The New York Times is reporting that former Representative William J. Jefferson has been found guilty of "11 of 16 counts of bribery-related crimes."
WASHINGTON — Former Representative William J. Jefferson was convicted on Wednesday afternoon of using his office to try to enrich himself and relatives through a web of bribes and payoffs involving business ventures in Africa.
A federal court jury in Alexandria, Va., deliberated for five days before finding Mr. Jefferson, 62, a New Orleans Democrat who served in Congress for 18 years until being defeated in 2008, guilty of 11 of 16 counts of bribery-related crimes. The jurors thus rejected defense assertions that Mr. Jefferson’s business-promotion activities in Africa did not qualify as “official acts” under public corruption laws.
Mr. Jefferson faces a long prison term, unless his conviction is overturned on appeal.
Jefferson had pleaded not guilty on all 16 counts. The counts include bribery, racketeering, fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy and could earn Mr. Jefferson a prison stay of 235 years.
In 2006, Jefferson’s office was raided by the FBI where they discovered a large sum of bills hidden away in a freezer.
The information on the cash, discovered in Jefferson’s Washington home in August 2005, was revealed in an affidavit used to obtain a warrant to search Jefferson’s office in May 2006.
Descriptions from the heavily edited affidavit and pictures of the alleged open freezer show bills wrapped in foil and tucked into frozen food containers, including a box for pie crusts and another for veggie burgers.
FBI agents told a judge the money was part of a $100,000 payment delivered by an informant in the bribery investigation, which led to guilty pleas by a Kentucky businessman and a former Jefferson aide.

BuhBye
Adios, motherfucker.
Glad to see this one go. I don’t favor crooked Dems any more than Rs.
What a bad black guy.
Yeah, a sleazy guy.
An easy target.
Give me a break.
He was playing by the rules.
See you in the funny papers, Billy.
Wish we could get certain Republicans in jail as easy.
This guy was a cancer on the Democratic Party, not to mention the entire state of Louisiana. Now let’s see what happens with Murtha.
But if he was a Republican and this was a right-leaning blog we’d all be claiming he was railroaded by the Librul Media, even though he’d still be in congress and getting nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
The difference between liberals and cons is that we hold our folks to the same standards. If he’s a crook he deserves to be caught.
Just out of curiosity, what does “heavily edited affadavit” mean?
Don’t we get to know how they came on that cash? You know, what the probable cause for the search was?
Anyway, good riddance. Now to find someone to replace the unfortunate Mr. Cao.
C’mon – if racketeering was really against the law the entire Republican party would be in jail. They are the textbook definition of a corrupt organization.
Has anyone seen Tom DeLay recently? He is another one that needs to be in a cell.
NPR stressed the fact he was a Democrat less the baggers and birthers be confused. NPR National Propaganda Radio. Tonight we were subjected to David Frum bitching about Obama’s stimulus plan and John Bolton criticizing Clinton returning with 2 U.S. journalists imprisoned by N. Korea. If only there could have been a prisoner exchange sending Bolton and Frum to N. Korea.
When does Tom Delay go on trial?
Ann Coulter?
Rush Limbaugh?
Is Abramoff in jail yet or is he still “cooperating”?
How about Grover Norquist?
If a D creep is convicted then why not a half dozen R creeps?
Why do you racist morons insist on sh|tting up the internet?
This just in: Fox News runs “William Jefferson (D)” ticker for 3 full minutes before they realize they actually got the “D” right for once.
