McCain Adviser, Rick Davis, told the Washington Post at the end of August, 2008, that Palin had been fully vetted, including, he claimed, a background check by the FBI. Days later it was revealed, not by Davis or McCain, but by the FBI, that Davis had in fact, lied.
Palin Made an Impression From the Start
Fellow Maverick Survived McCain’s Thorough Vetting Process, Aides Say
By Dan Balz and Robert Barnes
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, August 31, 2008Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager and the person at the point of the vice presidential process, said there was no abrupt change of course in the final hours. Nor, he said, was Palin selected without having gone through the full vetting process that was done for other finalists. That process included reviews of financial and other personal data, an FBI background check and considerable discussion among the handful of McCain advisers involved in the deliberations.
"Nobody was vetted less or more than anyone in the final stages, and John had access to all that information and made the decision," Davis said. "It’s really not much more complicated than that."
No Surprises From Palin, McCain Team Says
Daughter’s Pregnancy and Trooper Controversy Were Revealed Before Pick, According to Campaign Aide
Until last week, Palin was relatively unknown outside Alaska, and as facts have dribbled out about her, the McCain campaign has insisted that its examination of her background was thorough and that nothing that has come out about her was a surprise. "John had access to all that information and made the decision," campaign manager Rick Davis said last week in describing the vetting process.
The process included what aides described as a full search of public documents and videos of her speeches. That included a review of Alaska newspapers, but not Palin’s local newspaper because aides worried that going through back issues would indicate that she was under consideration to be McCain’s running mate.
Among the things that turned up during the vetting process: her husband’s arrest for driving under the influence more than two decades ago; the ticket that she once received for fishing without a license; her daughter’s pregnancy; and a report that she had supported Pat Buchanan for president in 1996, which she denied at the time.
ad_iconHer name, along with others, was submitted to the FBI under a routine inquiry into whether she was the subject of a criminal investigation.
IT WAS FBI, NOT MCCAIN, OR PALIN, OR DAVIS, THAT FINALLY CORRECTED THE STORY
Palin And The FBI Background Check — Updated
01 Sep 2008 01:52 pm
The Federal Bureau of Investigation did not participate in the vetting of Gov. Sarah Palin and did not conduct a background check as part of the process, an FBI spokesman said today.
The Washington Post reported Sunday, citing an interview with campaign manager Rick Davis, that the vetting process "included reviews of financial and other personal data, an FBI background check and considerable discussion among the handful of McCain advisers nvolved in the deliberations.
"In general, we do not do vetting for political campaigns except as it might regard investigations needed for security clearances," said John Miller, the chief FBI spokesperson.
The FBI did not participate in a vet, nor did it run a background check of Gov. Palin as part of the process.
Palin might already have a clearance that relates to her duties as governor. But the FBI can’t speak to that, and in any event, those investigations wouldn’t be accessible to the McCain campaign anyway.
SO WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE PRESENT DAY PALIN IMPLOSION?
I think what we are seeing is evidence that the Bush Justice Department had Palin dead-to-rights on this very investigation way back during the vetting process when issues related to the construction of their home first came to light, and the administration engaged in obstruction of justice to have this very matter shelved. Once Holder had time to get up to speed, it became obvious that this obstruction of justice had occurred. So what else triggered Holder’s decision to move on this matter now? A new revelation that is coming to light re: Todd Palin, to which the earlier matter is connected perhaps?
I assume Todd lied during his vetting interview about the foregoing – and about his connections to the secessionist group in Alaska of which he was a member for 7 years. I further suspect that the FBI’s recent investigation into right wing radical groups in the US revealed a membership list including Todd’s name, possibly tied to the illegal movement of weapons for the purpose of forming a militia in Alaska – whose goals could be defined as treasonous, but at the least, fall under the umbrella of the USA Patriot Act where the definition of “Domestic Terrorist” comes into play.
I think it’s a combination of factors linking Todd to misdeeds that are Federal offenses, and you can bet your ass that there is also evidence that the GILF made efforts to protect him that also amounted to obstruction of justice – and, after all, she does have the benefit of living in the lakefront house that was in effect, built with stolen materials. There is a direct quid pro quo linking to Governor to Todd, as once she became Governor, she awarded a fat contract to the firm that provided the materials.
The bigger story is the obvious obstruction of justice by the Bush administration that led to the short circuiting of the FBI vetting process to the extent that the Office Of The Vice President would be subject to blackmail throughout the entire McCain/Palin Administration, had there been one.
Controlling government actions via blackmail…THAT is the story – and a very common one at that. What are the names of the individuals or entities who sought to control to government via blackmail?
Editor’s Note: Oxdown is an open community forum and we encourage the free exchange of ideas and opinions. We note that this diary reports several items as facts rather than opinion or rumor, and Governor Palin’s attorneys have disputed these facts.

“Johnston — best known for impregnating the former vice-presidential candidate’s daughter, Bristol — “is shopping a book,” his bodyguard/publicist, Tank, tells New York magazine.
“There are still many untold stories about the Palins,” he said. “

Finally, we getting some meat on the bones.
Sarah toast is burnt on both sides now.
She’s a quitter and probably a crook.
On top of being a grifter and liar, also
YOu can see Siberia from your house, Sarah, and the Dud has a boat.
Just leave Levi’s kid in Alaska when you pull up anchor.
Also it has been alleged that the Palin house has the same windows as those installed on the civic center also. If Sarah and Todd used the same materials, it is likely also that they pulled workers off the public project to work on their home as well also.
And god bless those freedom fightin’ troops on the fourth of July for protecting our freedom here at home also. So that we can build our homes with the freedom to use the taxpayer money for good things like our homes and not waste those tax dollars in an Obama money pit that is bankrupting our great country as we fight for freedom here and abroad.
And oil revenues and none of that so-called global warming. Its cold in Alaskah. brrr.
Makes sense to me, plunger. Is it a requirement that anyone running for public office or is in any way connected with government must pass a ‘proficient liars’ test? Lying and hiding their secret scullduggery seems to be their main skills.
From the LA Times Sarah Palin not under FBI investigation, agency spokesman says.
I was sure she was about to be arrested which explained her panicky news conference and resignation. So I don’t know what to think now.
Dear Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina:
Can your girlfriend find this xxxxx an Argentinean boyfriend?
Thank you.
thanx for the post plunger, I especially like this quote from tbe fbi;
common sense, why would the fbi get involved in a campaign, they are there to investigate crime not poor personal decisions
good on them for keeping above board through most of the bush administration, I especially gained respect for them when they refused to break the law under cheney’s orders and torture captives
fbi are gaining ground in my book
The FBI wouldn’t be investigating if the information about the Palins’ was attained through Echelon, TIA, or Einstein 3 warrantless wiretapping.
Good point. Just because the FBI is not conducting an investigation, does not mean the Palins are not in some form of legal hot water.
Amazing that the McCain campaign would pull this off so clumsily. He may have wound up in the position of having to impeach his own VP.
He must have been really desperate to have picked her. It looked to me like she was a drag on his efforts from the moment she came on board. Even the republicans were not amused by this pick; except the evangelical Christains, that is…and the horny, ignorant men.
McCain’s campaign was going nowhere but down, his fundraisers cost more then they made and absolutely nobody cared about him winning
palin was only a mistake in how bad she was but in fact it was a brilliant method for getting his campaign funding and the spark it desperately needed
mitt could not have raised the money palin did nor could anyone else
for McCain, palin defines the term;
“necessary evil”
he had no shot without her, she at least gave him a punchers shot
the only real misstake he made was that he let her go out on her own, without prepared statements
but even there, he did keep her on a very tight leach if you remember so they knew how bad she really was
she wouldn’t have it though, she insisted on going out on her own and once out where there were real questions she showed what kind of intellect she has
don’t forget, that famous interview was actually a friendly one, she got no tough questions at all, the problem is she was so intent on answering the way she thought they wanted her to answer that she evaded every question
could she have simply said, “I am not certain Reagan had too much international experience before he became president, I will learn not as fast as some, far faster then others”
or;
“I read the Alaskan news publications, there isn’t much time for too much other then that when you’re the governor of Alaska’
but instead she wanted everyone to think she was more then she is, therefore the big words she uses inappropriately, therefore the vague references and allusions, therefore, Sarah palin
So is the disclaimer above the work of BMAZ?
That would be the author of a posting with this headline:
Palin’s Abrupt Resignation: It Would be Irresponsible Not to Speculate…
By: bmaz Friday July 3, 2009 1:45 pm
Which seems to have been magically altered to now read like this:
Palin: Is There A Scandal Or Is She Just Abandoning Her Office And Constituents
By: bmaz Friday July 3, 2009 1:30 pm
Two different headlines to the exact same posting? Did you realize that your headline was an actual invitation to speculate, and felt it best to alter it prior to throwing me to the Palin legal team?
I mean really?
Plunger, I reread your diary and don’t see where you presented anything as fact. The paragraphs begin with I think, I assume, I think, and your opinion that the larger story is obstruction of justice, which I agree with.
The disclaimer is pretty weenie by FDL.
Power plays are never very appealing. Talk about in your face censorship by someone doing/writing the same thing…’speculating’. You know why you have a problem. For an educated person..you know who is rather ‘thick’ in regards to that inside job..’g’. I despise game players. It’s like why we really don’t use digg. I won’t say it and ruin that power play because that would really make someone angry and I don’t wish to be banned. You have likely already put 2 and 2 together in regards to that. If not, think about what started right when we were told not to. It’ll come to you. Palin’s legal team can’t do a damn thing. She might try with the Alaska blogger, but I think she owes too much money for other things to try. Political cartooning is mighty difficult to stop…ever…no matter how crude. The blogger, via donations, has almost enough money to pay for the e-mails of Palin’s that she wants. That is really what is behind Palin’s anger at her, I think. Those e-mails might even be part of why she resigned. Just speculating..’g’.
The e-mail saga.

plunger, I’m pretty sure bmaz can’ edit anyone’s work but that on the big wheel
I’ve had my work edited here as well, it’s one of the rules
I’m pretty sure everyone’s disclaiming statements to inococulate against the palin law suits she’s threatening
Yeah, I’m well aware of the chain of events. I’m not one who is easily bamboozled. #95 here led to the resulting stalking, removal of post, and subsequent alteration to include the “disclaimer,” which was more aimed at causing me problems than protecting the site from a bogus defamation threat.
The ham-handed alteration of the headline that encouraged speculation is laughable. Whether this removal of posting and subsequent reinstatement was BMAZ or not, there can be no dispute that the headline for the July 3rd posting was altered to remove the very instruction given to the community at large: “It Would Be Irresponsible Not To Speculate”
Now that the entire truth is revealed, we’ll see what comes next. If I’m not around, you’ll know why.
All pretty amazing if you ask me.
So, Palin’s camp’s empty sue threats are working, glad to see it!
People who “threaten”, don’t sue. People who sue, sue. People who threaten to sue, just want to shut up people.
Is she going to sue a couple of million people?
If the people who actually foot the bills that allow for you to post here feel the need not to be sued, perhaps you might have the graciousness to grump a bit less.
If you feel so constrained, why not post your thoughts on a site that you pay to have up and running?
Our resident Zionist pops up, again. As predictable as where flies land in the barnyard. Compare the comments from him to the ones he complains about. Oh, wait..there is no comparison. Disrupting threads is the only intent. When censorship should happen, it does not. A troll is a troll whether directed by megaphone, or not. How cute..he pretends not to understand the situation that exists..ie..others can write “It Would be Irresponsible Not to Speculate…” and that is deemed ok. The truth is all that matters. Censorship of the truth in regards to any subject is unacceptable on a progressive website. If Modus operandi becomes the norm around here, you won’t be the only one who disappears. If one wants to read lies and partial truths..there are thousands of websites out there that provide the aforementioned.
hmm..nope. If she tries to sue the blogger in Alaska, maybe that will lead to her getting one of these.

No, I don’t always land on you and I’m not trying to disrupt the plunger here by suggesting that he show a little understanding for the people who foot the bills. This isn’t a publicly funded site
and it’s far from timid. What you find unacceptable isn’t all that important unless you can back up your displeasure by assuming the responsibility for the consequences.
The censoring of the truth is never acceptable. You, obviously think it is. There are no consequences for telling the truth. It is not liable; it is not slander. The site asks for donations when needed. Ads bring in revenue. Christie got a new computer from donations. It is, therefore, partially funded by the public that comments at FDL. Again, as usual per your agenda, you attempt to distract from the truth of what plunger said. Plunger didn’t do anything wrong and you know it. All your attempts at side stepping the truth will not alter that basic fact no matter how hard you try.
“In a rambling quasi-legal letter, the most powerful person in this state accused me of defaming her for pointing out the fact that there have been rumors, -rumors- of corruption, rumors that have been around for years.
Sarah Palin is a coward and a bully. What kind of politician attacks an ordinary American on the Fourth of July for speaking her mind? What’s wrong with her? The First Amendment was designed to protect people like me from the likes of people like her. Our American Revolution got rid of kings. And queens, too. Am I jacked-up? You betcha.
Sarah Palin, if you have a problem with me, then sue me. Shannyn Moore will not be muzzled! “
http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/
bb, you’re not understanding what I’m saying. I’m not sure that you want to understand, but I’ll try to explain. Start with that I don’t have an agenda on this issue other than defending FDL. Anyway,
1)You’re taking a maximalist position where none need be taken. Saying censoring the truth is never acceptable sounds good, and at first blush, I would agree, but if you think it through you’ll have to list exceptions to that.
2)I have no idea if what plunger is saying is true, and I’m unsure of which of plunger’s assertions you’re ascribing truth to. If it’s the assertions about being oppressed by bmaz, I would say that the offense seems to be less than unbearable in this instance. I don’t much know about the history between them.
3)If you’re saying that plunger is speaking truth about Palin and therefore the review of his post and the disclaimer added to thereupon is unnecessary and unwarranted interference because truth is a bar to liability, then I would have to ask you to think further.
Truth is a winning defense in an action for slander, but it is neither a bar to suit being brought nor usually a help in avoiding the expense of the suit.
Additionally, truth is a matter of fact in a suit and oft needs to be proven. Can you say that the truth of plunger’s assertions are beyond legal doubt?
4) I didn’t contend that plunger did anything wrong. I merely asked him to understand that his mouth might be writing checks that other people would to pay and to carp less about that.
Nothing more was intended nor stated.
Actually, what you did say, is that you would like me to disappear from this site – as other megaphonies have at other sites. At every opportunity, you make it your job to silence me, or turn others against me. The contention being that it is in fact your job.
THAT is Blue’s point, I believe.
This posting was, to my knowledge, the very first Oxdown of mine that was featured in the top-ten box. I’m not sure why or how, or who put it there, but it was. 24 hours later, it had been eliminated from history – erased entirely from the site. Only after I mentioned it, did it re-appear with a disclaimer that in effect passed judgment and presented, in effect, a legal opinion about the content of my posting.
I have been encouraged to post on Oxdown by many, including BMAZ, and have done so. If this posting in its original form, was strong enough to be featured in the top-ten box initially, then the only explanation for its disappearance would appear to be the threat from Palin’s legal camp. That would further appear to be the only plausible explanation for the change made to the BMAZ headline – which I contend appear to be related matters – that BMAZ can speak to directly.
That an entire Oxdown posting went from top-ten, to disappeared, to re-appeared with a disclaimer – occurred at all – IS THE POINT.
Drawing attention to the fact that McCain’s top adviser lied about Palin being vetted by the FBI – is both highly relevant and newsworthy in light of recent events. This entire posting speaks for itself, requires no disclaimer, and most certainly did not warrant removal. Speculation was rampant across the internet and throughout this site all weekend – as it should be in light of Palin’s inexplicable behavior and words.
As for any possible failure on my part to include the word “alleged” prior to any of my speculation in this posting, this behavior was taught to me by my own government and mainstream media, who have made it their habit to state emphatically that 19 hijackers attacked the United States on 9/11 – when in FACT 1/3 of those accused remain alive – this according to the FBI.
Another example?
Representatives of the United States Government and the Mainstream Media continue to state without reservation, as fact, that Osama Bin Laden was directly responsible for the attack on American soil on 9/11 – this accusation in direct contradiction to the FBI’s own position, which is that there is no evidence to support that statement of fact.
Please raise my profile to the extent that Ms. Palin’s legal team comes after me for this posting.
Got anything on that, macaquerman?
Speaking of alleged blackmail:
Biden: US won’t stop Israel attack on Iran
Now you see why all these distractions are so timely, right?
Any Coincidence Theorists wish to weigh in?
The attack on Iran, by Israel, appears imminent.
Plunger this is big the FOX news support for the Tea baggers anti tax, immigrant movement 4th of july protests was pulled just in time.
Think about it Sarah used TAX PAYER money to get her house built at a time when people like the Tea Baggers are pissed that the bank bailout money which was sold to us as a way to keep our homes.
The GOP is coordinating very well.
Great that would give the hard liners in Iran every excuse they need to keep power and blame the opposition.
But on the plus side it would turn every Muslim against us and Biden will get the blame once we are forced to leave Iraq and Afghanistan without even a diplomatic office ( terrorist target) in those countries.
On the very bad side the troops will be the ones paying for this.
So are any of the Dorks in the MSM going to ask McCain about this Campaign lie? Straight talk Express Bwahahaha!
Plunger you pin your theory on the house and Todd the Alaska bloggers have plenty of other ideas about other ideas why she left never mind the potential family reasons.
Heck Bristol being knocked up again could be the reason Sarah is leaving Sarah does seem quite proactive in defending her family which is strange cause we were not attacking them as much as we were during the campaign heck they were mostly forgotten.
But where there is smoke I look for fire.
As far as law suits go if Sarah moves against the Alaska bloggers who have gathered the pieces plunger put together then we go after the right wing blogs and their money men.
Sarah can try and sue us were all hurting in this economy but the winger blogs have big GOP money men backing them.
Many do not want the spotlight of Discovery in court. Just considering all the stuff said about Jane, Koz etc this could backfire on the GOP big.
The Aryan Nation got sued didn’t they or was it the Klan and look how that turned out.

If you feel so constrained, why not post your thoughts on a site that you pay to have up and running?
Why don’t you shut up and stop telling other people what they should say and where to say it? Why do you think you have some kind of authority to do that? Or are you just the type of person who feels it’s their job to comment on other peoples’ comments?
That really pisses me off, when people go into comments and start telling people to comment somewhere else!
I second that!
“An independent public inquiry should be held into how suicide terrorists were able to carry out the July 7 bombings, Scotland Yard’s former head of counter-terrorism says.
Andy Hayman, who was Assistant Commissioner for Special Operations at the time of the bombings in 2005, is the first figure from the security establishment to break ranks and call for an open inquiry.
Survivors of the July 7 bombings and families of the victims are taking High Court action over the refusal to grant them an independent inquiry. “

Sorry my comment at 33 should read if Bristol were knocked up again.
You are failing to grasp how a conditional sentence works, plunger. What I said is not that I wanted you to disappear from the site. but that you should accept the rather minimal constraint on your post OR post it on a site that doesn’t offend you.
I’m the type of person who really gets pissed off by people commenting on my comments about other people’s comments. I insist that you consider answering your own question.
“A study of the world’s most peaceful countries released Wednesday ranks Israel as fourth to last among the 144 countries ranked.
According to the Global Peace Index, an annual ranking of the world’s nations on the basis of how peaceful they are, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq are the only countries more dangerous than Israel. “

See what the timing of the 7/7 bombing coincided with?
The silence over on that thread after all those dots got connected is deafening.
BLACKMAIL is rampant – yet no one dares admit to it.
The problem with any discovery process is when the absurdists take charge of the investigation. First off, can someone please explain why the FBI would be interested in small-time graft by the mayor of Wasilla? Better to stick with what can be proven, i.e., Davis lied about an FBI vetting that didn’t happen.
ooops, that was supposed to have been a link to this thread.
See comment #50 relative to 7/7 and what other criminals were up to at that time.
Most of today I’ve been blocked from posting at acquarius’s diary above yours. Please..will you go there and tell her that for me? Been blocked from here most of the day as well. Anyone who sees this before plunger does, please tell acquarius I can’t get through to her.
