Howard Kurtz drops this tidbit into his column:
The company may have been more pleasant than that of McCain aides, who have barred Dowd from the candidate’s plane.
If the Obama campaign banned a FoxNews Reporter from the plane, I’m sure it would be the greatest crime against the first amendment ever committed. MoDo banned — one sentence, no explanation.

Should we expect all sorts of columns in the next month that are as hard on McCain as she was on Gore and Kerry?
Standard McCain/Schmidt ref-working: They’re making an example of Dowd in the hope that the rest of the press will fall back into line again, as they have so many times before. As Mistah Kurtz states, his colleagues are already toning down their writings on Palin to avoid the appearance of picking on her.
Depends on whether she (or more importantly, her bosses or their bosses) are cowed by this. Steve Schmidt’s decided to go in a full-on war against the NYT, and for their sake I hope the NYT is going to the mattresses in response.
I hope you are right. Of course, “Bobo” Brooks will think highly of Schmidt’s manuever, I am sure.
And where’s WaPo in this mix? That wasn’t the only tidbit in Kurtz’ missive this morning — CBS has more tape of Palin’s interview with Couric that wasn’t released.
Is WaPo playing good cop to NYT’s bad cop?
And did CBS give the McCain campaign a donation-in-kind by withholding damaging content?
Sure would be nice to have a media that didn’t require a grasp of real politik to get to the truth.
No
Another installment of simple answers to simple questions.
MoDo should be banned from all campaign planes, and all editorial pages forever, for her crimes against journalism.
oh noooooooooooooze!

OT – Breaking, Breaking, Breaking!
Here it is: An Investigation into the Removal of Nine U.S. Attorneys in 2006, September 2008
and for their sake I hope the NYT is going to the mattresses in response.
It certainly appears that they’re not only willing and able, but way enthusiastic about it so far. They’re *killin’* McGrumpy.
Was it Mark Twain who cautioned against fighting with anyone who buys ink by the barrel?
MoDo being MoDo, I’m sure we’ll hear all about it.
Does anyone know what Dowd does now? Does she follow McCain’s campaign by commercial air lines (seems a difficult thing to do) or just cover his campaign from afar. Dowd thinks Obama should hit back harder. She gives him what may or may not be good advice, but I believe she is on his side.
Welcome, Ari!
So glad Oxdown is finally up. (If you’ve been hankering to write your own diary on FDL, now you can do it!)

Oh, and here’s a Digg bleg.
Going to war with the NYT is a tried and true Republican tactic. It will raise millions of dollars for the McCain campaign. The press has been “picking on” the Republicans since the Pentagon papers and Watergate, to hear them tell it. The paranoia knows no bounds and the good little donors send in their contributions eagerly. If it also has the effect of quelling the press, that’s just the topping on the cake. It’s really about the money.
Bizarre, Ari. You have to wonder if Kurtz didn’t know the reason so hes playing coy to cover, or if he does know the reason but not saying because it makes McCain look even more like a crotchety old coot?
you underestimate MoDo’s catty-factor.
She’ll be balls-to-the-wall claws out, sharpened and slicing McGrumpy like – (well, as best she can, given her relative lack of talent).
And where’s WaPo in this mix?
Seems to me that the least they should do is cover the McWhining…
did anybody like weekend at the McCains?
it is foggy here this morn, analogous to our foggy economy
we’ll know she’s really pissed if she drops the obligatory Obama is a girly-man reference in every column.
So McCain likes to censor? THAT is not a reflection of democracy.
Obviously, they don’t know that McCain was a POW
If John McCain can’t handle Maureen Dowd how can he handle Vladimir Putin’s giant head over Alaska?

McCain plans to move the VP residence to Alaska and have Sarah watch for Putin flying over.
It’ll be interesting if she starts showing up on teevee asking why McCain is so afraid of a girl.
I’ve said a bunch of times, instead of being constantly critical of Modo, we ought to try using her formidable talent for cattiness to our advantage! This move by McLame couldn’t be better or more advantageous to our side!
Do they give Gonzales a pass?

MoDo would not have been banned if she had never reported this exchange.
The press was told they have to admire McCain’s fine new suit, made of invisible and intangible threads, and so they lavish their attention to its qualities and intricacies.
Very few of them have the stones to state the obvious truth.
The Cafferty response to Blitzer last week on Palin being “pathetic” said it all. He said, don’t make excuses for her, she was pathetic.
MoDo often enrages me. But, she never bores me. So, all in all, I like her.
Cafferty does not ride the plane though does he? I mean, I hope all the reporters get banned. No coverage of the campaign. That would be good.
But, no cocktail weenies. Naguhappen.
Hi all haven’t seen Palin’s glorious Katie Couric interview. Looking forward to it?
If MoDo was banned for (fill in the blank) remarks, then think of what “transparency” would be like in a (G* forbid, spit x3) McCain “adminerastration. Sorry those last two words stick like glue in my mouth.
MoDo banned and rumor of McCain team trying to muscle Gwen Ifill regarding questions for Thursday night.
Interesting developing dynamic.
MoDo makes wildly messed up remarks more often about Dems from what I can tell. I detect a kind of egocentrism in the DC weenie brigade. Too busy writing “clever” bon mots, or something. And believe me I’d love to see the Rethuglicans get a taste of what Dem candidates get, but weenie brigades side with power always, it seems.
Jane – how do you guys at FDL feel how the opening went? Pleased? Not pleased? Not enough participation? Enquiring minds and all that.
The McCain campaign’s sexist attacks on the media must stop!
-G
I’m not so sure – reading her columns over the years, she seems to me to be much more solicitous of the people who complain about her the loudest.
Yeah, but when MTP wanted to bite back on Carville’s lovely wife, Mary, who did they call? She did an excellent job, in my view. Much better than David, the Dancer.
Remember I.F. Stone, Maureen — you don’t need to ride with them to call them out.
The banning shouldn’t happen, but her emphasis on the trivial has certainly been an enabler of the bullshit of the last eight years.
Sorta like when Dana Milbank made fun of House Democrats being forced to hold a press conference on the Downing Street Memo in some small room because the Rethugs still had the majority at the time, vs. focusing on the outrage the DSM was.
They are all a bunch of courtiers. Nothing more. I wave my hand and dismiss from view (when I am not watching MTP, riveted by the stoopidity, with glazed eyes and mouth drooling). Others can watch the MoDo David Brooks train wreck.
Exactly. Don’t remember Milbank doing that, but it doesn’t surprise me in the least. Courtiers are courtiers.
Iggy!
wow. almost 300 pages. need tiome to digest that.
And to make matters worse, after the removals
became public the statements and congressional testimony provided by the
Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General, Sampson, and other
Department officials about the reasons for the removals were inconsistent,
misleading, and inaccurate in many respects.
but i guess everybody already knew that, huh?
MoDo banned! Am I supposed to laugh or cry?!
That is one nervous candydate. Wus. Does he think he’s now safe?
Idiot. heh.
It’s not like Dowd is saying anything that other pundits aren’t. Without the Clintons to obsess over, she has been focusing on Palin, which can’t be good.
I hope there is some outrage here.
Maureen shouldn’t be traveling on the plane with folks she is covering anyway.
She really seemed to be exhilarated by exchanging a word or two with the charismatic one.
And it influenced her prose. She came off like a sophomore in heat.
Now, since she finally has run out of gas (for the moment) for stomping on Hillary’s battered body, she is turning for Palin for the release she seems to need.
She doesn’t need to be on the plane for that.
John McCain is temperamentaly far too comfortable with the Schmidt-Rove attack and distract brand of public discourse. A McCain adminsitration will be not only a continuation of the disastrous economic and foreign affairs policies of the last eight years, but of the arrogant and debilitating psychological quirks the incumbent and the candidate share.
And WTF does the First Amendment have to do with this? The First Amendment restricts government action. That’s kinda social studies 101, kids.
I think you probably missed the irony in the statement – about how Fox News would complain about 1st Amendment rights if this had been done by the Obama campaign?
Oh, never mind…
Schmidt was probably trying to get out ahead of the gambling report when he started attacking the Times.
my, how the worm begins to turn…

I think it might be a show of confidence in dowd if obama banned or ignored a fox reporter for ever reporter banned or ignored by mccain
