Natasha did some interesting Senate analysis here. I decided to go one step further and removed Senators elected in 2004 from the equation. The logic is simple: In 2004 George Bush’s coat tails were helpful, Katrina did not occur until one year later, and the total repudiation of the conservative governing philosophy was years away — electorally this country was a different place. 

By this logic the population of  states that elected a Democrat to the Senate since 2006 total 223,265,500 Americans, while Republican states comprise 91,084,846 Americans.
