In keeping with his final Farewell, I Screwed You All Tour, our President has, according this Times article, directed his henchmen to leave President-Elect Obama a set of crisis warning briefings about potential trouble spots around the world. The Times interviews sympathetic experts who proclaim what a thoughtful gesture this is.
On which planet? The only useful warnings Bush could leave Obama are ones he can read on the front pages of the nation’s/world’s newspapers:
Allow me to write the Executive Summary of the new Bush Report, Watch out for the Shoes!:
“Dick and I, and our two ‘national security’ teams [ha, ha, ha, ha] have made the world more dangerous; we’ve angered just about everyone, and it will take you years to turn that around, if ever. Ha, ha, ha, ha ha, [smirk, smirk].”
Other highlights:
– After turning Afghanistan over to a corrupt regime, we’re desperately trying to save it from being overrun by a totally resurgent Taliban. The Afghanis hate us for bombing them.
– We supported a dictator over democracy in Pakistan and left that nuclear region a dangerous mess; they hate us.
– We’ve destroyed much of Iraq, killed hundreds of thousands, turned millions into refugees; most Iraqis want to throw shoes at us.
– We caused chaos and civil war in Somalia, imposing murderous war lords and an invading army who raped and killed people. They all hate us.
– We’ve supported repressive policies in the Middle East; the Lebanese hate us; the Palestinians hate us, the Syrians hate us.
– We’ve angered most of the civilized world by kidnapping people, rendering them to countries to be tortured, tortured them ourselves and held innocent people indefinitely without accountability. The world hates us for this.
– We’ve succeeded in convincing the Iranians that building a nuclear deterrent is perfectly rational.
– We blundered in Georgia, which has been humiliated by an angry Russia.
But not to worry, we’ve exhausted our armed forces, depleted our National Guard, overused our reserves, and blown through a $1-3 trillion, while maiming 10-30,000 soldiers and killing over 4200, all to make sure much of the world hates us.
We’ve wrecked the economy, allowed the banking system to self destruct, destroyed jobs, weakened health care and retirements, and we’re about to allow our domestic manufacturing base to collapse after squashing the workers who built our middle class.
We’ve left the entire nation more vulnerable to oil dependence.
And we’ve done everything we can to delay, obstruct and make more difficult the effort to save the planet from global climate change. Present and future generations will hate us for this.
Here’s an alternative plan, Mr. President Elect: Arrest these thugs. Clean out the Justice Department these thugs have so disgraced and compromised. Then instead of shoes, throw the book at them, starting with the Constitution, War Crimes Statutes and the Geneva Conventions, and the entire set of the US Criminal Code. WaPo’s Ann Telnaes has the idea. (h/t Elliot)
Update: NYT Editorial discusses the Senate Armed Services Committee Report on the DoD’s authorization of torture, calls for appointment of prosecutor. Glenn Greenwald has more.

Hello, Scarecrow.
Right on Scarecrow! don’t throw the shoe, throw the book at them.
If we don’t, I really do fear for the Republic,
Throw the book at them and prosecute them by the book. There are many crimes and they must answer for each one of them.
Thanks, Scarecrow.
Thanks Scarecrow!

Good morning, kathryn, all. First real snow today for us.
Not just arrest, successfully prosecute all of them and throw away the keys.
Thanks as always for saying it right and with integrity,
Blessings to all,
I guess some PEOPLE forgot that the world was such as dangerous when Bill was in charge. How strange that everyone is so fast in knocking down a man who tried to stop madness from arriving at our shores. They probably forgot what we did to Germany, or Japan for the sake of the freedoms that they are cherishing today. What if Japan succeeded? What if the madman from Germany conquered the world? Would these liberal bleeding hearts still think the way they are thinking? The innocent muslims, the liberals scream with their fist up in the air to stop the conservative madness against them, yes, the same people who are told by Allah that Christians and Jews must die in order for them to see their G-d. One would think that the person writing this article is from the middleeast from the way they are so determined to make the USA the beast. If democracy is a shortcut for demons and the Prince of Air-waves is in charge, as most of country believe we are as of today, then let us change our country to One rule and no freedoms. Would that help the writer love our country more? Democracy is the place of evildoers, and some of us that have been elected- will fight to change it, but, we first must make it safe for all mankind, not just for homosexuals liberals. I can guarantee that most of the bleeding liberals have never picked up a gun or served in our forces, they want their freedoms and their america bashings, and also be lovers of themselves, but, won’t stand by “glory- our flag”. Without works, there is no faith.
Clue. Go ahead, take it. You don’t seem to have one.
You are mistaken about a great many things, including my tour with the 1st Cav in Vietnam. You haven’t a clue about what patriotism means. But since facts have not invaded your thinking, I suppose that does not matter.
I only have two comments about your statement:
1) Why do you spell God “G-d”? Is there some law somewhere that says you can’t say or write it out loud? Makes me question where your head is at (if nothing else).
2) It is quite obvious to me that you personally have never come face to face with real military combat. If you had, it would become immediately obvious what “Liberalism” is all about – in a heartbeat. And believe it or not, I hope for your sake you never have to. Pissing one’s pants is never a good response to anything.
Soldierofchrist – this hippy war-protesting daughter of a West Point grad and Korea casualty has shot handguns and rifles. So have my mother and aunt – both nurses in the army, including Viet Nam.
Now answer me why Republicans always get things backwards – you say sarcastically that we will change things to a Unitary president and take away rights (habeas corpus? right to assemble?) – yet you don’t realize Bush has done these things. Go online and read the laws being passed. Do your homework.
Ann Telnaes illustrates for you
Stop feeding the trolls.
Today on Faux Snooze:
Interviewing White House flack on the subject of Bush’s ‘worst-case-scenario’ plans for the Obama team:
Well, how did the Obama team respond to your planning?
They were very professional and seemed to be happy to have this guidance.
I’m sure that our listeners will be happy to hear this since we have been worried that the first thing they would do once they got into office was to begin trying to destroy everything this President accomplished in office. It’s interesting that when Bush came into office this kind of pre-planning was not provided. And 9/11 happened very early in his presidency. No one could have anticipated that people would fly planes into buildings blah blah blah…
WTF? I’m sorry, have you Faux Snooze reporters been under a rock for the last seven years? That little thingy called a PDB that said bin Laden determined to strike in US? The one that said they were going to use planes?
*Note: transcript is a rough (very rough) paraphrase. I was trying to keep from choking as I was sitting in the lobby of the VA hospital where this was on. (By the way – seems the TV sets in all the public areas of the hospital can only be tuned to Faux)
Just remember, some shoes have steel toes, like mine.
Yup..figures..it is a website..with that military/religion mix….blah,blah,blah

We’ve got a christer infestation….should we tent the place?
A bit OT: I just watched Chris Matthews with Jim Moran and Duncan Hunter discussing today’s NYT editorial that called for a special prosecutor to look into the findings of the Senate Armed Services Committee that Rumsfeld et al were responsible for the detainee abuses at Abu Ghraib, Guantanimo, and elsewhere.
Firs of all, Moran deflected the conversation away from “individual responsibility” to the adverse effects of torture on our national security in terms of quality of intelligence, recruitment by our opponents, and pay-back visited on our troops, all valid points but red herrings in terms of the announced topic.
Then Duncan Hunter, claimed there there was no connection between what happened at Abu Ghraib and the authorized practices at Guantanimo, deliberately ignoring the fact that Rumsfeld sent General Geof Miller, the head of Guantanimo, to Abu Ghraib to show them how to get better intelligence out of the Iraqi detainees.
It was a most disgusting circus.
Th NewsHour just had on another reasonably good discussion on an economic topic, the nomination of Schapiro to head the SEC. Schapiro has been involved in regulation for some time but mostly from a business friendly point of view.
So are you in favor of killing all moslems? I mean they all hate us an everything- so why not kill em all and turn em into biofuel? Would you agree?
Or do you think that only guilty moslems should be punished? And how would you distinguish the two, the president’s say so?
It also ignores the recently released Senate Armed Services Committee report which found directly the opposite.
President Dickhead interrupted his victory tour today to tell us that he’s thinkin about helpin the auto industry to go bankrupt…stock market tanked. He hasn’t made up his mind yet, he’s just thinkin ya know.
Dear friend,
You forgot about the real life bimbot thinking about a “structured” bankruptcy of the big 2 1/2 because—he doesn’t want to leave a mess for Obama to clean up. I almost choked when I heard that.
We are so screwed in so many ways.
Seems ta me that President GW Dickhead might be better off to tell us about the bankruptcy AFTER he decides that’s what he’s gonna do. Guess he just likes to let us know what’s goin through his little mind…..
emphasis on the word “little”
Per david Latt at HuffPo:
Of course the veep has no constitutional authority to approve ANYTHING unless the pres GIVES him that authority- so either Cheney went beyond his briefs- or Clusterfuck’s the war criminal..
We may see that “pardon yerself” thingee tested.
Excuse me? I served proudly for twenty years and I consider myself a bleeding heart liberal… Do you think we’re making it safe by using indiscriminate air strikes in Sadr City or small towns in Afghanistan…? That certainly wins the hearts and minds, dontcha think…? Oh wait, you’re not thinking…
So Hunter confronted that report head-on. He said that he has sent a letter to Levin challenging him to show any place in the court testimony in the cases against the Abu Ghraib “bad apples” that the defense attorneys were able to make the case that those techniquest had been imported from Guantanimo.
But what he failed to not is the fact that the military did not allow superior officers, intelligence officers, and/or civilian contractors to be subpoened.
I’d like to believe that the new admin. would prosecute them, but there are absolutely no signs that such a thing would happen. I see it as a double dare on the part of Darth et all. I would love to be proven wrong but I doubt that O will take that dare.
Remember when George Bush got the thoughtful warnings from the Clinton Administration that Osama bin Laden should be in their cross hairs, but all we heard out of George Bush’s mouth for 9 months before 9/11/01 was how bad Saddam Hussein was and how he tried to kill his daddy? Spit.
Headline: “Carrier to be named after Bush”
funny, when I see Bush and carrier in the same sentence, I think Typhoid Mary
Of course, George Bush will lie to the Obama Administrations about any threats around the world to divert their attention away from the fact that his neocons are conspiring today to attack our nation again.
LMAO!
Yeah, I just saw that Bush segment tonight, as though it just occurred to him that he shouldn’t leave a catastrophe for the next President. Is he smirking when he says stuff like that? Or just completely clueless?
Also, wigwam, Hugh the NYT editorial on the DoD approval of torture was pretty good; Glenn Greenwald had a good post or two on the topic yesterday/today.
I wonder why that is?
Duncan is a ratfuck. And now his son won the seat. After visiting Aunt Marion a few weeks ago, who lives in his district, I can see why.
She blamed the democrats for the financial crisis because they’ve been in power for two years. When I mentioned who was responsible for deregulation, she didn’t want to talk politics.
The archtypical case of fixing a report is that of the 9/11 Commission. Bush and company did everything they could first to spike it and then to emasculate it by limiting access and resources, cirucmscribing its mandate (so it couldn’t lay blame on anyone), and finally stacking it with partisan Republicans and tame Democrats. That the report even went as far as it did is kind of amazing, but once done it was taken as definitive even though it was a highly compromised product.
Tell me that this doesn’t stink to high heaven. The Navy waives a policy in effect since before dirt? Can you spell photo op? G H W Bush and his idiot son together at the commissioning of a carrier that nobody knows if everything works on this money pit.
ain’t is just fuckin great that Jane went on CNN and drew all these bible thumping morons over here.
But will Obama investigate torture or is he going to let bygones be bygones?
Gerry Owen crow
I wonder how Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi would feel if Obama announced that he would go after everyone who signed off on torture.
Watching John Harwood spew forth heaps of steaming bs about Obama’s “reaching out” with the Warren choice. I feel like I want to be sick.
Typical fucking officer, blame it on the troops just like they blamed the grunts at 881 for not cleaning their 16’s when they issued them that fucked up ammo.
Will. Not. Happen.
Heh. Price of fame. They won’t hang around long. We’re so unrepentant.
Jerry Falwell in a Hawiian Shirt!
Were they the prime players on that 500-something comment thread? Maybe we can convert ‘em to progressive sinners.
What would be cool would be if Lowrey bailed.
nailed it.
RevDeb, I was pushing for you to take Warren’s place last night. Why does Obama want a celebrity pastor? Why not someone like you or Peterr who is just plain genuine?
With fucked up receivers.
Oh yea, this one idiot just kept going and going while Hugh wiped the floor with him. You know. like he does with me!
LOL
For those who give a shit
I didn’t know ’til this post that scarecrow had been in 1st Cav. Damn Nam vets keep poppin’ up outta spider holes an’ shit.
we’re not politicians with constituencies he gives a damn about.
What this all says to me is that his years of being part of a UCC congregation were all a lie. The UCC is the most liberal of the Christian denominations and strongly and publicly supports the LGBT community and a woman ’s right to determine her own reproductive fate. It’s part of who they are. So the message to me is that he’s an opportunist who uses whomever and whatever he thinks will advance his career. Now that he’s reached the top wrung he can show who he really is without caring about the consequences.
YMMV of course.
Oh yea, he’s a bro.
I thought the UU folks were considered the most liberal. Just curious.
RTO is my weak ass mind remembers correctly.
if
you know I realize this is your issue but you are going to have a stroke if you don’t kick it down a little bit.
Why did John Dean just say that the torture issue has a statute of about 8 years?
We are the most liberal. We don’t, however, consider ourselves Christians though we have historical roots in Christianity. The UCC is the most liberal Christian denomination.
because he is a lawyer?
Yes, but we are family so we both give as good as we get.
White Knight 65, except when I was in the field as a 6i — long, long ago, in a galaxy . . .
If only I were so convincing and analytical.
Statute of Limitations — after a period specified by statute, the law presumes the evidence is too old, the witnesses memories too unreliable to use as the basis for criminal trial and conviction.
Unlike say AWOL Georgie Dubya Bush you mean?
Or five-deferment Richard “shotgun” Cheney?
Or the rest of the dickheads who make up the top three eschelons of this administration? To my (limited) knowledge NONE of those yahoos ever served.
Just because all us bleeding-heart liberals are not out there bragging about it doesn’t mean we haven’t done the right thing – and quite frankly – you are completely and totally wrong on this subject.
Navy Vet, 1969-1972
Thank you. I can’t keep track of all the different denominations.
Raven, respectfully, I will not have a stroke. This is the stuff I care about most and there is no way I will kick it down a notch. If people of faith—and those of us professionally in the role of religious leaders DON’T speak out about this loudly and proudly, then there is no way we can expect the people in the pews to have an effect. It is my calling to care and care deeply about the inherent dignity of all people, you included. As you said in an earlier thread, I calls them as I see them.
And on this choice of Obama, I call b*llshIt.
where do you place the friends (quakers)? the meetings i’ve been too seem much more liberal than the ucc churches i’ve been to.
I think of pigeon. Can it be far from there to “duck”?
Good because I worry about you. My only other comment would be that you seem to be way beyond “this choice of Obama” into a full fledged assault on his very being,
Air Cav?
The Friends do not as a body take positions on anything except pacifism. The UCC as a body has come out officially for choice and for gay rights, though since they have congregational polity there are congregations who do not affirm the official positions. Quakers as a whole are very liberal in terms of peace, but not necessarily on other issues though many of the people personally are. I’m now living in the heart of Quaker country. We have 3 different meetings represented at the local interfaith council.
I looked. The US Code TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 113C > § 2340A doesn’t say anything about a statute of limitations:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/usc…..A000-.html
I’m not sure who he is as a being. Been watching him for several years including volunteering briefly for him when he was running for Senate in IL. While on vacation, we went to his HQ and stuffed envelopes. So I’ve been watching him for a while wanting for him and hoping for him to take some kind of leadership role on anything liberal. I waited and watched and nothing. I lost faith. He can do all the kumbaya he wants but once in office, the rethugs will do everything in their power to thwart everything he does unless he bends to their will. So far all I’ve seen is bending. I would love to be proven wrong. Time will tell.
Yes. Radio operator, mostly battalion, but sometimes at company with CIDG (like a local village militia, with a US captain and radio operator).
In my book the M14 is the better weapon, might be heavier but so what. When the guy is behind a brick wall a few shots and there is no brick wall and no guy! Sure the M-16 created more damage to the flesh. But if there were several enemy right behind the one you were shooting with the M14 the odds were you would get several of them with the one shot. And they didn’t jam… Rifle jammed dead GI!
Uggg.

The announcement of Representative Hilda Solis as President-elect Obama’s Secretary of Labor is great news for America’s workers. Solis comes from a union family and has never forgotten her roots in her public service career. Her appointment is a win for the prospects of the Employee Free Choice Act and the economic future for the people of this country who get up and go to work every day.
Thanks. Bein’ brown water Navy I don’t know squat about Army organization. I get confused above platoon and forget about knowin’ what units are what.
I have a lot of respect for the quakers. My daughter went to a friends school in PA.
That’s what we carried in Korea, I hated it when I went to the Nam and got that tinker toy.
Thank you. That actually makes sense.
That’s interesting; you’d think Dean would be familiar with this.
Yea, the Navy and Marines are really straight forward. Course now the Army has totally screwed the pooch with these Regimental Combat Team and such!
There were times when it was more like an anatomy lesson than a blog.
What do you think about the appointment of Kirk for trade?
Clinton and Clark told Bush that O.b.Laden would be his number one issue. Bush response? Ignore it.
What did he say to his CIA briefer who presented the PDB called “O.b.Laden determined to strike in the United States” in August 2001? “You’ve covered ass.”
There is no amount of due diligent briefing memos that Bush can leave for Obama that will make up for Bush malfeasance.
also friends seem pretty liberal on gender and racial equality, the lack of a creed, non-hierarchical, … but maybe i’ve just had bad luck with conservative ucc members. thanks. limited experience here.
M-14. Longer range and a hell of a lot more accurate. SEALs loved ‘em. Biggest problem, apart from the weight of the weapon and ammo, is the damn thing is uncontrollable in full auto, even with a bipod.
I saw that Mary how freaking wasteful of good bandwidth. RicK (Warren or Sanchez) sent the denizens to the Lake to make Religious Waves. Man I believe in Separation of Church and State! Keep your fucking Religion to yourself and I will not bug you about it. Our Constitution is based on there being no place in the Law for religious Law! That way every one can practice their religion or lack of it to themselves.
Don’t know enough about him to have an opinion. The education dude seems good.
Heard that one more than once from my friends that had to serve there. They still use the M-14 when they need a wee bit more hitting power!
don’t know solis, very glad to hear it.
The best pick of all in my opinion is Chu.
It is my fond and deep hope that by signaling intention to go after bin Laden, long after the trail has gone cold, Obama is also signaling people closer to home that they might do well to watch their own backsides. Never too late?
Solis is one of the vice-chairs of the progressive caucus. The only bone fide progressive in all of the nominations IIRC.
And now some of these barbarians are talking about weapons!
Where’s my Mattel?
bless you
Gavin Newsome joining Rachel on Warren.
Oh, shit, now we’ll get the John Wayne wannabee trolls.
Where’s our Ba Hai sniper?
Got it caught in his zipper.
U.S. Army 1968-70 here, and still bleeding away.
OK gotta pack for the trip. Ya’ll have as good a holiday as you can under the circumstances. Here’s a little cheer from a pagan.
welcome home bro
Raven I had an appointment at the VA yesterday and the Foot Doctor was a Major and he said he was very pleased with the appointment of General Sheins???kie and that Marine General. He said that neither man knew Obama and that they would serve because they were asked and couldn’t say NO. He thinks both will do a great job and he is sure that the new VA head will reaaly put things back together at the VA and with the promised increase in funding the VA can do our Vets right. He wouldn’t say anything about his CinC Shrub but was counting down the days…nuff said
Nice dogs. Have a good holiday.
Have a safe trip and a great holiday, bro.
Wow. Same time.
That black pooch is priceless. Other guy makes a good ham.
And found it

Masaccio, welcome home bro.
Looseheadprop has a new post on the Mother of all Ships
democracy now! reported on duncan this morning. i have not heard good things, although it could have been worse.
kirk was mayor of dallas. considering it was dallas, he was not bad. but i wasn’t following city politics that much. don’t know if he has any experience with trade though, and kinda worry about the bentsen at treasury connection. probably could go either way, will have to wait and see or maybe someone else has more info on him?
will have to read up on solis. just started doing some reading on gensler who hugh told me will have cftc.
Thanks for tracking that down. Makes sense.
Happy Holidays Raven wishing you and yours the best(:>))
doesn’t that kind of mean that W’s and Darth’s actions, (and Rummy’s too) don’t fall under the 8 year rule since their actions caused innumerable amounts of death and torture?
Never mind.
Go to http://www.change.gov and tell Obama t.v. stations other than Fox exist and should be allowed!
