colin-powell-mockery.thumbnail.jpgAfter being sent home the day before, former secretary of state Colin Powell today testified at the Ted Stevens corruption trial.

Turns out, Powell loves him some Sen. Toobz. He said of Stevens: he’s a "trusted individual" with a "sterling" reputation. "He was someone whose word you could rely on."

The former secretary of state said he had known Stevens for 25 years, mostly in the senator’s role as the top defense appropriator on the Senate Appropriations Committee. In Stevens, "I had a guy who would tell me when I was off base, he would tell me when I had no clothes on, figuratively, that is, and would tell me when I was right and go for it," Powell said. "He’s a guy who, as we said in the infantry, we would take on a long patrol."

After Stevens’ defense offered up a list of 10 witnesses, the presiding judge said he would allow 5 to appear on Sen. Stevens’ behalf. Sen. Daniel Inouye appeared yesterday and Powell appeared today.

Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Orrin Hatch, former Transportation Sec. William Coleman, former D.C. council member John Ray, Olympic medalist and sportscaster Donna DeVerona and WW2 veteran friend Leroy Parramore are a few of the witnesses that may yet appear.
