So here we are, just over two weeks into the Obama Administration, and we now have two, count ‘em, two, stories that have appeared in the NY Times on how upset The Villagers are about the pictures of Obama in his shirt sleeves in the Oval Office.
First was this from Sheryl Stolberg
WASHINGTON — The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.
Now, we have Andy Card, Bush’s first Chief of Staff quoted through Inside Edition and The Times’ The Caucus Blog:
In an interview scheduled to run Wednesday night, Andrew H. Card Jr. told the syndicated news show Inside Edition that “there should be a dress code of respect” in the White House and that he wished Mr. Obama “would wear a suit coat and tie.”
Ya know? I’ve spent my life dealing with these type of phony "image" situations. For myself, if I have a choice of an administration where everyone wears suits and ties and are all buttoned up while they destroy the country and the Constitution (but they look professional while doing so!) or an administration that takes off their coats and gets to work and actually does something to benefit most of the country, I will choose the latter hands down every time.
Obama can be said to have taken off his coat to go to work to clean up the pile of crap that the supposedly professionals from the Bush Administration left him. Maybe we’d be better off, if there were a few more pictures of Obama, with his tie down and his sleeves rolled up. It would be a contrast for sure to the photo op world of the last eight years. With any luck, he might even be able to claim, legitimately, "Mission Accomplished" at the end of his term.
And mean it.

If Obama is serious about issues such as global warming, he should suck it up, and turn down the thermostat. Wear a sweater to keep warm. Stephen Harper can do it, so can Barack Obama.
Give me the guy who roles up his sleeves and gets shit done any day of the week. Makes you kinda of wonder what they teach their legacy MBA students at Yale. Proper work atire 1113. Speechifying 2113; friend enrichment 1114; finding scapegoats 3113; vacation options 4113; etc
While I agree with foothillsmike, I know a great many people for whom the image is what’s to be respected. Does it matter to me that the WH doesn’t wear suits on the weekend? Not one bit. As long as they get things done that needs doing, I don’t think a significant portion of the population will mind. If they don’t, then they’d better find their coats.
I’ll repeat my comment at FDL: The ultimate lying image is the official portrait of W in his shirtsleeves that will hang in the WH forever. Champion vacationer, go-play boy, mess-maker and time waster.
I like that he is distancing himself from the “millionaires” club you nailed in your earlier post today. If he can do that by dressing more casually, I support it.
James Wolcott, among others, has always talked about the Potemkin Presidency of Dubya.
Also, Charles Pierce dubbed him “C+ Augustinus”, which, anyone with some back ground in classical history, was very fitting as well.
Very well said.
an answer to “the dress code of respect” should begin with;
“what the FUCK is wrong with you?..this president has more respect in these last two weeks then the previous president amassed his entire two terms”
Sounds like a Zen Riddle Master Rove Might have thought of:)
This sounds like an organized Karl Attack Meme that he is trying to inject into the public mind. Obama does not respect the office which lets GOPers and Moderates with some Racial problems rationalize their disrespect of Obama.
Good Job catching this early I’m sure we shall see more MSM sock puppets pick up the Meme.
By there fruits are a tree and a President judged not their PR flacks to Paraphrase JC
Diary thats to good to just be a comment:)
Should we count all of the bluejeans and cowboy shirt weekends that W spent on the ranch? Maybe if he had stayed in Washington rolling up his sleeves and getting work done in the oval office on weekends he and Condie would have done something about “Bin Laden Determined to Strike on US Soil” BEFORE 9/11. But he had brush to clear…….

Unbelievable.
Once was enough – cannot believe Card is going around still talking about dress code while the economy melts.
One part distraction -
One part “OMG! You libruls elected a
black manni___r and now he’s trashing the sacred Oval Office where only honorable white people have been before.”The more this goes on, the more I’ll see it the second way. A–holes.
They lost! GET OVER IT, Card and your cronies. And STFU!!!!!
