstein. Somehow I doubt very much he’ll be punished at all, much less with having his job taken away.
And as for their alleged concern over the husband and her family: It’s hard to tell from this distance, but somehow I think what’s concerning him now more than anything is that the jerks running the assisted-living center dumped his wife, so now they’re down one income at their household.

I don’t know how impaired the guy was, but if the woman was as drunk as she is reported to have been, I have to wonder about the possibility of sexual assault. She says she doesn’t remember what happened.
Maybe this unfortunate encounter was a mutually impulsive folly. Or, maybe the two actually knew each other before the incident. But if the events unfolded more or less as the woman describes them, I have to wonder.
How many married, wasted, 38-year-old women attending sporting events with their husbands go off to use the ladies’ room and somehow end up in the men’s room with a total stranger of their own free will?
She didn’t deserve to lose her job, of course, regardless of how she found herself in that situation.

Won’t it be a wonderful world when a douchebag like this gets razzed by his buddies for getting a b.j. from a cougar while the lady gets props from her friends for the conquest? Think about it — it could happen.
She should totally sue her ex-employer, though. Who has morals clauses in their employment contracts anymore?
University faculty.
Physicians and nurses.
Probably others, too.
I’ve seen women in the men’s room before, especially in older venues. It’s not uncommon to have long lines out the ladies’ facilities and no lines around the men’s. Some, well, uninhibited ladies feel free to cruise in and use the unused stalls. I’m not over fond of it myself, but I understand the impulse.
As far as losing her job, that seems a little excessive to me too. But these are the joys of being an at-will employee.
This bothered me, too. It occurred to me that she may have been slipped something.
Thanks for this post PW. There was and always has been a double standard as far as women and girls – particularly around the issue of sex. It starts with all the holier-than-thou preaching about teens getting pregnant. It includes lesbians, prostitutes, and people like this woman.
Pregnant teens: 85% of pregnant teens don’t get pregnant by their teenage boyfriends. They get pregnant by men who are old enough to be charged with child molestation or statutory rape. As soon as the girl gets pregnant, they dump her and move on. These statistics hold up over time, and apply no matter what demographic or geographic area of the country. Most of the time, even if the kid is under 14, no prosecution occurs because ’she consented’. However, she is also vilified if she wants an abortion. If she drops out of school and has the baby – she is doomed to a lifetime of poverty (the baby too) and then she is vilified for that as well.
Lesbians: It is interesting how all the homophobes (men) are all so freaked out by the idea of gay men. But they are all really interested in the idea of watching two women have sex. That is the stuff of jokes with buddies and fervent wishes for that to happen in their fantasies. Ewww!
Prostitutes of both sexes exists. And the patrons of the female ones are men of course. But prostitutes are arrested for providing a service for which they get paid. The johns are not. AND the male ones who service females? Well, it is more of this high-five stuff and their male friends all wish to trade places with them. When is the last time you ever heard of a male prostitute getting arrested? (And I am not talking about gay boys either – they get arrested as well)
So then you add it the insurance pays for ED drugs – but not RU486. If some form of contraception fails – it is always the woman’s fault. And her burden if a pregnancy occurs. Over $6.7 million of those ‘rebate checks’ were scooped up by various district attorneys to pay back child support that was owed by deadbeat dads.
Yep. It sure would be nice if the women got the high fives and the men lost their jobs and got treated like scum. Just for one day even.
Do you have a link or somewhere I can see that statistic you quote? I ask because it does not jibe with the experience that my home town had. When I entered 9th grade, we had a 21% teen pregnancy rate in my home town. Mom was a county commissioner and one of the things she did was to establish two health centers where they kept a bowl of condoms on the front desk. It was not in direct sight of the receptionist, so kids could come in, get condoms and no one would be the wiser. By the second year, the pregnancy rate had fallen 4%. Not all of this decline could be attributed to the health centers, but every kid in my class knew that you could get condoms there.
Certainly any job with a security clearance. Most employers I have worked for have had some phraseology regarding “Mutual convenience”, which I took to mean they could shitcan you for anything they wanted to and you could leave at any capricious reason that happened to occur to you. Is that incorrect? I know that I’ve worked for Companies that would settle lawsuits which they certainly would have won, simply to avoid the adverse publicity that would result from litigation.
When I was new there, I was amazed the first time they settled when they were certain to prevail. That was when I was still conscious of saying “We” instead of “They”.
That’s called an “at-will” contract. You’ve got a job as long as they want you and you want them.
Not much security in those contracts.
There are Pyrrhic victories. You win, but you lose so much in winning that you might as well have lost. Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy goodwill than air your dirty laundry.
