A good, quick summary of the pubic option.
Thanks!
Yes, thanks!
i dont need it explained to me…i need it explained to the Senate, and then voted on and adopted…………bastards
Hey, wait! Where’s the hysteria?
Where’s the blame?
Where’s the meanness?

Wonderful clip…many thanks.
The best and most generally approved and understood “public option” is Medicare for all. The still undefined “public option” confuses people. Medicare for All does not.
I can now explain what gonna happen if the public option DOESN’T pass.
“Baucus’ plan: Fine the uninsured up to $3,800.”
“The Baucus plan would require insurers to take all applicants, regardless of age or health. But smokers could be charged higher premiums. And 60-year-olds could be charged five times as much for a policy as 20-year-olds.”
http://rawstory.com/08/news/20…..insurance/
Is Max Baucus lost his fucking mind?
prolly so
never had one to lose,he is a reptilian sociopath
we have been royally fukked by the party we endlessly worked for, paid for,and HOPED FOR.THERE IS no joy IN MUDVILLE TONITE
We got another option.
The general strike option.
If the Senate can’t get a public option passed, then a general strike gets called and we shut the country down until the Senate figures out a way to get one passed.
im for it
NO. I will rigorously oppose this. I don’t think it works on the numbers and it will fail again. Nobody in the world has successfully combined a public insurance system with a totally private healthcare system, because it doesn’t work. And it won’t work here. That and its not even what we really want!
The offer to our politicos should be clear: take the compromise on the table now (strong PO) or we will agitate to start from scratch with a new bill that combines universal single payer undergirded WITH a true PUBLIC health service and at least Canadian-style subsidies if not VA-for-All. We will take the strong PO or we will demand socialized medicine.
I’m with you, Blub.
Your right, Adams503. We should answer a watered down public option with a very public and general strike. If the Democrats, with their guy in the White House and their majorities in the House and Senate, can’t provide medical care to everyone who needs it, as per the Democratic Party 2008 platform, they deserve to be booted out.
We need real Democrats, not DLCers in the White House and Congress. Bring on Howard Dean in 2012 if Obama fails to fight like Hell for real reform. So far, Obama has shown little interest in bringing about real reform. Since we know he was smart and passionate enough to beat Clinton and McCain in 2008, we know he has the capacity to win real reform, the question is whether he really wants to. My suspicion is that he does not, but I hope I am wrong.
I just posted this on Huffington:
I wish some of you that are just caving and accepting this cr*p sandwich of a bill would understand that this is as bad as everyone who voted to go to war with Iraq. It’s that same feeling those of us on the left get about this. We kept jumping up and down and saying this has nothing to do with 9/11 but no one in the public or media wanted to hear it. The same thing is going on with this bill. This bill doesn’t solve any of the problems of our health care system and then mandates that we have to buy insurance from the people destroying the system. It mandates that we have to pay even more of our own medical costs than we do currently. It won’t do anything to prevent insurers from hiking premiums on a newly captive customer base because it won’t have a public option. When people start seeing their rates going much higher, they’ll know exactly who to blame. This bill is the worst of all worlds and all of these Democrats are happily following Obama over the cliff just like they did with Bush.
I really respect Robert Reich, but the problem is with the message. Whether we get a public option or not, we will pay for those uninsured. The insurance companies make somewhere in the range of 25-40% profit on our healthcare premiums. Why isn’t that brought up? Doctors, Dentists and all healthcare professionals should be angry as hell as to who is setting their pay. Those getting healthcare should be pissed at who dictates what care you get. A for profit bureaucrat is much worse than a government employee.
Here is just one story to think of:
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/s…..90567.html
bare bones bottom line at this point: No public option, no mandate.
I don’t see any other way this thing can fly. And I mean a Strong public option, which we should be describing as a “public insurance option like Medicare”.
The left should have insisted on single-payer and let them bargain you down to a strong public option. Instead, you have allowed a universal mandate with no public option look like a compromise! The sheer audacity of Obama in making it happen should be applauded though.
I sent it to my “friends and family.” Hope they take Robert Reich’s words to heart and tell everyone they know their stand on the public option and share this clip.
The insurance companies will have to accept less profit to successfully compete with a strong public option. That’s the point.
um… negotiates rates with insurers? Doesn’t sound like he’s explaining a robust public option to me.
thank you Casual good to see it posted here
this is perfect for the non bloggers, non political types in our lives – you know, pretty much everyone. this will help folks see the broad outlines on this issue
and Robert Reich is perfect, laying it out so clearly, non threatening, even tone – Ozzie fuckin’ Nelson, who knew ?
Max Baucus, Ben nelson, Mike Ross and all these other assholes are republicans pretending to be democrats. And honestly, how can people take Nelson seriously with that horrendous toupee on his head?
Anyway, does anyone know when the Senate or House is going to vote on this god damn thing?
I wish there were a boatload of money to broadcast this on every network.
It’s a measure of how stupid the democrats are/have been that they didn’t do this starting on January 20.
Many countries spend 1/3 as much as we do and the people live several years longer on average. It is illegal for me to test my own blood in California without doctors permission. I believe to put your hands in the trust of government or even doctors could shorten your life. Self-directed health care is the best and cheapest.
They say people in the Midwest spend 1/2 as much on medicare than people in New Jersey for worse care. Too many specialists and open schedules makes people go to the doctor more often in New Jersey. It becomes a network of doctors scamming medicare. Iowa and New Jersey should receive the same amount of money per person. Thus, the only way to do this is give each person the same amount. Salaried doctors of clinics like the mayo clinic offer the best care at lower price. Rather than insurance, you might belong to a clinic.
1. Remove the business health care insurance deduction. This puts insurance in hands of your employer.
2. Put $1500 for each person into medical savings account or mandatory voucher. Adjust this for inflation based on national debt per person, as all debt is money. Total cost $450 billion for 300 million people. The present system is about $3 trillion, thus $2 trillion is saved. So take the debt in trillions divide by population and divide by 25 to determine voucher amount. There might be other adjustments for age.
3. In industries that use illegal labor such as farming, construction, or textiles, a tax must be placed on the employers. In areas where illegals are self employed such as gardeners, increase county property taxes based on estimated costs at hospitals. Foreign visitors must pay $1500/365 or $4.10 for each day they spend in the US. Thus everyone is covered.
4. Follow the advice of Ron Paul on making you to purchase malpractice insurance when you go into surgery.
5. Pre-existing conditions aren’t important because you always have insurance or member of a clinic.
It seems to me there are three opinions on this subject: a feable minded disunderstanding, an easy to understand true understanding and a sociopathic point of view e.g., how can I cause harm.
I’m sorry, but this is pretty pathetic. Very little time in the nearly 3 minute span is spent “explaining” the PO. About a third. The rest of the precious little time is spent attempting to raise your blood pressure and motivate. But for what? We don’t have the whole picture. Not by a long shot. Very important bits are left out.
I sincerely believe that people here have gone completely crazy ape bonkers over the PO without any idea what their talking about whatsoever. I’m talking about Jane, Jason, and all the rest of the FDL Poobahs who’ve been flogging this crap. They’re damned fools.
So why would I buy insurance when I’m healthy. I’ll just wait and
sign up when the illness comes, since preexisting will be covered.
The federal government has consistently done a lousy job as a provider of goods and services. Our fiscal policy and debt are out of control. Government should be downsizing just like the millions of humbled families suffering from this economy. This ”health care reform” is expansionist ignorance. It worked out terribly for Louis XVI. We need to promote enterprise and capital investment, not launch pet programs for the ruling elite to feign service with a shell game. President Obama, you must abandon this sideshow no matter how much your party hates you for it. Furthermore, Mr. President, read The Total Money Makeover, D. Ramsey; it’s just as practical for my country as it is for my family.
