It might seem a stretch to connect Dick Cheney and his gracious behavior towards other Senate colleagues and John Boehner, but believe it or not, these two guys are, in many ways, cast from the same mold:
As he [Boehner] launched into his regular refrain about the Democrats’ budget. . . he stopped himself — trying to hold back laughter during his own opening comments.
He quickly singled out a young print reporter, telling him, "You really do need to do something with that hair of yours." As reporters laughed, he joked, "I couldn’t wait any longer. . . .
When Boehner called on the next reporter, he referred to him as "the bald guy."
But Boehner didn’t confine his critique to male members of the Capitol press corps. When a female reporter, wearing her long hair pulled back, prefaced her question by joking that she hoped her hair was ok, Boehner couldn’t resist: "You mean what’s wadded up in the back of your head?"
In terms of behavioral analysis, Robert Sutton, author of “The No Asshole Rule” would say that what is going on here is "certifiable asshole" behavior. He’d classify Dick Cheney’s bullying, cursing out colleagues, and power plays in the same category.
Sutton says that Assholes commonly show behaviors toward people who are weaker than they are, less powerful than they are, and smaller than they are. Common ones he outlines are:
1. Personal Insults
2. Invading one’s ‘personal territory”
3. Uninvited physical contact
4. Threats and intimidation, both verbal and nonverbal
5. “Sarcastic jokes” and “teasing” used as insult delivery systems
6. Withering email flames
7. Status slaps intended to humiliate their victims
8. Public shaming or “status degradation” rituals
9. Rude interruptions
10. Two-faced attacks
11. Dirty looks
12. Treating people as if they are invisible
All of these behaviors are designed to make the victim feel humiliated and lose self-esteem. Boehner’s behavior with the reporters falls under points 1, 5, 8, and 9. He’s getting his public humiliation money’s worth here.
Cheney’s infamous and coarse attack on Sen. Leahy—after an conversation they were having became an argument about Cheney’s ties to Halliburton and President Bush’s judicial nominees—same thing. But Dick’s pricks in this case only operate on levels 4 and 8, so Boehner is getting more "asshole points" here.
Of course, the most profound exponent of “Certifiable Asshole” behaviors has to be George W. Bush, who insulted, publicly humiliated, and manipulated even people like Karl Rove, who figuratively sat as his feet. His using people only to betray and abandon them (the “being thrown under the bus” effect – Scooter Libby has the tire tracks to prove this one) and public and private behaviors ran (and still run, one would assume) the full gamut from 1-12 – Bush is the consummate asshole.
Sutton’s point—and he makes it extremely well in his book—is that assholes are bad for the environment . . . any environment. They poison organizations; their behaviors not only harm the assholes themselves in terms of reputation and credibility, but also are a communicable disease that moves out and harms others.
In business organizations, people who are harmed by assholes or the tolerance of asshole behaviors in the workplace tend to take their humiliation and rage home with them. In an administration like George W. Bush’s, no one will speak up or challenge the assholes at the top. In a business, the victim might go home and kick the dog; with Chimpy McFlightsuit, we ended up in two wars, with the rest of the world despising us.
In an industry that seems to have set itself the 30 year task to recruit, train, reward, and encourage assholes and sociopathic behavior, the financial world’s goal of "assholifying" the entire industry (by attracting and encouraging the hostile and murderously competitive, destroying regulations, impoverishing consumers, and performing the largest transfer of middle class wealth in the history of the country) now provides us with on-going "entertainment" as we see the Oscar-winning performances of the starring assholes as they make statements, give testimony before Congress, and rattle their cups before the taxpayer saying, not “please sir, might I have some more?” but “I have a contract – did the job – so what if what I did harmed the country and possibly the world – we are the smart people – if you’d been smart like us, you’d have been here, too – you OWE us the money!!!”
Assholes.

Just finished reading this article on teen suicide precipitated by bullying:
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/M…..038;page=1
Assholes learn to be what they are early in life. It’s really unbelievable that school administrators and teachers don’t seem to put two and two together and figure out that the other option to one person killing him/herself is that same person might be the one who brings an assault rifle to school and kills/wounds a *lot* of people. We’ve had far too many of such tragedies in this country in recent years.
Bingo. And I’m sorry to say that we have a whole lot of other cultural and social ‘influencers’ that appear to encourage and reward bullies, creeps, jerks, tyrants, tormentors, despots, backstabbers, egomaniacs(I’m using the list from the back of Sutton’s book)and other assholes: television programs (reality shows are based on this concept – the biggest asshole usually wins), movies, the media covering people like Jack Welch and so on. One of Sutton’s points, which I did not take up is that organizations consciously or unconsciously make the decision to tolerate assholes — and it really is to their peril. He also talks about organizations that have officially or unofficially taken on the task of dealing with these sorts of people, either by putting into place more stringent vetting in hiring, identifying them ‘in the field’ and putting them into programs(and if they do not change, putting them where they can’t do any harm or inviting them to leave), or when the occasion warrants (sexual harassment, etc.) firing them. School bullying is an entirely different matter – but teachers and administrators must (must!) take responsibility for changing behaviors in that area — and let parents know that they have to play their parts too. Is it the right thing to identify this sort of kid – and remove him from the environment for the betterment of everyone else? I think with some behavior modification, younger bullies can be taught to behave better — but I also think that older bullies need to be dealt with swiftly and decisively – fiddling around with talks in the principal’s office about ‘not doing that anymore’ just does not work.
Seems we could ‘out’ about 5 of these A-holes in our government every day.
Another category of bully that fits the descriptions listed is the spouse and child batterers. Like the white-trash racist, they are driven to prove they are better than somebody. By their battering they prove the opposite.
Boehner’s tactic with the journalists appears to be his trying to weaken their sense of self worth before they ask their question, so they won’t have the courage to confront him with any truths. It’s being confronted with the truth that bullies cannot tolerate and must guard against (and they explode into vulgarities or blows when that happens).
Good diary, Toby.
We’ve finally reached the point where it has become obvious that the ‘rugged individual’ isn’t a role model, he’s an asshole.
The question now is how to undo the damage we’ve done by accepting as legitimate, a world where all our leaders, even the Chairwoman of the Women’s Studies Department think they must emulate Jack Welch.
We’ve been idolizing psychotics, and there’s still a lot of momentum in that direction.
Dick is a major league asshole. Big time.
I agree completely – I’m not sure I want to know HOW we became a society where assholes are the heroes and people who are NOT are considered chumps. Somehow, though, we’ve got to change things so that assholes don’t get rewarded and reinforced.
Drunk again? He’s either bawling like a baby or acting out like an obnoxious 8th grade boy. My husband said this morning that the R’s remind him of a gang of junior jackasses who are continually in the principal’s office or suspended.
I think parents often get blamed for their kid’s behavior too quickly but looking at the R’s in office I can’t help but wonder how the hell these people were raised.
My son knew a kid who bullied all the time but would wait until no teachers were in earshot. He was a straight A student as was my son. This kid used racial slurs all the time, primarily food references for nicknames in a culturally diverse school setting.
My son learned to talk loud and repeat this kids words so that teachers would catch on. This kid tried constantly to turn the tables on our son. Our son was very good at chess and thus very good at mental chess and would lead the confrontation in a way that the kid would reveal his own bad behavior. My son also empowered the other kids being bullied to stand up for themselves.
It was an interesting social dynamic.
As one from Ohio, who writes on this man’s poor behavior, a great post and most appreciated!
Of course he’s an asshole. Who else would try to foist Boehner = “bayner” on the public when it’s clearly pronounced “boner”?
Hey Toby, when I saw your post’s title, I thought you were going to refer to his behavior on the tame and civilized Newshour interview with Kwame Lastname?. He was ob.nox.ious.
And all he could say was “we’ve got to think of our children” blah blah blah. The looks he was giving Kwame were hostile, he scoffed and laughed openly about Nancy Pelosi, and again, he repeated himself over and over again.
I think he’s outing himself as a small minded bully due to all the heat he’s taking as minority leader of the Party of No who’s just offered the Budget of No Numbers.
Figures he’d start to pick on reporters. What a jerk. I’ve seen these “alpha” chimps too many times and am totally repulsed by them and their pilot fish. They know how to ruin a perfectly good BBQ.
Boehner is classic asshole – he will only take on people who are smaller, weaker, or dependent on him. I would never advise any woman to work in his office – I’m sure he’s one of those guys who sees females as real estate to be groped on an ongoing basis. There is a whole continuum of asshole behaviors; he’s right in the thick of it. On the other hand, though, it does make you wonder if the GOP and RNC requires these folks to go through a ‘university for jerks’ when they sign up.
And The Great Orange Satan – joins me, too…

This is the Kick the Dog syndrome. Common to working stiffs who get beat up on the job, so when they get home, they kick the dog– because they can. What they can’t do is kick their boss, or the other big shots at work who are constantly on his case.
In Boehner’s case, he’s kicking the reporters because his own ass is getting kicked on a daily basis by public polls and other leaders in Congress.
Bob in HI
Well, he’s obviously learned his lesson well from his superiors, who are also assholes…
Speaking of which, does anyone besides me think that aspiring Rethugs have to go through some sort of training, or do they just pick people who are assholes already?
Ah-Ha!! (lights turn on) I stopped short of figuring out who was kicking him.
O/T: I found out something today. Yesterday I posted my first diary here at Oxdown. It was extracted from a 2007 article over at http://www.projectcensored.org/ Under today’s date is the same article, giving the same link posted over at WordPress. So, we have pirates here on our Lake, huh?
My daughter had called me and told me to research it, and since it was old news, it’s pretty conclusive that WP pirated my article.
A bully, a drunk, and an asshole walked into a bar.
“Hello, Congressman Boehner!”
Ah, but the question is: Which one got served first? And did they insult the woman standing next them at the bar?
If Boehner keeps this up, his caucus will overthrow him. They are a restive bunch, those House GOPs, and Cantor is ambitious.
Asshole behavior I wonder how or if t corresponds with Sociopathic behavior and or authority? The more authority one has the more one is able to indulge in this behavior.
Reading this I’m wondering where we draw the line between sociopaths and assholes.
Schadenfreud delight in others misery, BushSchadenFreud (my own word) making money off of other people’s misery also seem to be related.
I thought insecurity was the cause.
oooh Ms Toby, your question hits on something I have been chewing on a lot lately
short version: gooper powers that be do some profiling, and pick candidates from a pool of assholes that appears to have 2-3 major types – with some overlap
Type I: Martinets
Boehner and Lundgren as examples
Type II: Vapids
Cantor, Ryan, as examples (nothing going on up there, simply telegenic w/ authoritarian bent)
Type III: Aryan Youth
McHenry, Putnam, Blackburn, Hensarling, Bachman, etc. ad frickin’ nauseum
(AY’s seemed to have been Rove’s Quick Pick as so many of these have come in since 2000)
note: Martinets are old school assholes and no one seems to be drafting those today – too difficult to herd I guess and they probably want too big a piece of the power pie)
and yes, I drive mr cbl crazy with this sort of stuff :D
This behavior is what I call “FRAT BOY SYNDROME”.
Most of these guys have the self-importance and “better than you” beat into them during their high school sports or college fraternity days.
It’s disgusting and makes me physically ill.
Good point it shows insecurity are all assholes insecure sociopaths?
They start with minds when the minds are young.
In other words, yes!
(story @ 9 — the kid let everyone know he’s a young GOP)
He is over compenstating for shortcomings more insecurity
People who liked highschool would be a good self selector.
Diary on them not giving you credit and call their ombudsman ask the front pagers they should have more ideas on how to handle it.
This is one of the points that I was trying to make here — where is the line between people who kick down, are hyper agressive/competitive, and sociopathology….and how are we as a society behaving in terms of rewarding this sort of behavior.
Malkin and Coulter are Aryan Youth? Or batshit insane that kind of crazy might merit its own category. Republican or paranoid meth head can you tell the difference.
Yep..and then we see, in business(not just in the financial industry, by the way) people who behave in this way get rewarded, are held up(like Jack Welch and Chainsaw Al Dunlop) as being examples for the rest, etc. etc. Here on the farm at Chez Siberia, we call that “selecting for type” and it certainly seems to work that way.
No, I think many assholes are actually delusional..they truly do believe everyone ELSE is a jerk, stupid, a chump, etc. and that either they are right all the time, or that those people deserve to be at the bottom, deserve to be kicked, deserve to get their life savings taken away, etc. etc.
I tend to think there is a strong interface between asshole behaviors and authoritarian conservatism(as John Dean outlined it in his book), but I do not think this is 100% so.
I was principally ruminating on the House
Coulter strikes me as one they would reject – crazy, yeah, but very likely to jump out of line – ’cause it’s all about the Ann ya know :D
I think Coulter is one of those special female brands of assholes – she’s especially cruel and sociopathic about other females. I think she is not alone in her little special group, either.
and, I’d like to draw everyone’s attention to the Digg number at the top — is that great or what? (and oh, yes, I’d love it if you dugg it..why do you ask?)
Where the line is I don’t know the mental health people at the Lake might have an idea, but
We reward money we don’t care how you get it. We do not punish white collar crime steal a million you might not go to jail. Rob a liquor store jail so the law in effect is rewarding white collar sociopaths.
Also Bush failed at every job he ever had, avoided the draft, was socially promoted in college Family money made a sociopath who should be stocking shelves and stealing from Jewel Food Store our President.
Our elite cannot let their sociopaths fail and so they breed or create more of them nature vs nurture or Nature and Nurture?
There are consequences for reverse Social Darwinism.
not innate…taught…pathetic too! would rather watch someone throw a punch
I also think, and others might not agree with me, that one of the factors that meshed very neatly with the evisceration of regulations for the financial industry, and the growth of financial instruments which were so risky, was the selection by firms … basically for assholes. I do believe that HR depts. and managers made the conscious or unconscious decision that they wanted people for their teams who were aggressive, ruthless, ‘winners at all costs’ etc. I think the young people were selected and then their tendencies were allowed to flourish in an environment where being an asshole got the big rewards. They did not choose people to work for them who were concerned about things like ‘fiduciary responsibility’, ’safety for consumers’, and so on. I really do feel that this produced the situation that you see in crime: means, mode, and opportunity –
To big to fail is for business to rich and powerful to fail is for the Asshole/Sociopath elite.
They chose gamblers Bush gambles and never cares if he loses Bill Bennett loses a million dollars is self delusional as you suggested at 33 thinks Bill Clinton is a sinner. Jack Welch always met his GE estimates? Right he cooked the books he doesn’t gamble though thats cheating at gambling. How much of the losing money casino that is GE capital his idea?
Wasn’t Boner the a$$hole that was calling Obama a chickenshit during the campaign?
lolol!
I agree.
Swopa is upstairs at the Mothership!
Obama: Triangulating Between the Banksters and the Pitchforks
Fortunately, assholes remain in the minority. Even so, the destruction they cause is subtle and often hidden from view. A common method of destructive assholedry is a mid-level manager responsible for promoting the most talented employees into inside sales positions, but instead finds reasons to fire the most talented, because they represent a possible threat to the asshole’s position. In the world of assholedom it is also acceptable to pretend to go along with a superior’s ideas so he thinks one agrees with him when an objective analysis of the problem suggests another strategy, (the Kagans advising Bush/Cheney.)
Its easy to laugh now:)
And just in case anyone wants to know more about Robert Sutton and his No Asshole Rule, etc. he has a rather nice blog.
http://bobsutton.typepad.com/m…..hole_.html
The best of “Shecky” Boner!
‘I’m here two shows a day for the rest of the week. And hey, DON’T order da veal, it’ll fuckin kill ya! And don’t forget, DON’T tip the Wait or Bar staff. STIFF ‘em! It’ll make you feel superior. HA!’
Hey John, where’d you get that tan? Giving rim job’s under a sun lamp? Or showing the cabana boy’s where your tan lines end and your little boner begins?
DICK! And probably a small one at that!!!
WOW!!!! In discussing grade a certified ASSHOLES, the article, and no one here so far mentions our most recent Asshole President little Bushie…
He gave all of his minions degrading names, showing he was top dog and could piss down their legs. Like the locker-room 5 year-old jock he was, he loved fart jokes, pranks and put-downs, which he used on the press (they ate the abuse up!). He loved shows of force like the Iraq Shock and Awe invasion, and look where that’s led us.
The difference between the assholishness of Bush and Cheney, is of course that Cheney knew how to operate the levers of power and control over his work in 3 administrations, while Bush was the proud high school bully shoved into the center of the world stage by his handlers.
Both are bookends of the classic bullies of the world.
John Boehner IS an ASSHOLE…. nuff said!
Dugg!
You must have gotten so excited that you missed this paragraph:
“Of course, the most profound exponent of “Certifiable Asshole” behaviors has to be George W. Bush, who insulted, publicly humiliated, and manipulated even people like Karl Rove, who figuratively sat as his feet. His using people only to betray and abandon them (the “being thrown under the bus” effect – Scooter Libby has the tire tracks to prove this one) and public and private behaviors ran (and still run, one would assume) the full gamut from 1-12 – Bush is the consummate asshole.”
See, I did not forget Chimpy – nope; he’s the Asshole as Artiste.
We have been noticing that people we know are hardcore republicans (but not active except to vote) have been getting meaner and beligerent. Has anyone else seen the Limbaugh effect in everyday life?
I’ve been under the thumb of one of these guys for 4 years and finally this year, after having confronted him one-on-one before with no change, turned him in to his boss. Then he read me the riot act for going over his head! Champion asshole! I went to his supervisor again, only to find out a few days later that he is leaving and moving far, far away where I will never have to deal with him again. HAHAHA! I only wish it were because I ratted him out!
Either way, you gave your organization a huge gift – space without an asshole in it!! Bravo!! if you could see me, you’d see that I am standing on my chair, applauding wildly. I worked with one of those guys for five years at a former job. The guy used to threaten me over the phone; he physically threatened me in public in a staff meeting. he was a compulsive liar. he destroyed two other people in the department…but the boss just adored him. Our great good luck was that he was bad enough to stab the company in the back and went to work for the competition, where they fired him within six months.
You sound like a person that’s been on the receiving end of that crap. I know a bit about it, myself. It’s a killer.
i’ve wondered about boners “tan” it seems too orange. he’s probibly splotchy like o’rielly and is trying to hide it.
On Inaugaration Day, I witnessed Boehner in action while he was greeting Mrs Obama and Bush at the door…His actions were deplorable towards Mrs Obama and he displayed the most hateful welcome I have ever witnessed.
I knew from that point that he was going to be a thorn in Obama’s side, and he felt he had gotten away with it. But he hasn’t seen anything yet!
If only Americans would get over thinking of them as “assholes.” They are only assholes if the American people SEE them as assholes. Me? I see them as pathetic. The best example is Bush. Did you ever see him humiliate a reporter/assistant, etc.? Sure. Why do they let him? I know, I know, even if they weren’t really humiliated by this retarded frat boy, they “couldn’t” speak up, or they would lose their job. As someone who HAS lost jobs by not putting up with this sh*t, I say DO IT. Sure, they’ll replace you. Then the next one should speak up, too. On and on until the only ones left are the weak-kneed yawners. (Don’t we have that now?)
Yeah, yeah — I know it’ll never happen, but until people stop being embarrassed/humiliated by drunken frat boys or weirdos with paint-on “suntans”, things will never change.
