One year ago, the first ‘You Suck at Photoshop’ youtube was uploaded. Happy Anniversary!
I first heard of this hilarious instructional video series from my friend, artist/computer guru Bill-he’s the one staring at you at the top of the page.above.look up.
Click on his name then click on Gallery. Eye Candy.
What a year YSAP Donnie had, he went viral. Millions of ‘hits’. And it’s no wonder. His series of photoshop tips amidst ongoing tribulations and interruptions is one of the funniest things I’ve ever watched. From the menus, titles and photos in his ’screen folders’ to his sly witty jokes that I sometimes don’t ‘get’ until later, he is one funny nerd.
From the virgin youtube description:
Donnie Hoyle pulls a digital end-around on a restraining order and vandalizes a Vanagon.

My first exposure to Donnie was ‘Vanishing Point’, lesson #10, from Season 1. (There are two seasons). I laugh just thinking about it. He uses a train of friends to illustrate what it is. I had tears in my eyes, laughing, the poor guy. I was hooked and smitten with Donnie Love. Or Donnie Pity, don’t know which.
YSAP’s new project is called Agency of Record, a web comedy series set at an ad agency.
The host site for this hilarity and other things is MyDamnChannel. Info page for the site .
I had forgotten about the YSAP series until I found it on a list of comedy videos on a site that I like. I went back to the original youtube and it just happened to be their Anniversary!! And once again noticed things I missed the first hundred times I watched them. (i.e. how many surveillance photos he took of the Vanagon-the name is a joke, too. ROFL ‘he’s ate up’.)
When Oxdown was first mentioned, I wanted to do a series of diaries on Art-related things. Art Stuff. ‘You Suck at Pgotoshop’ deserves the maiden voyage. The ‘typo’ was on purpose, you’ll get it when you watch the videos.
"Art can’t hurt you" unless it hits you on the head or falls on your foot or causes a car crash. Or causes a slow death due to all of the chemicals you ingest and absorb doing it. But there’s always a down side. And an up side. And that part in the middle.
A little hilarity never hurt anyone.
Here’s to hilarity.
(Yes, hilarity is my word of the week.)
We might delve into the ‘outrageous’ next time. Haven’t decided, my Muse hasn’t voted yet. What=evah word of the week the Muse says, wins.

YSAP is genius – education and software training masquerading as comedy. I love it. I do think my favorite is the ‘replacing the cat with a stain’ project.
Pure. Adulterated. Genius.
eeeeeewwwwwwwwww i have comments!!!!
i love it. oxdown is a great thing.
thanks. really.
i really do love this guy. he reminds me of my friends who keep me sane by being insanely absurd. i am often misunderstood here. margot told me it’s because i see things in such depths that can’t be stated in sound bites. . probably true. my friends keep me in a state of confidence.
yes, i am lucky to know absurdly insane people.
another one of them is kramer
http//:www.astrofish.net
he disguises himself as an astrologer, but has a doctorate in shakespearean literature. he went to prep school with ross perot’s son, those insights were worth a reading.
he is an equivalent to an artist, has honed his own way, travels the country and the world and does what makes him happy. one unique individual. in the early days of aol, he was in charge of a section of their bread and butter that led them to success. it still irks me off that he never did get credit for it. he just went on his merry way from there. i hope he got paid. big. back then, aol was the only game in town. he and his friends helped build it. he’s never said a word. we’ve been email pals for over 14 years. maybe more, i don’t remember. imagine, any pups have an email pal for over 14 years that they have never met? we mail each other packages. he mails me music, cd’s of a wide variety, my favorite, i mail him toys and rare fishing lures.
but i can verify, he is absurdly insane. a subscription to his site is 2.95 a month. cheaper than if i was in texas meeting him for coffee. . you can go in there though and read all you want, for free, plus his photos on his other blog. his hobby is taking photos of incongruous signs. and he dabbles in garage band and imovies. besides being a genius, he is a good guy. i complained that i missed his essays, wonderful essays. he explained that writing the horoscopes was more writing than the essays are. he has written two books of his ’scopes as essays.
he is an unrecognized player in the early days of the internet. like jane is now. but he was bigger. they had international pegged down when noone even thought it could be done. his best friend worked for a newspaper and was in hong kong posting comments to get here. they owned the internet. were on the edge of it and owning it. using technology ahead of the pack. just like jane. he is someone who keeps me same. reminds me that i am unique.
