All signs point to yes:
On Thursday evening WNET in New York will air an important new documentary by Emmy and Dupont Award winning producer Sherry Jones entitled “Torturing Democracy.” It appears on WNET and several other affiliates independently because PBS would not run the show. […]
According to producer Sherry Jones, PBS told her that “no time slot could be found for the documentary before January 21, 2009″ — the day after George W. Bush and Dick Cheney leave office.

John McCain supports torture by the United States of America
And that is the least talked about, most important fact of the election
Another reason to watch LinkTV.
In fact, he is probably the person most responsible for our country continuing to torture. He brokered the deal that resulted in the president having the final say in what defines torture. I consider that move to be probably the single biggest example of a politician selling his soul to get what he wants.
Not surprising. Unfortunately.
They’ve tried to throttle PBS for 8 yrs now, apparently they’ve succeeded…!
, PBS told her that “no time slot could be found for the documentary before January 21, 2009″
well, at least they’re up front about their sleaziness.
I do have good news about Shrub’s overreaching, tho…!
Plan B?
I agree. And he’s allowed to lie about the fact that he supports torture, claiming he doesn’t. Why no fact checking on this from the media? Are they holding all the aces for post November 1?
Is anyone surprised that PBS buckled under the pressure brought upon it by the Bush regime? Just one more example of how the Bush felons have attacked and shackled our freedom of speech. McCain who was a victim of torture at the hands of the North Vienamese, actually voted to allow torture of prisoners under the control of the CIA! This vote alone makes him unqualified to be President.
PBS is not an independent agency. It has been staffed as an adjunct PR arm of the Republican Party. Of course, this has not happened overall, but in the big things, yes it has.
It’s not just Little Georgie and The Big Dick who have stifled PBS, but also the many corporations who “underwrite” “public” broadcasting who have a say. It’s bad for business to expose immoral government.
it will be our job to point out all the various departments and programs who are staffed with the wingnuts and plan on a strategy to get them removed……. It is our responsibility to work on getting all the rules and regulations changed back and look at new policies and regulations that will work for all of us…..
Following the links back through TP, we come to Scott Horton, who says this (emphasis added):
Sounds like the producers know how to play the game — and perhaps the PBS officials suggested the idea. “Gosh, I’m sorry that we can’t find a place for this in our national schedule. But you know (wink, wink), there’s nothing to keep local affiliates from scheduling this on their own (nudge, nudge).
Either way, it’s good that a lot of PBS stations are putting this up. Unless, of course, you’re Jay Rockefeller.
Here’s a link to the documentary’s own website, where anyone can watch it.
If anyone saw Frontline tonight, I found it rather tire swingy for McCain.

Oh, really? How do they let Bill Moyer’s show speak the truth then?
Sorry gang, but I need PBS in my life right now. No Elmo for WeeRog, no sleep for Dad.
Hey, is newtonuser around? I have a mac-y tragedy question for him.
Damn…. the dog is chasing crickets across the living room….
Oh nozey a MAC attack!!
He was down thread
If it’s the folder with a question mark, that’s a crashed hard drive.
My major beef with PBS is the apparent shift within the Newshour’s coverage, Both Jim and Gwen have caved…! It can be traced back to McNeil’s retirement!
hey jacqrat
let’s go backthread
UH-oh.
it goes back to a few years ago when that arsehole was running pbs – he may be gone but the effects of the changes he started are still being felt
you’re smooth
Hey, you! Up a little late aren’t ya?
Kidding. Hi.
I’m Baaaack.
We got un-evacuated. I’m home.
sure feels that way. They behold themselves to their sponsors
Appalling…I continually have to sit through ten repeat showings of “The Beach Boys in Fresno”, “The Miller Glass Vase Legacy”, or “the Three Tenors”…during pledge weeks. My local PBS station has a main channel and two cable channels…and will soon have all these digital sub-channels. Yet they “can’t find time” for this.
We know precisely what has happened. Which is why I won’t pledge to PBS anymore.

What an f’ing coincidence. If there is any karma in this world those bastards will be investigated and convicted and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Yes, I’m practicing to stay up late for tomorrow’s debate, and well really I fell asleep watching teeVee and so I’m kinda awake.
I take it you are back home, that is good news.
((((( demi )))))
How do you decide what to grab when you leave? would be very unnerving for me.
(((Petro)))
you happy aboot the election?
True, I think that hastened MacNeil’s retirement… Gwen, also, sold her soul down the river too…! I do enjoy Moyers, Brancassio, and, Dhaliwal, tho…!
((((( Elliott )))))
No, I was hoping that the Libruls/NDP would have gotten enough seats to merge and toss Harper
on his fat backside …
happy you are safe and sound demi – we were quite worried about you – and not hearing from you.
There was a time I thought Brancaccio looked like a greco-roman marble statue, I think it was the gray curling locks of his hair and the facial features — like carved marble.
It’s beautiful where you are, Suzanne, I’m setting aside my nickels so I can come visit
gotta guest room and everything ellie – no having to sleep on the sofa
Heh, as a guy, I must demur…! I do admire him a lot, tho…!
I guess the story is that the truth can come out when the criminals tell them it can come out and they are well out of reach of the law….
Haha..hoho
Who’d a thunk it.
Then I’ll save my nickels AND my dimes so it adds up faster.
it really is a beautiful location.
DITTO (((Demi)))… Glad you and family are safe and sound!!
Happy Birthday LS
Btw, this is another hero of mine, and, I’m sure a lot of the fellow pups’ too…
Dave Neiwert…! On CNN this morn…!!!
happy birthday ls
Suz, has Bailey forgiven you your transgression?
chs up at the mothership
Makes sense TV has nothing that would keep me awake so I disconected 1.5 years ago and save money and agravation. G)
Good to know you only got smoked and not broiled. Over here we’re still getting smoke, but the main activity has moved northwest. (But some went northeast, over the edge of Oat Mountain.)
Oh boy!!! Lots of cinders and dirty windows?
Every, everybody…thanks for the good thoughts.
T’was very scary. Glad to be home. The entire land around my community is black, burned, scorched, but the fire fighters saved every house. No losses.
Sorry, I was on the phone and missed the chance to respond. Are we here, or upstairs?
You do know what it looks like, don’t you? We hosed everything down. Oh, my beautiful hills are all black and grey.
For those with dial up, torturingdemocracy.org has annotated transcript with every word of the 90 minute documentary…with specific citations, footnotes, and links…
Oh, man! We’re very lucky, blessed. Call it whatever you want. Fire folks are still here, everywhere. They said they would stay through tomorrow.
I drove around a distributed fudge bars to all of them and thank, thank, thanked them all. They were here from Vernon, Compton, all over.
Seriously, media reform needs to be a major goal after this election. The false “balance” and outright misinformation has gotten out of hand. Instances like this where truthful, accurate reporting is essentially banned is as sure a sign as any that the media outlets, including PBS are no longer serving the American public properly. And don’t even get me started on FOX…
PBS: Profit Before Service. Corporate shills. A step above MSNBC and CNN, but that’s not saying much.
Taxi to the Dark Side did it for me on HBO, I don’t know if I can sit through another one. I had to use OnDemand because I got sick to my stomach at least 3 times and had to stop it so I could get some air before my brain exploded.
After the election it will be time to clean house at PBS and NPR. Both have been in service to the status quo and the ruling elite for the last 8 years. No honesty, no pledge.
