On Sunday, I posted a DailyKos diary, called IDF Gaza Offensive Thoughts – I Was Denounced as an Anti-Semite. I put it up to see if others who had undergone or were undergoing the same experience had anything to add.
Guess what? I was instantly denounced as a "raving anti-Semite."
Not many people who had undergone similar experiences to mine came forward, but many commenters accused me of anti-Semitism or of being somebody with a persecution complex. Or both.
There was no lack of supporters for my premise, though, that when one steps up to strongly defend the Palestinian people, fervent supporters of Israel often use the "a-S" tag without much thought, and with flimsy evidence, if any.
My route to such ill fame was through writing classical music about Rachel Corrie and the plight of Palestinians. Not many classical musicians write about this issue. A few have, but for every piece of classically-based music about this that might exist, there are plenty, perhaps over a thousand, about the World War II Holocaust against Europe’s Jewish population. And for every play such as "My Name is Rachel Corrie" there are dozens that play to the "equivalency" meme, which seems to require an artist addressing the plight of the Palestinians to spend equal time addressing the horrors visited upon Israelis by suicide bombers.
Comparing the weblog master sites Daily Kos and firedoglake over the past week has been quite interesting.
In the days before the Israeli bombings began, firedoglake published several diaries that foretold what was about to be visited upon Gazagrad. Although several diaries on the same subject were written by Kos diarists, none made the "Recommended Diaries" list that I can find, and none were noted in the roundups and diary rescues on the main page. Right now, looking down the main feature column at Kos, there isn’t a mention of this awful, ongoing war crime. Tripp Palin makes the list, as does his mother-in-law.
Since the bombings began, several Kos diaries on the conflict have made the "Recommended Diaries" list, though. One that is up there right now is extremely notable, and is written in such a way that it is hard for Zionist concern trolls and flamers to make any headway. The diary is called Stop Starting Arguments. Start Stopping Suffering. I recommend this diary to the maximum.
There are other tags used to stifle or attenuate debate on these issues, beside the batant "anti-Semite" tag. My favorite from the comments at the Daily Kos article I just recommended was this:
a charity name "Free Gaza" (0+ /0-)
Doesn’t sound neutral
I’ve watched firedoglake go through a vibrant growth process on issues pertaining to Palestinian rights and Israeli expansion. I’ve been proud to be a responsible part of that growth process here. I must say, though, that since working and volunteering directly for Democratic Party candidates and for the party itself in Alaska, since the fall of 2006, and at my own blog since 2007, I’ve given these issues less importance than I should have.
Was I gun shy from my experiences as having been labeled an anti-Semite? YES!!!
As I attenuated my wishes to write more about this set of issues and concentrated on other issues (there was no lack of the latter!), I felt guilty. I wanted to pursue writing, perhaps on the national level, about the depth, seriousness and legacy of the environmental damage caused by the completely unnecessary Jiyeh Power Station oil storage complex bombings, the greatest environmental catastrophe visited upon the shores of the Levant in memory. I didn’t. I was afraid, as I worked on Diane Benson’s 2006 campaign against Don Young, for Alaska’s sole US House seat, that if I wrote about the spill, it would be used in the Alaska press to diminish Benson’s campaign.
As I’m witnessing this devastation continue in Gaza and the West Bank, even though I’ve spoken out against Zionist aggression, I can’t help but feel that had I done more, been more effective, I could have helped.
It’s about time I had the courage to write about this here at Oxdown Gazette. I hope I can drum up the courage to write about it more directly in Alaska. It has been almost five years since I did.
What are some other tags used against defenders of Palestinian rights?

Thank you for this eloquent diary, ET.
Thanks, Laura. I hope to write more on this.
Yes. I believe I can hear the drums of your courage from my house. I expect others of us will also catch the beat.
I think that’s Eric, the drummer from my son’s band that disbanded when ET Jr. went away to school in California. They’re getting back together though, this month.
Their name – Intafada.
Well said. I find the Anti-Semitic tagging analogous to racist tagging. The actor is immune from all behavioral criticism because a group he/she/they belong to presently was treated abominably at some time in the past.
Hey when someone doesn’t have an argument, calling names is a way of closing down discussion without the need for coming up with one.
Readers – please do go to the Daily Kos diary I highlighted in my essay:
Stop Starting Arguments. Start Stopping Suffering.
It has many useful links to helpful institutions, organizations and information.
Thank you, ET
Dugg right here
thanks ET, i’ve recommended the dkos diary.
don’t remember ever being called an anti-semite, but i’ve been called a terrorist by people in my community and a potential threat to society by the chief of police for standing at a silent peace vigil in response to a march in support of israel’s actions in the battle in jenin in 2002. it went downhill from there for a while but i think it’s getting better now.
Over the years I have become more painfully conscious of the horrors being visited on the Palestinian people (I spent a life-changing 36 hours in the West Bank in 1992). When I have expressed the view that what is being done to the Palestinians should not happened to anyone, anywhere, I have been hit with the anti-Semite label. I’ve also done my own soul searching. Hatred of Jews is, after all, a core Western pathology, part of the culture heritage like racism. And like racism, is tends to be the default condition, something that is picked up unconsciously and needs to brought to consciousness and counteracted there. So my personal strategy has been to couple speaking up for Palestinian rights (mostly in personal interactions, but those can be the riskiest) with zero-tolerance for anti-Jewish rhetoric. So if someone with whom I happen to agree with on the Palestinian issue goes of on “Jews this” and “Jews that” I call them on it.
ET you’ve done more than almost anyone else I know. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you want to do something different in the future, cool, but you’ve been way, way out there with your Corrie music.
Peace, bro.
Thanks, we made a contribution to Doctors without Borders.

A few nasty comments at the beginning, but the majority of comments were not against you. In fact, people do seem to be waking up to the fact anti-Semite is used as a weapon to deflect from having to discuss reality. The reality that the true anti-Semites are the politicians who use the phrase to defend their actions against the Jewish people’s best interests. Their own citizens are pawns in the pursuit of power.
I doubt that the Israeli people are pleased by the fact that their government, along with the US’s, are now the two most hated entities on planet earth. Now that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered Muslims around the world to defend Palestinians in any way possible, the average Israeli citizen is now in more danger than ever before. Iran is asking for volunteers to fight in Gaza. Bush may have finally ignited the whole Muslim Middle East against Israel. Blow back of the policy of US/Israel to commit genocide in Gaza, could be enormous.
Intafada? Well, that sure is going to get some attention. He is his father’s son, obviously. Meant in a positive way, of course.
Know what stands out for me in your article, ET? Your wisdom. That is not a product of a biased mindset.
Mindset is the problem. Readers and listeners who approach a subject with their perspectives already imprisoned are, I have found, the ones who affix labels, tags, derogatory names to those with whom they differ.
You and others here at FDL may never know the number of folks you have touched. I lurked about here for quite a while before I ever commented. Meanwhile, every article I read increased my understanding and broadened my scope about many subjects.
There will always be name-callers, ET. Remember, it’s the emptiest drum that makes the most noise.
Recommended, DUGG and commented there. You now have 12 DIGGS, ET.
Edward Teller I am sorry that this has happened to you. I support your efforts to bring clarity and honesty to this situation. I am sorry you were attacked and no one came to your aid. I am also sorry to say this is common when this inhuman and unacceptable situation for the Palestinians is brought up. Many serious attacks and needling by those who do not want this issue studied, discussed or f to be dealt with fairly and honestly. I do want to share with you that recently on a thread by Bmaz after he attacked me for responding to the topic others came to my aid. But more importantly others came to the aid of this critical
topic. This was new after having been attacked by others in the past.
Read the comments
http://emptywheel.firedoglake……the-table/
In fact last fall I was banned for arguing with a moderator about this situation over at the main thread. Of course this moderator who obviously had an agenda selectively claimed that I was off topic when you can find thread after thread on FDL where people go off topic.
I have been attacked by not only folks who participate at FDL but have had some of the main bloggers and moderators at this site allow such attacks to selectively take place. The so called progressive blogosphere has been cracking a bit over the last year in regard to this important issue. I have been deeply appreciative of EW’s willingness to allow real discussions to take place about the conflict. The deliberate lack of honest coverage by our MSM and for years now in the so called progressive blogosphere having to do with this conflict has been disturbing.
Crimes of this scale, the well thought out viciousness and disproportionate response by Israel is appalling and has been inflaming the middle east
for years
Thank you for your efforts and know that there are people who roam through the blogosphere purposely trying to shut down dialogue or discussions about this issue. Know you will be attacked and that some of the bloggers and sites have been attacked when they attempt to address this issue.
Keep it up and know you have support. Know your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Edward do not kid yourself there have been plenty of selective and unfair attacks at FDL and others sites (David Corn’s first website was shut down by attacks when this issue would come up) when folks have tried to bring attention to this critical issue (some for years).
There has been a bit of a shift at FDL over the last year due to Oxdown and awareness growing You can check through the archives of Huffington Post, Firedoglake, and other sites and see how much attention has been given to this critical issue and it’s importance in bringing peace to the middle east. The shameful complicity that has taken place in the media (both the MSM and the blogosphere) only serves to fuel the violence.
Through their very strong influence on our media the Israeli lobby and Israel have been able to successfully produce and promote fiction about what has and continues to take place in this conflict. Watching the growth of the progressive blogosphere and observing how any discussions about this issue (although seldom written about unless there is a disaster in the conflict) are attacked and then often silenced has been a short version of what has taken place in our MSM over the last 50 some years.
Watch groups focused on shutting down information about this conflict in our news, on U.S. campuses, and in the blogosphere
Campus Watch

Camera

Campus Watch, Camera, Aipac have attacked Former President Jimmy Carter, Noam Cholmsky, Professor Norm Finkelstein, Professor Juan Cole and other truth and peace seekers for shining light on this conflict

Hi Leen, Jane’s reiteration of why that was a problem:
http://firedoglake.com/2008/12…..ogosphere/
I have explained this several times to people who came in demanding coverage of the topic. But Jane says it well.
On the other hand, this is the issue that got me doing research on the Internet. 9/11 happened just over a year after I got my computer. The news coverage was pathetic. Whenever anyone would ask “Why do they hate us?”, the answer was always the same. “It’s US support of Israel” After which the interviewer would immediately change the subject. I would get into massive flamewars on blogs and forums with the results of my research. No, I didn’t start them. But I was called anti-simetic numerous times. So, I can empathize with ET.
BTW: ET, I went to the link you provided in book salon to the denouncing. I left a polite comment there.
http://alaskadistrict31.blogsp…..5864104555
Hamas leader Khaleed Mehaal calling for third Intifada.
To think that this disproportionate use of force by Israel may have the intention of undermining movement towards finding real solutions to the conflict.
I respect Jane and many of her efforts but do not be blind there were real roadblocks here at FDL. Real roadblocks and fear
Selective enforcement by the selective off topic police
If you really want to keep on top of what is taking place in this conflict go to Norman Finkelstein’s website , Juan Cole’s “Informed Comment”, Muzzlewatch, INformation Clearing House, Electronic Intifada, Democracy Now, Glen Greenwald is ripping it up.
Learn so much from Norman Finkelstein
http://www.normanfinkelstein.com/
Leen, it’s plain to see you have unresolved feelings over having been banned. Your posts here have been loaded with criticisms. It gets really painful to read. Your constant criticism is not fair to FDL and new readers. They weren’t fair in the beginning and are annoying now. If you don’t like being told “no”, get over it. This is not your blog.
Thanks for trying to educate me, Leen. I have those links. As I said, this is a major issue for me as well.
Jane is obviously right about the “shitstorms” but the abuse that took place by some moderators who are not omnipotent and some of them obviously have agendas themselves,(hello this is the way the MSM was shut down to discussing and reporting about this issue) The lack of information and the successful efforts of trolls and folks committed to shutting down the debate about this issue is a perfect opportunity for someone to study those successful efforts in the blogospere over a recent and sustained period of time.
It is too bad that it takes such a disproportionate violent response of Israel on a captive Palestinian population to blow open the professional bloggers willingness to write about this conflict.
Better late than never
I will bring up the evidence of BLOG CLOGS when appropriate and have found very receptive outlets for information sharing and education about this issue. Don’t kid yourself there are moderators who have agendas.
I have had a great deal of success at getting numerous blogs to open up and have also been successful at getting several grad students to take on projects and research on the successful efforts by some to shut down the dialogue and debates about the I/P conflict on Blogs for quite some time by attacking individuals. Their graduate projects when completed will be interesting.
Also productive success at getting Diane Rehm to do numerous shows on this issue over the years. There are cracks in the MSM and the light is getting in.
That is a fair assessment. Thank you. Jane once claimed not to know enough about it to be able to discuss it and that’s also fair. I would say she has had her plate full over the past few years and has done a huge amount of work, so I’m not holding her at fault for that. In fact, the work she’s done on our behalf makes her a personal hero of mine. I would never consider her cowardly. There’s no one I’d rather have on my side.
Edward Teller “As I’m witnessing this devastation continue in Gaza and the West Bank, even though I’ve spoken out against Zionist aggression, I can’t help but feel that had I done more, been more effective, I could have helped.”
I know you must be aware of Former President Jimmy Carter’s efforts to bring peace to this conflict. (I have always thought part of Jimmy’s failures were do to his efforts to approach this issue more fairly and honestly). His book “Palestine Peace Not Apartheid” is a must read.
This talk by Norman is a great listen
http://www.normanfinkelstein.c…..38;ar=1464
That’s wonderful! Keep up the good work. The mods at FDL are (or were) volunteers and I can’t speak for them. But there’s been some burnout and I don’t know who all moderates anymore. Claiming they have an agenda without specifying which one doesn’t help matters. I can’t dispute what you say, but how can you be sure they weren’t just doing their best to follow directives?
Jane is hard working and obviously committed to truth, justice and to many issues and I too admire her…really admire her. But I have witnessed real blog clogs over the years when it comes to this issue and believe it fed into the ongoing violence and lack of understanding about this issue. There are cracks and the light is coming in.
Many in the blogosphere seem progressive on so many issues but often take a hard turn right (wrong) when this issue comes up. Often not knowing much but often fearful.
If we approach this topic fairly and more informed all will benefit.
Audrey Amy Goodman is especially fair about this topic. You are probably well aware of her work. Some of her interviews and debates with Allen Derhshowitz, Jimmy Carter, Bishop Tutu and others on this conflict are well worth listening to if you have not all ready done so.

Pro Israel
Pro Peace

AIPAC = Mossad
Tin foil hat? The day after AIPAC expressed irritation over Darcy Burner’s acceptance of the endorsement by JStreet, her house burned down. Just supposing.
BBL
Hey we know how much power Aipac has. After there two topic officials were caught allegedly passing on U.S. classified intelligence to Israeli officials. The trial has been delayed five times, the investigation and trial have not been touched by the MSM and also the progressive blogosphere
Now that is power and influence. Whole topic OFF LIMITS

Leen,
I’m working on other stuff t my blog, wrapping up our kinky year in Alaska.
I’m glad you and Audrey had an opportunity to discuss the OT topic here. It is related to the subject I brought forth in this diary, so thanks for enriching it. I’ve read most of Jimmy Carter’s books. Palestine – Peace, not Apertheid was good, but a bit clouded by his Sunday school teacher lecturing style. The book is mostly important because so many saw this man of peace vilified for telling what he honestly saw as a basic set of truths.
That approach used to really annoy me when he was President. Thanks, ET

Gee, why would anyone think antisemitism goes on here?
Tags: Hamas only wants the destruction of Israel; the people in Gaza didn’t really want to elect Hamas as their legal representatives, the people only voted for them out of spite for Fatah.
do you know what the % was for hamas?
israel is a nation. it includes jews and non jews among it’s citizens. is it not the representative of jews in the world and criticism of israel, even tin foil hat questions, do not represent criticisms of jews let alone anti-semitism.
During Mussolini’s rise to power he sought my grandfathers support & for him to accept a senior position. Instead he went about making speeches denouncing Mussolini. There were numerous attempts on his life and after a car bombing nearly wiped out the entire family he et al fled to Dublin. My mother, her sister and three brothers could not tolerate it there and being away from Italy so all returned and went into the underground. My mother took a position in the Nazi headquarters working in a section that dealt with all of the train movements throughout Italy. At night, after curfew she would sneak into the hills with food and info. My uncles and their group would blow up tracks and otherwise derail many trains. They rescued very many jews among others bound for hell. They provided clothes, IDs, and transport to safety. As the allies progressed thru Italy two of my uncles were attached to the American generals and were both guides and translaters. My mother became my fathers secretary when he became the Asst commandant of occupied Milan. I am very proud of my family’s history and if someone dares to call me anti-semetic I spit in their eye. Israel, the country has become the vile continuation of Nazi Germany.
oops

Criticism of the Israeli government is not antisemitism. Suggestions that Israel’s spy service is running around burning down American houses? You’re getting warmer.
Thanks ET for this great post – and for all you do.
Thanks for making the point of ET’s post. It is not anti-semitic to support JStreet or criticize AIPAC.
The actions of your parents and grandparents do not give you a free lifetime pass. You are responsible for your own words.
It is not de facto antisemitic to criticize AIPAC. But when people make comments that AIPAC is secretly controlling American media, they are veering very close to the sort of comments that neo-nazis like to make about a “Zionist Occupied Government.” This sends up red flags with some people.
red flags are fine – but that’s not what you wrote.
people sure are sensitive on this subject, i agree. that is why it must be discussed.
ET Israel does have a Left that does not support what is happening now. Are the Right Wing Nut cases willing to call Jews in Israel antisemties too? Its sad that we on the Left have some of these worship Authority types on our side.
These are the same people who thought that criticizing Bush was being unpatriotic.
But you know what we were right!
The jews who make excuses for the nasty behavior of the zionist state are a pain in the ass. Frankly I have no use for most religious fanatics and fundies. I wish they would practice their religious beliefs in their homes and places of worships and not in public.
Israel is a theocracy.
Until it becomes a democracy I have no use for it. I am for the dissolution of Israel as is now constituted, not that it matters.
Diary Bud! Sounds like a great story!
yes, some characterizations are unfortunate but true.
They are called self hating jews.
Some years back I received an e-mail telling me to sign a petition to take away the Nobel Prize of Yasser Arafat. I responded (in reply all) that I would not do that.
A sh**storm followed in which I too was called anti-Semitic. Then someone sent me a list of all the Jewish recipients of Nobel awards over the years compared to the number of Arab/Muslim recipients.
To which I had another response that I considered reasonable.
I have never been fully forgiven for that “incident” or “antic” as another described it.
This is a difficult issue, and it is one that we need to continue to try to address. Thanks for taking it on ET.
I say they split the country and the capital of course I would also let Jews hold service in the Dome of the Rock Mosque. I’m worried that if Israel blows it up accidentally in a war every Muslim will go to war, so let them share.
thank you for that. i got yer back.
i don’t believe muslims will let the dome go that cheap.
AIPAC is notorious for a reason, KK. It represents the same extreme Zionism that is determined to destroy Palestinians. There have been spy scandals attached to the organization and one currently going through the courts that’s been delayed time and again over the years. To be pro-Palestinian because of the injustices perpetrated against them by Israeli Apartheid, is not anti-Semetic either, because Palestinians are Semites. Our complicity in the crimes committed is what bothers most of us the most, IMO.

http://www.mediamonitors.net/khodr49.html
LOL – worse. some of the settlers at kedumin, when they thought the group i was with were peace now, blocked our way on the road and took all our pictures while one of their group informed us repeated in a very loud voice that her father killed jews like us (and that the pictures were to be used to identify us for that purpose). that was just the start of a very scary day, but the story is too long to tell here.
Do I smell another diary in there? *G*
Its self hating when as a weaker group you identify with the strong one oppressing you for example Clarence Thomas and the Uncle Tom types.
Its true courage to want to help and be friends with an outgroup or person from an outgroup that your group is picking on or invading all the time because you risk the condemnation yourself and or possibly death.
Sometimes I think the Right hears a word we use and tries to adopt it for their own purpose but they have no true understanding of it because, well they lack empathy.
They lack the ability to put facts ahead of ideas that rationalize their own greed. If you can’t do that then all facts become fluid their value is evaluated according to their relative ability to get you what you want.
Its an Id driven world view where ego and super ego are secondary.
This is all very interesting to speculate on but even in a scf fi plot it would be to fantastic to be believed, before Bush that is.
Everyone has to share until it hurts then its far:) besides can Israel claim they can make a cooler looking building they can both worship in? We need these people to share to become a community.
how to deal with bullying 101.
don’t kids get taught this nowadays?
nah. it was years ago, and i suck at writing that kind of thing.
See my 64 I grew up brown in an all white neighborhood I know the feeling about going down a street you probably should not have because of people like this. In my case though they didn’t see me as a traitor they saw me as an enemy.
The Boondocks Comic strip on the episodes on the Cartoon network show the brown kid in Burbs plight plus they are as funny as hell.
They do?
Too bad. I’d Digg and Recommend it. Sounds so interesting. Oh well. I suck at writing some things too.
I thought they grew up and became writers? Hemingway said something about Oak Park Illinois where I was born a city of Broad Lawns and narrow minds.
My family moved to the burbs and let me tell you a nice lawn is the measure of a man there.
I am perfectly willing to be responsible for my words – but when those words are descriptive of abusive actions on the part of the Israelis and the response is that of being anti -semetic I get livid. It is the arrogance of since we are jewish any thing we do is ok and if you think not you are anti-semetic. Talk about thinking one has a free lifetime pass.

maybe not? i thought i’d read something along those lines a while ago (as a response to bullying in school). will have to check with my teacher friends. i could be full of shit (once again).
p.s. love love love mcgruder – stared reading the boondocks comic strip right after 911 when he was one of the few public voices who hadn’t gone batshit crazy. used to cut out the strips and post them at work. drove the warmongers and anti-muslim, anti-arab types nuts.
thanks. sorry. maybe some day when i feel like i have something worth saying.
The Sharon quote is a hoax that originated in a Hamas press release.

Palestinians are Semites.
Russian Jews, not so much…
I suggest that you discuss that with MJ Rosenberg and the folks at J-Street, who have said that very thing.
You might want to take that up with MJ Rosenberg and the folks over at J-Street who have said that very thing.
Here is an IF. If the U.S. heavily and without restraint armed the I.R.A. and consistently expressed support for their actions, while not a single Protestant was ever in the U.S. Administration, they’d still be blowing each other to hell.
Obama (apologists will say he isn’t president yet) issued statements about an Illinois senate seat (he is not even a senator). He can get motivated about a senate appointment, but he will not condemn the violence. Why? He is just being respectful of Bush’s role as president? One would be pretty audacious to hope that were true.
Sorry for the double post, not sure how that happened.
The reason people move when the shit hits the fan is the reason the US came into existence. The reason the Palestinian conflict exists is because the people who stay behind will never “move” in their thinking and find a new place to live. Look at the Irish, look at the Serbians and look at the Tutsis and Hutus. There are those who will never “move” in their traditions, in their thinking and in the education of their children. They will never accept their neighbor’s right to worship, to participate in their community affairs or to just plain live in peace. The meek might inherit the earth but unfortunately, conservatives/traditionalists/nationalists will always force the rest of us to “move.” Maybe that’s the price of enlightenment?
Well, it is possible that Obama remembers and respects the old tradition that the partisan conflicts and such are supposed to stop at the shore/border. And he might even remember the problems that have occurred when folks in incoming admins screwed around with the foreign policy before they were officially on the hook for it.
I’m willing to cut PEBO some slack for caring about the Senate seat he had been holding prior to becoming President-elect. I think to an extent, it is a part of human nature to care about a position he had filled and a state he had represented.
And he will be on the hook for the I/P conflict soon enough.
Nawh, they call them “self-hating” jews.
This thread reminds me of a conversation I was having with my son during the Lebanon offensive. I was very upset with Israel for the overly aggressive bombing (which I felt was uncalled for) and he responded:”My God, Mom, you’re anti-semitic!” Now, my son has known me all of his life and he still came out with such a ridiculous statement. It seems people see you through the lens of their own view of the world. Even your children. (Once, during a conversation on health care reform, he shouted “my God, Mom, you’re a Socialist!”) We don’t talk politics or world affairs anymore.
The antisemitism card is one of a handful that can be used to stop debate by changing the subject. Those cards are inherently dangerous. They are inevitably abused. There’s a whole industry of professional anti-antisemites who do nothing but play that card as a means of stopping debate.
Antisemitism does exist, and it should be highlighted, exposed, and condemned when it appears. The same goes for false accusations of antisemitism. The pro-Israel lobby has for years used false accusations of antisemitism to stifle debate over the relationship between the U.S. and Israel, and over Israel’s behavior.
Fortunately, I think the antisemitism card has been played so often, and so recklessly, that it is losing its power to intimidate.
It helps that there are groups in this country like J-Street, who have the moral authority to call bullshit on this. It is interesting that there is more open opposition to these attacks and reporting of that opposition in Israel than here. The bully boys and girls at AIPAC have been very successful in intimidating our MSM.
One matter that really should concern us is how this whole issue has been effectively censored over many years in US Political Discussion. You know the first victims of this censorship were really Republicans, Senator Charles Percy of Illinois, and Representative Paul Findley, 11 term Congressman from Illinois. Paul Findley wrote a book “They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel’s Lobby” (Lawrence Hill, 1985). — good luck finding it in any library, there was a nationwide project to steal it off the shelves when it was first published. Anyhow, the success of the Lobby in defeating Findley and Percy put the fear of god into Congress, even though privately many Republicans and Democrats of that era agreed with Findley’s book and had great sympathy with his experience.
More recently, John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt’s “The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy” has been targeted for the same treatment, but of interest, with much less effect. That came out just last year, and it has gotten excellent circulation. In lots of ways you can see that people have read it, because themes out of it as well as wording now shows up in a variety of sources. I would suggest that the uproar over Hagee’s endorsement of McCain and then the rejection of the endorsement happened because M&W gave good coverage to Hagee in their book, thus the factual material was at hand. Ultimately both Percy and Findley in their day, and Mearsheimer and Walt today are asking the same question — is blind support of anything Israel wants or does good US Foreign Policy? Does it represent US Interests? I would contend this is the way to frame the issue, it is much less likely that the anti-Semitism call-out will stick if it is framed as Policy.
When Findley first published his book, he did something of a book tour — not in bookstores, but he had a following in things like Councils of World Affairs, and some UN Support organizations, and I went along to one of these, met him, and discovered that he was a good friend of my Congressman at the time. Both served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and had together been the bi-partisian team on several UN missions. Later I had fairly lengthy discussions with that Congressperson (not mentioning name here intentionally) and learned much that I was just beginning to suspect about the kinds of pressure that were common — damn brutal pressure. Without question the only way that pressure will diminish and become less effective is if the censorship is firmly ended. Unless there are people talking, and organizations publishing freely, the brutal pressure is all public figures experience. So every time AIPAC wants a sense of the congress resolution, everyone runs to sign on for fear being a few minutes late will gain one the treatment Percy and Findley received.
I could add a great deal more on this — but let me make just one additional observation. Can anyone find a very respectable professional poll on American Attitudes toward our policy vis a vis Israel? My understanding is that groups such as ORC, Gallup and Harris have long been pressured NOT to do the polling, or at least not do any that would subsequently be published. I am not interested in polling of the lesser informed — the folk who do not regularly follow the news, but I would be interested in something reflecting how reasonably well informed people see things, on a number of dimensions. I actually believe there is considerable support for something like an “American Interests” discourse as related to Israel in the mix of what we term Middle East Policy — and there is censorship regarding that fact.
I understand Obama caring about his former position, but I don’t understand how it would have been inappropriate to simply express his repulsion for the bloodshed. At a minimum it would show that he cares more about human suffering than his former senate seat.
that would be believable if he hadn’t gone to aipac and said all that nonsense about an undivided jerusalem, etc – stuff that was contrary to our actual foreign policy. that’s why i don’t buy that obama’s silence is for the reasons you describe (i’d be happy to have some reason to believe though, if there’s something i don’t know and you can fill me in on).
sara, any suggestions on how to approach otherwise semi-reasonable members of congress nowadays? i’ve been completely frustrated with my rep (jim mcgovern) for years on this issue (and he is quite good on some other peace and justice issues – like closing the SOA).
I have no special insight or knowledge. Just pure speculation on why PEBO might not be willing to stick his d*ck in the wringer before he’s even been sworn into office and has to take responsibility.
I would hope that it would be fine to take responsibility for expressing repulsion for bloodshed, unless all that bloodshed and death was actually U.S. foreign policy, in which case his silence would be understandable.
Excellent, ET. Dialogue is a good starting place, badly needed.
No, it’s not.
And, the suggestion was not “burning down American houses.” The suggestion was the burning of one home of a specific American, someone running for the American senate/office who was considered not to be an avid supporter of Israeli govt policies/actions.
“sara, any suggestions on how to approach otherwise semi-reasonable members of congress nowadays? i’ve been completely frustrated with my rep (jim mcgovern) for years on this issue (and he is quite good on some other peace and justice issues – like closing the SOA).”
Not really my idea, but I’d start by reading Mearsheimer & Walt, and getting others to read it, and start the conversation. Their last chapter is titled “What is to be done?” and it is what you would expect from academics — a study and discussion guide that anyone can use to start the necessary conversations.
These guys are about as “Establishment” as you can get in the US Foreign Policy Community. Mearsheimer is the director of the Program on International Security at the University of Chicago (named chair) and Walt holds another named chair in International Relations at both Harvard and the JFK School of Government. Their first version of the book was commissioned for The Atlantic, but then rejected, and ultimately published in the London Review of Books — and it damn near clogged up Uncle Ted’s tubes when half a million people downloaded it. “The Lobby” went nuts, but the net could handle what happened, everyone started reviewing it on blogs, and eventually in some serious reviews. So then Farrah, Straus and Giroux put cash advances on the line, and brought out a huge printing of the book, a more expansive development of the London Review piece, and it really sold. Yep, an Academic Book, half of which is footnotes. (and these are modern academics, many of their notes begin with www, so you can attack the ones that look interesting from your comfy computer nest.) Moreover they keep publishing bits and pieces in various journals and all — so they have done what they suggested, namely start the conversation, end the censorship.
In the end we need to understand the difference between an argument about who is and who isn’t anti-Semitic, and a very different one, about American Interests upon which Foreign Policy is based. The first argument is a dead end — you are a bad person, no I’m not, yes you are, no I’m not, and your mother is a whore anyhow…. and the much more complex discussion about national interests. You just have to get the discussion totally removed from the personal gamemanship.
By the way, I would not spend a whole lot of time on one congresscritter, they will respond when they see the discourse is for real.
Because, according to Tom Hayden, if you want to be elected to public office in this country, you must toe the AIPAC line. IOW: Don’t step on Israel’s toes. Don’t threaten to withdraw funding or to support the UN sanctions against Israel’s illegal acts. According to KenoshaKid, the statement by Sharon was a hoax. But was it true? Does Israel control America? How many times has the US vetoed actions taken by the US to try to rein in Israel from committing atrocities against their supposed enemies?
. . .”oth tags used against defenders of Palestinian right”?
Well, for starters, if you identify as a Jew, you will draw the label “self-hater” from the self-appointed holocaust PC police. Usually its accompanied by some really vile names, epithets of disgust, derision, etc., often in Hebrew or Yiddish.
Sorry for the misspellings at #108
BTW, it seems to me that it is the conflation of the notion of Jewishness and Judaism with the political actors and entity called Israel that underlies the force of the anti-Semitism charge. Deconstructing that false equation takes far more effort, and can seem counterintuitive — certainly far less persuasive on its face than the simple emotional scream “Anti-Semite”. It is, however, an important point to continue making.
yes, the flagrant usage of “anti-semite” to characterize critics of israel has widespread currency. i have likened it to the usage of “n*gg*r lover” in the amerikan south to describe citizens working for civil rights. in apartheid south africa, i think that the epithet was “kaffir lover”.
and the “anti-semite” epithet, or better still, “self-hating jew” directed at jewish anti-zionists[i recall that this was alan dershowitz’es favorite slander of norm finkelstein] has lots of power at many purportedly progressive blog/internet sites. for many jews, these cartoon phrases are enough to propel them out of the trenches with violence on their minds.
some years ago, at the daily kos site, one of the founding members, a steve gilliard became so incensed by an indictment of israel that i wrote that he erased me from the site. erased all my past posts. wrote a program instruction that prevented me from ever posting again under my name and ip address. i learned this from one of the webmasters who was quite shocked by it. there was no nasty language in my essay. it was mostly scholarly. but it contradicted many things that gilliard had written. so, my repartee epithet is “anti-intellectual”.
i have been a target of similar “anti-semite” epithets at eschaton and at digby’s hullaballoo site. in those instances, posters demanded that i be banned for writing about israel’s slow-motion genocide by attrition of all palestinians. to the best of my recollection, i was never banned. and i was allowed to parry the thrust of their insulting “anti-semite” characterization. a parrying that no one responded to with any facts of figures.
steve soto, another markos moulitsas acolyte of steve gilliard rank, did ban me from his site, however. just another “anti-intellectual” i think.
the oddest aspect of the “anti-semite” epithet as used by jews is how inaccurate it is. in the scheme of reality, as a defender of palestinians, i am a “pro-semite”.
just for the sake of accuracy, all palestinians are semitic. but all israeli jews are not. in fact, i think i am correct when i identify the majority[60%-80%] of israeli jews as being of non-semitic origin. so, the term “anti-semite” is one that is best used to describe all those israeli jews involved in the genocide of the palestinians.
in the usa, one of the dominating “spins” describing the israeli genocide of the palestinians is that it is an “anti-islamic” endeavor. this captures the goodwill of the fundamentalist christian crusaders. little recognized is that the israeli genocide of palestinians targets christian palestinians as well as islamic palestinians. it calls to mind that old west sobriquet, the only good injun is a dead injun.
it is my understanding that approximately 25% of the palestinians exposed to the israeli assault forces[iaf, not idf] are christian. and catholic christians. the iaf assault on these catholic christians is/was/has been/will be as merciless as the iaf assaults on islamic palestinians.
it is my recollection that is with this understanding, pope john paul 2 revitalized the equestrian order of the holy sepulchre. giving it the mission to try to preserve christian sites in the holy land from the depredations of the israeli government. he did this based on the iaf targeting catholic schools and hospitals, who were educating/caring for palestinians[the zionist israeli state has no real interest in protecting any non-jew stake in the holy land].
i have gone on for too long, perhaps. it is a thread that i could continue, however, if there would be any interest.
well, he’s my congress critter – and as i said, he’s been pretty good on issues of war and peace, he works well with the peace activists. but it’s just a brick wall on I/P, even though he really ought to know better. there are activists in town who he has worked with on SOA related (even calling one of them patriot at a press conference prior to the activist going to prison for 4 mos in GA for stepping over the line at the SOA protest that year). jim wants to been seen as an ally of the peace community – and for the most part he is (for a politician).
i haven’t read mearsheimer and walt’s book (just the article in the LRB). maybe that would give me some insight.
but my question was really in preparation for tomorrow – the local protest re gaza is being held at his office. i don’t expect a sudden change from him…. but we must try. if for nothing else than as a show of solidarity with the local palestinian american members of our community.
thanks.
others who tend to be squeamish in discussing I/P: Jeralyn at TL (one wonders how she and Jane hit it off?); John at Americablog. One hopes they are educable, because that’s far prefeerable than calling names.
“Mearsheimer & Walt” are great, for the readers and thinkers. They have taken their share of flack from the neocon thugs and their enablers.
WELL, THERE IS SOME INTRIGUING CENSORSHIP AT THIS SITE.
you can see what i wrote that was allowed an airing.
but here is what you were not allowed to read….
but in closing, i would suggest that there are some areas for consideration that should put a different light on israel.
1. was bernard madoff an israeli asset? i say this because the bushit sec has decided not to make public the harbor[s] of the madoff looting. is it israeli banks? with ties to the israeli intell services? that was my appraisal when the madoff scam became public. today, i am finding that others are catching that scent.
2. is israel a friend of the usa? or is israel just a gangster state who learned how to shake down the usg? many of you know of the israeli spy, johnathan pollard. but do you know that the results of his spying were sold to russia by israel?
and though virtually unmentioned, do you know that yesterday, ben-ami kadish, a jewish-american citizen was convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for israel, having furnished israel us missile secrets for decades?
there are other similar israeli agent espionage stories/convictions that have occurred that have gone unpublicized.
3. do you find it an interesting bit of “spin” when organized crime activity in the usa is characterized as being of “italian/sicilian” management. so, we get the SOPRANOS.
i think that in the organized crime scheme of things, it would have been more accurate to have aired a show entitled the SIEGELS. or the BRONFMANS. or the ROSENSTIELS. or the LANSKYS. or the DALITZes.
in the USA’s prohibition era, these families would have been considered TERRORISTS[had that been a phrase for that era. GANGSTERS was the phrase then]. after prohibition, with their loot acquired by terrorist activities, they became philanthropists. and the purchasers of politicians.
4. the illusion is that the IRGUN was folded into the IAF[falsely described as the IDF] at the conclusion of the successful jew terrorist war to seize palestine. i think that the IRGUN continues to exist. rahm emmanuel’s father was a member of the irgun. the irgun, much like la cosa nostra, the cia, remains a family thing. is rahm emmanuel a member of this latter day irgun. i am certain of it.
5. do you recall deborah palfrey? who was operating an “escort” service in the DC area. you know, she was a contractor to a number of intell services who were using her stable for blackmailing purposes. the outfit. and the mossad/shin bet.
how many american pols do you think are on film in a bunker in tel aviv?
all of the congress? all of the cabinet?
6. i want you to consider hotels constructed so as to conduct surveillance/filming of each room. two major hotel chains.
one owned by the Tisch family. perfervid zionists. the first hotel i ever encountered that was operated as a “honey trap” – the lowe’s l’enfant plaza. i remain convinced that at its heart the watergate affair was partly a mossad honey trap operation.
the four seasons. founded by isidore sharp, i think, so as to launder canadian mob money.
i won’t spend any time here this day to discuss the mossad’s involvement in drug trafficking, nor its alliances with the russian mafiya. nor its recent contracts to provide security for major ports in the usa. nor its contracts to administer telephonic systems for amerikan security services.
and i won’t spend any time here to discuss joseph bodansky and his creation of the legend of usama bin laden. nor those other dual passporters, michael chertoff, richard perle, jack abramoff, douglas feith, elliot abrams et alia ad infinitum. we can discuss that 5th column later, if you want to.
and i won’t discuss the houston rabbi friedman foundation, which was responsible for bailing george walker bush out of his cocaine trafficking bust. by the way, it was also this foundation that financed joseph bodansky. i consider it a mossad cover entity.
and i won’t go into how it was that an israeli jew, ilan pappe was driven out of israel for his historical monographs on the history of the theft of palestine.
and i won’t discuss today how it has been that maria gillardin, TUCRADIO.ORG, has been targeted by the zionist/jew establishment for giving norm finkelstein, ilan pappe air on pacifica.
but, here are some sites that you might find educational.

Yeah, its a crazy as saying Israel attacked a US ship.

I think you hit the target with that statement, dejadejavu!
You forgot “Christ-killers.”
Yeah, real “courageous” post there, ET. Not like you’re preaching to the, um, choir, or anything.
Albertchampion does not = ET, doncha know. As to courage, would you, perchance, be implying that FDL is a hotbed of, ahem, “antisemitism”? Or to what lengths, exactly, are you going?
I’ve been trying to continue memorizing some Scarlatti keyboard sonatas (K. 457, K. 469, L. 433 & L. 430 )today, and just discovered through correspondence with Eric Boehlert a little while ago, that this diary had been front-paged.
I’ll be here for a while to answer any questions…..
((((( E T ))))) Renaissance guy!
Actually, Scarlatti sort of bridged the late homophonic Baroque and the Galante, with touch of Spanish flavor. Nobody else is quite like him.
Who the fuck are you, and what do you mean?
Yust a little yolking to lighten up the grey day. Have not touched in with FDL in some years. Being on my backside again for awhile I chose not to watch fb (Pac-10 5-0) and re-up and de-lurk. Interesting discussion and a fine diary! Hears to the New Year and measured winning seasons for the planet and inhabitants.
*ilbo,
As a Pac 10 fan, I gotta say, though, that the USC blowout wasn’t very exciting.
War does that too. Then, seeing all the destruction, death and the inevitability of your defeat and possible death leads back to a desire for discussion.
Curious horrific loop.
maybe I should come on more positively to juste, eh….?
Well ya think there might be an oil depot or two added to the mess? How ’bout them Ducks!
Hi ET: Awesome that it got front paged. If you’re still here, so am I. The memorization sounds like fun. /s
Anyway, I’m in a thread on another network, same subject, similar arguments. I could burn out on this in no time at all. Just thought I’d let you know you are not alone.
OK, we’ll start with the no-brainer proposition that criticizing Israel does not make one anti-Semitic (or anti-Jew, to satisfy the historical/linguistic purists about who is a Semite.)
It does NOT follow from that, that NO criticism of Israel is motivated by anti-Jewness — nor that all of the indiscriminate Israel-bashing which is popular on this side of the blogosphere is free from anti-Jewness.
Unless you’re suggesting that there is no such thing as anti-Jewness in the United States today? And if so, how about racism? That gone too?
Or is that A*PAC has totally succeeded in the “hearts and minds” department? In addition to controlling the banks, the Congress, and all branches of local law enforcement, it has succeeded in eradicating all anti-Jewness? WOW, that conspiracy is more omnipotent than you thought! Eh?
And — since you’ve indicated you’re willing to answer questions — here’s another one. What is YOUR response to commenter 113?
Juste, ET fairly asked what you meant by your post at 116. It also seems your laboring under a misapprehension about what “this side” of the blogosphere is all about. No one has denied that anti-Semitism exists. The complaint is about using the term as a tool to silence discussion. OTOH, it’s impossible to know if someone who is an anti-Semite and is hiding it, if they are that at a glance or from a cursory overview. It seems you question ET’s courage. Based on what? Do you know anything about him or his experiences? What I’m getting at is, a sarcastic, snarky post directed at the author is not likely to get you a warm reception no matter which side of the blogosphere you’re on.
As for 113. Whew! I thought I had the market cornered on tinfoil. No judgment about the content is being made here, but I’d be googling till next Thursday to run down all the names in there for verification. But that’s not a conversation I’m willing to have right now so I’ll pass.
I pretty much agree with you. Thanks for clarifying. If you check the link to my Dailykos post on this, you’ll read near the end how I cover just what you bring up here, juste.
My April 8, 2004 speech covered many aspects of this in almost tedious detail.
screeching “antisemite” seems has long been a smokescreen for bad behavior. the folks who hide behind it are no better than the evangelicals who hide behind jesus.
While Audrey’s comment was slightly over the top even for me. There is no denying that Aipac has a disproportionate amount of influence on our Congress on our media (how do you explain no one and I mean no one in the MSM or the progressive blogosphere discussing, explaining, researching, reporting anything about the investigation of two former heads in Aipac being investigated for passing classified intelligence allegedly having to do with Iran off to Israeli officials) and no one in the media is touching it?
http://www.fas.org/sgp/jud/aipac/index.html
How do you explain those Israeli students being caught for allegedly spying by the F.B.I. just after 9/11 and then being sent back to Israel. Very little written in our media about this.
Justin Raimando has written about this issue
http://www.antiwar.com/israeli-files.php
How do you explain the four part series about Israeli based communication systems and the possibility that spying is being conducted through this system. That these systems may have been infiltrated. How do you explain a basic black out in the news about this?
http://www.informationclearing…..le7545.htm
Although I don’t think Audrey is far off by saying that “Aipac = Mossad”
Aipac has a huge influence on what gets covered about them in the media. How much have you read or heard about the U.S. Vs. Rosen/Weissman investigation and 5 time delayed trial? O well one time I heard Chris Matthews whisper that the trial had been delayed once again.
Here at FDL they have not touched this investigation or 5 time delayed trial? Why? Diane Rehm Talk of the Nation even Amy Goodman has not done any interviewing or reporting about this trial.
Can you imagine any other top officials from a lobbying organization whose main focus is lobbying for funding, support, sales of defense materials for another country (in Aipac’s case for Israel) from another country (say Italy, Poland, Ireland) being caught passing on classified intelligence (which many say has undermined U.S. national security) to officials for that country our media would be all over it like flies on shit. But when it comes to Aipac officials being indicted for these alleged crimes the media does not touch the story.
Come on this case alone demonstrates the massive power of Aipac and other support groups for Israel.
During the last week the coverage on the I/P conflict has been lop-sided once again. But how could one expect anything else? The history of any fair and balanced reporting when it comes to this conflict has been extremely lop-sided in the states. Now Israel will not even let any journalist into the Gaza. Why? Why is the MSM ignoring this? They should be pounding Israel for this. The MSM pounded Sarah for not being accessible to questions.
During the last week we keep hearing how Israel wants the rockets to stop from the Gaza. Why no coverage about why Hamas keeps sending those rockets. Why no coverage about how Hamas wants Israel out of ALL of the occupied territories, the wall to stop. Why no focus on the International World Courts decisions years ago that Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian territory and that the wall is illegal.
http://www.choike.org/nuevo_eng/informes/2183.html
http://findarticles.com/p/arti….._n21361860
The World Court (a conservative body). The court called on Israel to cease building the wall. Not much in our news about this.
Jane was squeamish for a long time also. It is great that light is coming into the so called progressive blogosphere about this issue. There were so many ways for the pro bloggers to take on this issue (you know the issue that most people in the middle east have been saying for years is the most critical issue) over the years.
Articles about how Arch Bishop Tutu had a speaking engagement in Minnesota having to do with this conflict canceled. Why?
How Campus Watch and other radical groups did everything they could to keep Former Jimmy Carter off of campuses to talk about his latest book “Palestine Peace Not Apartheid”
How Professor NOrman Finkelstein was attacked by many radical Pro Israel groups.
How Professor Juan Cole has been attacked for writing about this issue.
How the International World Court determined years ago that the Wall is illegal, how Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian lands (Israel and the I lobby spins these as “disputed” lands
So many ways for the heavy hitter pro bloggers to take on this topic. Many here at FDL will say well Selise has written about this issue (and she of he has) but it has much more impact when one of the Pro bloggers take it on
Now if only the increasing awareness can have some impact on the powers that be, Congress, the Pres, etc., so that meaningful policy change can occur to break the logjam in the mideast. So long as the US is the stumbling block to a less intransigeant Israel (can it be that US policy is sooooo right and the rest of the world soooooo wrong??) we will continue to get what we got.
I keep going back to the conservative International World Courts decisions. Settlements illegal, wall illegal, occupying Palestinian lands illegal
Robert Fisk (a history lesson)
Why bombing Ashkelon is the most tragic irony
Robert Fisk:
How easy it is to snap off the history of the Palestinians, to delete the narrative of their tragedy, to avoid a grotesque irony about Gaza which – in any other conflict – journalists would be writing about in their first reports: that the original, legal owners of the Israeli land on which Hamas rockets are detonating live in Gaza. That is why Gaza exists: because the Palestinians who lived in Ashkelon and the fields around it – Askalaan in Arabic – were dispossessed from their lands in 1948 when Israel was created and ended up on the beaches of Gaza. They – or their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren – are among the one and a half million Palestinian refugees crammed into the cesspool of Gaza, 80 per cent of whose families once lived in what is now Israel. This, historically, is the real story: most of the people of Gaza don’t come from Gaza.
STRONG STATEMENT BY FISK
Alas for the Palestinians, their most powerful political voice – I’m talking about the late Edward Said, not the corrupt Yassir Arafat (and how the Israelis must miss him now) – is silent and their predicament largely unexplained by their deplorable, foolish spokesmen. “It’s the most terrifying place I’ve ever been in,” Said once said of Gaza. “It’s a horrifyingly sad place because of the desperation and misery of the way people live. I was unprepared for camps that are much worse than anything I saw in South Africa.”
