I would like to apologize to John Milton fans, but it seems the Bush Administration is doing all they can to assure that Paradise will indeed be lost once again. According to this report from the AP via the Lexington Herald-Leader:
WASHINGTON –
The Interior Department has advanced a proposal that would ease restrictions on dumping mountaintop mining waste near rivers and streams, modifying protections that have been in place – though often circumvented by mining companies – for a quarter-century.
Now, for the record, this will affect folks in eastern Kentucky, West Virgina, Virginia, and probably Pennsylvania and Tennessee. I am a Kentucky native, although not from this part of the state most affected. (And the John Prine song linked above is from the strip mining area in the western part of the state.) But I can state categorically that these rules will result in many unintended consequences. Although, truth be told, I imagine the coal companies and Mr Bush don’t particularly care about how this will impact folks who actually live in these regions.
If these rules go through and are allowed to stand in the new administration we are looking at more pollution in the sky from burning the coal. We are looking at far more pollution in streams and rivers, waterways that are not just local to the states I list but feed into larger rivers, carrying the pollution further and further from its source. Pollution in the ground waters. Mountain tops removed with nothing left but detritus and waste.
I can’t even go into the devastation to the forests and natural resources of these rules as I’m not an eco-biologist. Just use your imagination then figure that most of our imaginations are not able to comprehend the overall devastation that will result.

I think you mean unintended consequences.
And I think you are wrong. The coal companies and BushCo know exactly what these rules will result in, and they more or less don’t give a damn.
I wonder when this would be finalized and how, just a signature by the president?
Also, one bit of coal dumping which concerns me is the by product near existing and future coal power plants. One beginning construction in AR on porous ground near what is now a lot of clean water.
Thanks for the catch Peterr. I did this kind of stream of consciousness so it’s a wonder I didn’t make more errors like that.
And you are probably correct that they don’t care. I keep hoping that they will at some point show themselves as caring human beings, even though all evidence points against it.
That is disgusting. I can hardly believe it.
Gotta feed those non-existent ‘Clean Coal’ power plants somehow, Dakine! What’s a few more mountain tops for our energy independence…?
Bush and his Environmentalist doing what is best for the BIG Energy companies and saying to hell with the environment and the health of the planet and the people who live in these areas. GREED at work again. We must work against any such relaxing of the Laws governing our environment. The environment does not belong to the Energy companies to fuck up with impunity and make the tax payer clean up the mess while they walk away with theor pockets fattened from feasting on the Nations resources. The cost must be exacted from these companies with damages added on top to put a stop to such practices. We have already sullied our planet enough and society has an inherent interest to keep the planet as clean as possible. Without Nature functioning we all die!!
The NY Times this morning had a companion Op-ed this morning on Bush environmental rules changes as compared to Clinton’s, Last Minute Mischief
It doesn’t address the rule change shown above specifically but:
So what we have is a nationwide move to destroy what limited environmental protections there are available. So much for good husbandry of resources and passing them to the future.
BushCo. is going out of its way to trash every inch of this country. Thanks Dak for catching this.
It looks like the NY Times has picked up the same AP story for tomorrow’s edition. (Showing on the US News page tonight)
Thanks dakine.
digg
Unintended consequences usually aren’t…in my experience.
Some of the BLM guys here are very upset at what Bushco has allowed to happen in CO
Ha. You said “Virgina.” This seems to be a trend in misspelling, first atrios, then openleft, now this.
Once you accept the fact that the Bush administration has a scorched earth policy for their last days in power with new directives and regs then nothing they do will surprise you.
As I’ve stated before the closer we get to W’s last day the more atrocious their actions will be.
I can imagine that they are. Even though I lived in Denver, I’m more familiar with the potential impacts in Appalachia just because that’s close to where I grew up and I did (do) have family living in and near the mining areas.
But it seems that no matter what area of the country where there has been mining, Bush is managing to make bad situations that much worse.
Kind of like everything they’ve touched the last eight years.
Congress is going to have to reconvene right quick, or we’ll be losing some valuable parts of America.
Thank you, Dakine. Dugg and recommended.
As I stated above to Peterr with his comment on an earlier typo, I did this stream of consciousness as I was so very angry so it’s a wonder I didn’t make a whole lot more errors.
Sometimes the brain is moving much faster than the typing fingers and I make mistakes.
But thank you for catching it. Unfortunately, I think we only get a couple of hours from the original publish time to edit our diaries or I would go in and correct it. (But you can bet I will make sure I don’t make that error too many more times in the future)
Whatever happened to the part of Conservatism — or Christianity, for that matter — that was all about good stewardship of the land bequeathed to us, so that we could leave it even better than we found it for the next generation?
Huh?
These people are nuts.
I truly wish I knew the answer to that one Teddy. Unfortunately, it seems like they are all now channeling James Watt, who IIRC, stated to Congress in the early Reagan years that he felt as a “Christian” it was his duty to make sure the land was totally used up to nothingness.
My mother’s family came right out of the mountains of West Virginia. Her sister still lives in the same holler where they grew up. They just got word that the mountains around them are slated to be topped off. I’ve seen it elsewhere in the state and was so horrified that I couldn’t even believe my eyes. The thought of that beautiful mountain being ground down to nothing makes me physically ill.
I never thought I would see these immovable giants disappear. I can’t wrap my mind around it. Families who have lived there for a hundred years will now be displaced, as the small valley will be uninhabitable. It’s a travesty.
Now he was a wackadoo ahead of his time — he seemed radical then, but he’d fit right in with this End Times crowd.
I remember he said that we didn’t have to conserve because the rapture was coming anyway. These people just leave me bewildered.
I hope they don’t have the money to do it. I hope they can’t afford the machinery, the gas, the manpower, the repairs, the shipping, the anything.
I really hope this doesn’t happen!
They have completely transformed some of the most beautiful country in the world. There is nothing more laughable than land restored after any type of mining is done, but King Coal doesn’t even pretend! I’ve seen too many of these Industrial Giants foul what rightfully should belong to the next Generations. How sad.
The Bush Administration is sure to put in force as many damaging “Wise Use” Environmental Policies as they possibly can, the lowlifes.
A news reporter said the other day that because of the financial crisis that people would take a much bigger role in compaines become more active and sit on the boards. Things would be more open.
Will or should any one from the stocks channels get fired? They interview CEO’s, make length ads on tv and give advice. Is there accountability for them?
Oh dear! I’m hoping this can be stopped by this congress.
thers up at the mothership
Shamelessness redefined.
Thanks dakine01
Bingo.
