New Hampshire becomes the sixth marriage equality state today at 5:15 pm eastern time, when Governor John Lynch will sign the bill.
After reaching a compromise on religious liberty language over the weekend, the marriage equality bill passed both houses of the state legislature today and now goes to Governor John Lynch for his signature. The state Senate passed the bill this morning 14-10 and the state House just now 198-176.
With the Governor’s signature, New Hampshire will be the sixth state to grant same-sex couples equality under the law through civil marriage.
Only Rhode Island stands alone among New England states prohibiting full marriage equality. Marriage equality is the law in Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Iowa. California lost marriage equality when Proposition 8 passed in November, enshrining discrimination into that state’s constitution.

Exciting news! Thanks Teddy.
This almost didn’t happen, since the Democratic governor played games when the bill came to him to sign the first time, all upset about protections for churches that don’t like The Gays. Luckily, the legislature was able to strengthen the religious protection aspects (who’d want to get married in a church that didn’t want them, anyway?) and get a new bill written quickly for Lynch to sign.
Wonderful ! This is slow but sure. We just have to keep pushing. Thanks, Teddy
Great news, Teddy! I believe California will eventually come around. Ain’t over till it’s over.
Good News Teddy!!
Now on to the rest of the States and then the SCOTUS to end this once and for all.
N.H.’s Channel 9 is carrying Gov. Lynch’s comments live via Skype. He’s surrounded by a very grateful, if not rowdy crowd.
Gov. Lynch is stating that this is about independence, liberty and equal rights for all.

Gov. Lynch is now signing the bills into law.
Is there any other state ready to pass a marriage equality law? I thought the Mormons and the Catholics were mobilizing their forces?
I’m happy to hear this news from my neighbors from the North. What pisses me off is that the finished puzzle of the bill includes a provision that allows member of religious organizations to ignore the law and to not participate in any same sex wedding ceremonies or celebrations.
So my question is, why are we still sucking up to religious groups who are still stuck in the middle ages?
New York’s next on the list.
New York needs to move now.
yeah!
Churches have discriminated in who they will and won’t marry for a long time, this is nothing new and it doesn’t mean a thing.
I’m divorced, I don’t have a church annulment. The Roman Catholic church won’t allow me to marry. BFD. I have several friends who are Lutheran and Episcopal pastors, all of them reserve the right to decline to marry anybody.
As Teddy points out, why would anyone want to get married in a church that thinks they are an abomination.
I’m not sure of the exact language used either in NH or CA, but my State Senator, Mark Leno, has always included the word “Religious Freedom” in his marriage equality bills that have passed the California legislature twice.
Acknowledging that religions are inherently discriminatory doesn’t hurt the marriage equality cause one bit. *g*
I posted a comment in the comments section of the statewide paper, the Manchester Union Leader.
Support traditional marriage, outlaw heterosexual divorce.

Vaughn Walker Dismisses Challenge to Retroactive Immunity
fortunately, the CA State Constitution is kind of ephemeral – more so than most states’ statutory law. California actually needs a real constitution. Not something called a “constitution” that is actually between statute and anarchy, erring on the side of anarchy.
unlikely unless Paterson somehow figures out to do it by executive order. The legislature just won’t do it. At best they’ll convene a surrogate’s commission in Buffalo or Syracuse that’ll sit on it for two or three generations.
Very good news thanks Teddy.
Obviously, this is good news for NH same sex couples. What I have a problem with is the fact that religious groups were given an out and told they don’t have to honor new state law, which would seem to suggest that religious dogma trumps state law every time.

But religious dogma has trumped the law in this respect since forever, jp. What’s the problem? Now, if the law allowed public officials (e.g., judges, county clerks, etc.) to opt out, I’d have a problem.
I think every state’s action moves the other pending states closer. New Yorkers for marriage equality can continue to make the argument — why are we lagging behind?
