From Meg Kissinger, twice a Pulitzer finalist, at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
"See for yourself how the FDA gave lobbyists the inside track on BPA"
We told you on Sunday about the Food and Drug Administration giving special favor to lobbyists for the chemical companies in their review of the controversial chemical bisphenol A. Now you can check it out for yourself by reading these e-mails that we got through the Freedom of Information Act

Where’s my pink bismuth?
Boo, I’ve been trying, but I can’t get the pdf link to open up: http://media.journalinteractiv…..emails.pdf
toma, I’m sorry. I just used your link and got right in. It’s a 155 pages, maybe that’s part of the problem???
A lot of the 155 pages are technical studies. Most of the correspondence is from a hired gun, Steve Hentges, Ph.D., who works at the American Chemistry Council. In most cases he’s writing Jules Smith at FDA. IIRC the emails begin in 2000 and end in 2008.
I wish I could be of more help.
The link opened for me although I almost wish it hadn’t..’g’. This Steve guy should get an award for the best ‘put offer’ of requested information. The best ‘pass the bucker’ and the best ‘ignorer of facts’ showing BPA to be bad stuff. Who appointed him lord and master of the FDA? Seriously, the FDA does his bidding. Why? Near the end of the PDF, when a report is coming out on BPA, he directs the FDA to do a press release stating how safe BPA is. Yup, before he knows what is in the report he tells them to effectively lie to the public and they do.
Not much of a shock that at one point FOX was used for a public disinformation program.
Studies show that pregnant women and babies are at risk of health problems. Women are at risk of miscarriages, also. Girls enter early puberty and boys are late. The FDA never mentions these and other facts. The studies that are inconclusive are that way because of the poor protocol used. The studies themselves are not true studies. They are studies designed not to show what they should show…the truth. If one does not look for the truth with proper studies, one will never find the truth. Mission accomplished.
This is from Steve’s testimony..he refers to April 2008 when testifying to the Senate on May 14/08. He avoided mentioning that heating increases the leaching of BPA. Canada did not ban BPA in baby bottles in April, but everyone knew that the ban was going to happen soon.

“Health Canada’s Recent Review is Supportive of Continued Use of Bisphenol A
In April 2008, Health Canada opened a comment period on a proposal to ban polycarbonate baby bottles. This event has been the subject of some confusion in the media, because the reviewing scientists concluded “that bisphenol A exposure to newborns and infants is below levels that may pose a risk.” The Canadian government nevertheless proposed moving forward with a ban on polycarbonate baby bottles based on a policy decision that the “gap between exposure and effect is not large enough.” Canada also proposed to set limits on BPA in infant formula and to work with industry on alternatives for food packaging.
Canada did not suggest that parents and caregivers stop using polycarbonate bottles while the proposal is being considered. Canada did not suggest that stores stop selling polycarbonate baby bottles while the proposal is being considered. Canada did recommend that parents and caregivers continuing to use polycarbonate baby bottles “do not put boiling water in them.”

Moving now to October 2008. He delivered his testimony in May because he knew that Canada had spent a year and a half studying BPA safety and his time was running out to get his propaganda on record. I don’t think I need to research to know that Steve did not return to tell the Senate committee about this decision.

” The federal government has decided to add the synthetic sex hormone bisphenol A on Canada’s list of toxic substances. This shift is likely to lead to a ban on the sale of baby bottles containing BPA and BPA reductions in canned infant formula.
Starting today, Canada is the first country to categorize as risky BPA, the organic compound used in many food and drink packaging applications, making plastic hard.
In April, when the National Toxicology Program released a draft report voicing concern about the chemical, a debate was started. Beginning that month, several important corporations, such as Wal-Mart and Babies “R” Us, stopped manufacturing products containing the controversial chemical.
The decision to list BPA a hazardous substance was published in the Canada Gazette, the official newspaper of the Government of Canada. The change comes half a year after Canadian Minister of Health Tony Clement made known his plans to forbid the use of the hormone-disrupting chemical.
“The Canadian government remains the only national government in the world to take decisive action against bisphenol A. That has been noticed around the world,” said Dr. Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence Canada, a Toronto-based environmental health group. “
