Via Huffington Post, here’s Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s full statement on Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s appointment of former state Attorney General Roland Burris to President-Elect Barack Obama’s United States Senate seat:
"It is truly regrettable that despite requests from all 50 Democratic Senators and public officials throughout Illinois, Gov. Blagojevich would take the imprudent step of appointing someone to the United States Senate who would serve under a shadow and be plagued by questions of impropriety. We say this without prejudice toward Roland Burris’s ability, and we respect his years of public service. But this is not about Mr. Burris; it is about the integrity of a governor accused of attempting to sell this United States Senate seat. Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus.
"Next week we will start one of the most important debates of the year – outlining an economic recovery plan to create jobs and invest in America. And in the coming weeks, we will be working to protect homeowners and consumers, make America more energy independent, strengthen our national security, and improve health care and educational opportunities. There is much work to do and a lot at stake. It is thus critical that Illinois and every other state have two seated Senators without delay."We again urge Gov. Blagojevich to not make this appointment. It is unfair to Mr. Burris, it is unfair to the people of Illinois and it will ultimately not stand. The governor must put the interests of the people of Illinois and all Americans first by stepping aside now and letting his successor appoint someone who we will seat."

Thank goodness! And even better…

The IL SoS refuses to certify this! Justice may yet prevail.
Lieberman, on the other hand, who campaigned for the Republican Party candidate, maligned fellow Democrats and PEBO, is welcome to remain in the Deocratic Caucus because he gave Reid some money and because he has seniority.
hackworth-
I’m just curious. How the heck does Loserman allow Blago to send someone to the Senate? The IL Gov. is on trial to trying to sell favors from his office, including this very Senate seat. Now yes, I still think the Senate Dems made a HUGE mistake in keeping Loserman in the Dem Caucus. However, it’s no mistake for them to show some spine now in saying no to Blago.
Harry Reid only shows spine when a fellow Democrat has transgressed him. See Dodd, Chris.
Teddy-
Unfortunately, Reid isn’t known for showing political courage. But hopefully now, he’ll do the right thing & not allow Obama’s Senate seat to be tainted by the Blago psychodrama.
Burris should not serve in the Senate.
Harry Reid should resign as Majority Leader.
Innocent until proven guilty remember. Sure, no doubt he is guilty but you can’t put the cart before the horse.
Otherwise you must condemn pelosi for not ousting jefferson and his 90 grand in cold cash.
Applauding! BTW, is this Burris related to Plaxico?
Tainted is as tainted does. Blagojevich should not have name anyone given the cloud that he is under. But he did because he wanted to make it real clear to everyone in the state that he is the governor and they can go Cheney themselves. I maintain that if his naming of Burris is added to his bill of impeachment, the nomination can be nullified.
do you think the nomination should be nullified?
Although this guy Blago has not been impeached or found guilty of any crime (except despicable behaviour), I don’t think thats a crime yet, the Demo’s in congress finally get some gonads and just say no. Of course this is to other Democrats not Republicans. As far as I can see Blago still has the right to name the senator of his choice until he is impeached or convicted of a crime, so the demos continue with their own Kabuki theater to their own detriment.
The ostensible goal should be to appoint an interim senator who will serve the interests of Illinois and the country and can win reelection. Blagojevich has done Burris no favor. Blago’s stink will not wash off easily.
