Liberty sez "Somebody save me from those ugly high water golf pants!"
Earlier this morning, Emptywheel was telling us about Andy Card’s fit of pique on INSIDE EDITION. He’s terribly concerned that President Obama has been seen in the Oval Office without a coat and tie. That got me to wondering just how formal previous presidents have been in the Oval Office. A bit of searching Google images found the gem above. It’s entirely legitimate, as a lower resolution image can be found on a University of Michigan site dedicated to Ford, where we find the image dated to February 2, 1975, and captioned as a Sunday afternoon. I pulled the high resolution image from a University of Texas site.
Isn’t it interesting that Card decries the lack of dress code for the president who now is tasked with putting our shredded Constitution back together? Card praises the dress code of George W. Bush, who shredded the Constitution entirely, and yet the dress code was shredded by Gerald Ford, who can be said to have enabled this whole sorry spectacle with his pardon of Nixon.

Ford let a DOG into that shrine of American government?
Good.
DIGG is openThanks, Jim.
There are so many examples of warnings about judging from appearances…
A book by its cover; beauty that is only skin-deep; the old fashined box supper into which all the talent went into the outer decoration; and my favorite of all is the ridicule laid on the winningest horse of all, Seabiscuit….he didn’t ‘look right’. I’m hoping that Obama will be our ‘Seabiscuit’.
Imagine those pants in full color.
Boxturtle (Did Ford steal those from Rodney Dangerfield?)
Are you announcing to all the world that you could not possibly summon the courage to don those pants?!
Beautiful pic. Point well made. THANKS JW.
Dear Mr. Card.
It’s OVER. Hush! Go over to the stool in the corner, don the dunce cap, sit on that stool, and contemplate you OWN shortcomings, if you please.
Then again, we could have had this…

But I guess with the one above you could argue that it meets the “Andy Card Standard of Suit Coat and Tie”
OH!!1
OH!!!!
OH!!!ELEVENTYELEVEN!!!1!!!!111
THIS is so priceless, jimwhite.
cause almost NO ONE accredits Ford for the Bu$h disaster, which i do all the damned time and constantly. i read about it here and there, but no one’s putting it into the humongous context that would point out that IT’S THE TRUTH!
Thanks for this.
I’ve really appreciated your other posts too, don’t think I don’t. I just think THIS ONE needs a damned spotlight.
and
DUGG!!!
And then there’s SlamDunk.
That link is broken, but I think you were pointing to a blog post about this.
Great find!
I’m imagining the pants are chocolate brown with sunshine yellow and halloween orange stripes woven throughout. There appear to be some bold white lines for emphasis.
More importantly, is the fabric double knit polyester?! That is disrespectful to the office.
Who gives a shit about fashion tips from a glorified Ford salesman?
Below is link to a whole rogues’ gallery in Ford’s time. The pic numbered A4154-09 of Ford, Cheney (Asst to Pres) and Rummy is associated with C & R convincing Ford to buy-off the widow and children of CIA operative Frank Olsen who was ’suicided’ (see Google: Operation Artichoke). The widow and children were bringing a lawsuit of wrongful death against the gov and CIA after the Olsen son grew up and hunted down the facts of his dad’s death.
That story has made me believe that Cheney has been CIA from way back. One of the pics shows GHWB as Dir of CIA with Cheney in the pic.
Ford’s Rogues’ Gallery
Anyone there that long — I mean, Ford died, even — should have been dumped in a ditch a longt time ago. It is so bizarre to see those guys and know they stuck around and worked for successive (not “succesful”) presidents.
Bush Junior was a kid then! How could he really have become their boss? He couldn’t. Sick sick sick.
i noticed that in the photos that they refer to richard cheney. when did they start calling him dick?
Good question. He’s been one all his life, hasn’t he?
I believe PETA was formed several days after that photo was published.
Bush made it until Jan22/01 before his jacket came off. Carter and Clinton went jacketless, also. Slideshow..
