One of Karl Rove’s ever-diminishing talents is for putting bugs in strange places.
Like his own office.
True story.
Told in “Bush’s Brain”… Karl bugged himself and then, once it was found, he blamed his opponent in a soft, passive-aggressive sorta way. It worked. The event created a backlash.
But now, the Boy Genius of the Neo-Con nightmare we all call the start of the 21st Century is experiencing another campaign tactic-inspired backlash. This time, it’s the revulsion of the overwhelming majority of the World and the American Electorate to him and his style of politics.
Awwww. Diddums get smacked upside the head by reality?
Whatever one might say about the last eight years, the simple fact is the Rove…a man widely hailed in the press for many years as a "genius"…is looking pretty darn stupid these days.
The GOP is now a fading relic of a soon-to-be bygone era of aging White folks hunkered down in suburbs and rural enclaves, driving gas-guzzling SUVs, clinging to guns and fearful of Black and Brown people, but ever-more happy to buy anything and everything plastic made in China with their magically free-flowing credit lines.
And Karl played a huge role in that. And now Karl is out there yelling at Frank Sesno and David Plouffe about "bias" and "partisan rancor" and the need to "work together" and discard partisan impulses.
Uh…yeah. This bizarre mutant Egghead student of the Fundamentalist wedge issue…a man who, as a college Republican leader hand-picked by Poppy Bush, held a seminar on how to run Watergate without getting caught (see Bush’s Brain)…is moaning and groaning about fairness.
Now, in all fairness…there is little to be hopeful about when the Dems have the Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum of the banking industry–Sen. Christopher Dodd and Rep. Barney Frank–running the financial sideshow in Congress. And the "See No Evil" leadership of Nancy Pelosi is no barrel of monkeys. And yes, the Goldman Sachs Mafia has people in the White House running a protection racket.
But, Karl, let’s face facts. Your much-hyped, overly-analyzed push to create a permanent GOP majority has…well…turned into hard-to-avoid enduring Democrat ascendancy that, as the demographic trends you once wielded like an axe now indicate, will make the GOP an also-ran for years to come.
You had as much bugging as you wanted. You had an unprecedented constriction of Constitutionally-guaranteed civil liberties. You had the ability to control and shut down dissent. You had Jack Bauer and the media making your case–for Iraq and fear and permanent warfare. You had all of that…and you still couldn’t do it. In fact, the GOP has never looked worse off than it does today.
Luckily for the GOP, the Dems are, for the most part, bought and paid for by key special interests. They can blow this lead. Easily. But they will have to do a lot wrong to make up for the damage done by you, W and the Neo-Con/Evangelical monster you stitched together like self-obsessed, bulb-headed Dr. Frankenstein.
So, you can yell at Frank Sesno. You’ve got Condi and Dick out there trying to prove that war crimes make Americans safer. And you can attack the Dems and David Plouffe for rolling in a Trojan Horse of bi-partisanship named Obama. But let’s be honest. That bug up your ass is a lot like the one in your office many years ago. You put it there yourself.

these people seem to have forgot that there is such a thing called credibility, by which, most humans judge the statements of other humans
and when your statements are at such a disparity with reality, you lose your credibility, never to be regained
and you become a comic figure, a farce, a powerless failed court jester
people like kkkarl rove, they don’t know that
should we tell him ???
there is a dicotomy here;
rove is the single person most responsible for the fall of the republican party, he and his twin (rush limbaugh) are the reasons the republican party has no constituents
however there is a dicotomy, if not for rush reagan could have never won a second term, clinton would have never been impeached
if not for rove bush could have never made it past baseball team ownership
so we are stuck with the damage, the fourth estate has consolidated to a few owners and big business runs the media
robber barons are given full weight in a discussion, members of the kato institute, koch industries have more say over opinion pieces then anyone in the middle class
so there’s the dicotomy, these two pastey faced idiots are both responsible for the fall of the republican party yet the rise in power of then robber baron
Hey JP! Nice job. Felt good to have a good haw haw to start my day. Tho I do dispute the trojan horse ref. Give that guy a break for a bit. ‘kay?
No. Not KKKarl. Mebbe we should start referring to that’n as Missed California or Missed USA. K & the pageant version both have equal cred. in my book of lies and the lying liars who lie-m.
Great reminder article, and I like your description of the GOP!
“You had all of that…and you still could do it.”
I think you mean “couldn’t”?
Geez…thanks, StarCraftVO. You’re right…I missed that typo.
Dick and Karl are working hard to shore up the legitimacy of their recent activities. They want their actions to provide accepted precedents for activities–presumably by the GOP–in the future. The notion of letting bygones be bygones, therefore, misses the mark. This tug-a-war over the Constitution is going on right now. Those of us who think Dick and Karl have inflicted terrible wounds on our system of government should draw motivation from Cheney and Rove to be even more active than they are. Your piece, JP, is a step in the right direction. – Tombo
