Chris Van Hollen, chair of the DCCC, released a statement condemning the lynching-in-effigy of Maryland Rep. Kratovil at a conservative anti-health care protest:
This shocking and despicable act of hate has no place in any debate and Republicans must condemn it.
While there should be a robust exchange of ideas about the best way to reform our broken health insurance system, violent expressions are beyond the boundaries of a respectful and civilized debate. With skyrocketing health care costs hurting more families each day, we cannot afford to have this serious debate sidetracked by outrageous displays like this.
Members of the lobbyist-funded, tea-bagging front group Americans for Prosperity attended this event, as admitted by their spokeswoman:
"We held an event the previous night, where this man passed out flyers asking people to join him the next day at the office for a protest. That is how some AFP members ended up coming, but they were disgusted by his behavior. I repeat, this gathering WAS NOT an AFP event or sponsored by us in any way," writes AFP’s Amy Menefee.
AFP allowed whoever organized this protest to organize their members, and those members attended. While AFP went through pains to distance itself from this torrid display, they have yet to condemn the message that politicians who are in favor of health care reform deserve to be hung for it.
So, AFP, will you reign in the violent tendencies of your members and those they consort with? Will you absolutely condemn violence or threats of violence at any events you are part of? Will you pledge to council your members about the law, non-violence, and the history of violent threats such as this? Will you make sure no displays like involve your members in the future? Are you even able to express that level of control over your members?
Because right now, this is the face of the health care opposition, and it doesn’t look very mainstream – or lawful, for that matter.

on one hand, they (congress) dont care who of us are in pain, deathly ill or just in desperate need of health care…they are bought and paid for by Health Business. Still hanging even in effigy is really extreme. He made his point though , didnt he ?
What is really needed is a mass demonstration in not only Washington D.C., but in every state capitol, millions , hundreds of millions marching to show our demand for Universal Health Care …NOW.
They would be more accurately called “Americans For Prosperity Of Giant Coporations, Not YOU!”
And the lynching? There’s some not-so-subtle context. Despicable.
The Rethugs will give this moron a medal and he’ll be the next Joe the Not Plumber.
Americans for Prosperity. Hmmmmm, are these boys straight out of C Street?
The corporatists, Blue Dogs, Republicans, Democratic establishment, the Obama administration, big pharma, insurance lobby, the corporate media are thrilled that the “progressive” blogs are a relief valve. Without the blogs the people might actually march on Washington to demand change.
Don’t you feel better calling out the corporatists? and it’s so easy too. Sit at a keyboard and type away. That’s change we can believe in.
Let’s blog America’s troubles away. Better sitting behind a keyboard than actually being on the streets. The labor movement and the civil rights movement is so yesterday. Who needs people demonstrating when we have so many progressive bloggers in the know.
“thought I’d add some truth to this commentary as the individual personally involved and pictured. First, as previously stated, this was not an AFP or GOP sponsored event. Some of the local AFP people did show up but it was more of a Tea Party crowd. I am not a republican and do not support the GOP. They had their chance in 1994 and with George Bush and showed they are going to lead us to big government as well, just not as fast. For those of you think hanging the congressman in effigy was over the top, allow me to comment. First, the sign says “Congress: Traitors to the American Ideal”. – -
Sometimes statements need to be made. In the years leading up to the revolution, the Sons of Liberty harrassed Bitish officials and engaged in behavior most of you would cring at if such a display as this offends you. … I leave you with the words of Thomas Jefferson. “When the people fear the government, that is tyranny. When the government fears the people, that is liberty” For any more info I would refer you to http://www.patricksamuels.com Last note:when i sent out the e-mails calling for this protest I mentioned that I was going to hang the congressman in effigy. It was not my intent to shock any of the people gathered to protest.”

Hanging in Effigy has a history in this country and it’s intended to get attention, and that can be a good thing if it’s not encouraging deluded radicals protective of the status quo.
I never heard of A for P before yesterday. My first reaction to the name was oh man, they must be some kind of flaming wingnut kooks if they’re going to call themselves something that bland and inoffensive-sounding.
Bull fucking shit.
