Is it common practice for Congressional staff to throw away letters from constituents hoping to have their voices heard? That’s what some of Sen. Arlen Specter’s staff threatened to do to thousands of Pennsylvanians who support the freedom to form unions and bargain.
Specter once co-sponsored the Employee Free Choice Act before he flipped on the bill last month and announced he would support a minority filibuster to prevent it from coming to a vote. Despite once saying he was "delighted" to support it, Specter now is advancing falsehoods about the bill, parroting the extremist charge that it would take away the secret ballot process, which it would not.
In response, thousands of union members, community activists, religious and civil rights leaders and other members of the broad coalition in support of the Employee Free Choice Act have taken action across the state to make their voices heard. In the past two weeks, they have held seven rallies outside of Specter’s offices in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Harrisburg, Erie, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. Supporters of the Employee Free Choice Act have gathered more than 50,000 letters, 35,000 postcards and 12,000 petitions from Pennsylvanians who support the freedom to form unions and bargain.
Specter’s staff grew increasingly aggressive at every event, Pennsylvania union members report. At Specter’s Wilkes-Barre office, where union members and allies delivered thousands of letters and petitions, USW member Tim Waters reports that they were told by a staffer, "as soon as you leave your letters will go straight in the trash."
Hello? These are Pennsylvania residents whom the senator represents. This is the way you treat your constituents?
Hundreds of Pennsylvanians took time out this week to make their feelings known to their Senator, bringing with them postcards, letters and petitions from tens of thousands of supporters of the Employee Free Choice Act.
They deserve a respectful hearing.

I don’t think stories like the one that union leader told will help Specter much in PA. It’s a strongly pro-union state, and it’s also a place where they’ve seen most of the good manufacturing jobs replaced by low-wage service jobs. You have to wonder what kind of pressure was put on Specter to make him flip like this.
“You have to wonder what kind of pressure was put on Specter to make him flip like this.”; the ’spector’ of no campaign funds from the Repubs or Wall Street.
He looks all the more faithless for the flip.
Can’t imagine it’ll help him much with any but full-on Owners. Many of whom changed their registration to participate last year in the Obama/Clinton showdown. Of course, they could change their registration back, but that’s cumbersome.
Closed primaries may be the death of the GOP.
we need spector out and I doubt a union would vote him out and another republican in
this looks good for the progressives if they actually started behaving like one
Okay, Pennsylvania. You’ve got a chance in 2010 to throw that crook out on his ass.
Make it so.
Challenge accepted. Pennsylvanians are looking forward to humiliating the slimeball who jump-started his career by conspiring with the murderers of JFK.
Sorry for the OT:
Breaking:
“WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is leaving the door to open to possible prosecution of Bush administration officials who devised harsh terrorism-era interrogation tactics.”

Saw that over at HuffPo. Some smart WH staffer with the Ol’ Man’s ear is reading some progressive leftist foul mouthed angry dfh feminist blog. *g*
I loved today’s earleir story: “What Rahm really meant to say…”
Not an uncommon occurrence I’m certain, just uncommon candor.
Hey SouthernDragon…take those marbles out of your mouth and shove them up your flaming arse!
Angry comments only work if people can understand them…
Someone needs to point out to Specter that EFCA is a single bullet that could solve various of his political problems.
Ahhh, the fetid stench of troll at the Lake.
What is the matter with that man?
Kind of surprising that one hasn’t been modded.
I have to put up with this shitheel as my senator until he gets replaced in January. Contrary to “myth”, Specter is moderate in front of news cameras only. He has ALWAYS used labor and progressive social issues as a fig leaf for his cowardly submission to the tough guys of the GOP, the southern racist block. Talks the talk, but never walks the walk. Good riddance asshole.
Seth, to modify your sentence: Hello? These are [insert State] residents whom the senator represents. This is the way you treat your constituents?
I suspect the number of Senators who really represent their Citizens, as opposed to their moneyed or self interest, could be counted on one hand. This crop of Senators has to be the worst in 40 years.
Then we’d miss the exhibition of troll brain power.
Sen. Arlen Specter is basically just another worthless corporate whore, ready and willing to sell out the people on a moment’s notice. He’s just another flimsy reed waving in a right-wing breeze on the edge of the vast corporate quagmire-swamp created by the bush regime.
I’m afraid they don’t mod stuff on Oxdown (haven’t you noticed?), so on Oxdown, we have to police ourselves.
Nope he is just another Republican who have masters… The Rich oligarchs of industry who will do anything to keep workers as underpaid serfs.
I can do that. *g*
Yep. Naked capitalism at its best. Slaves have to be bought, housed and fed. Cheaper to pay them a pittance and keep them dependent on that largesse.
On the bright side, this is sure to help Specter get re-elected! Screw your angry, and much larger, voting base in favor of the VERY TINY GOP base has just got to be a winning election strategy.
Who is running against Specter in the indie or dem realms?
This describes quite well
I suspect that much mail, e & other, gets trashed by our elected officials. In her early days, I sent several detailed emails to Senator Clinton. As we went to the same college, graduating just 3 years apart, I included that after my signature. I received no reply, (later I got the autoreply about how much I mattered and how she was too busy to answer every email), and was never added to any communication list of hers. I’d guess my emails were simply deleted by staff.
Specter and his crew have obviously lost their “spectre” of decency. Specter is an employee. Yes? We have free choice. Yes? He should be fired.
