For over a year now, a number of voices, liberal and conservative, have been arguing that the United States should not send more troops to Afghanistan. One of the most important voices in the antiwar movement is Derrick Crowe, an activist and blogger based in Austin, Texas.

With debate raging over whether President Obama should send as many as 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, some pro-escalation voices have begun to argue that the Taliban-Al Qaeda connection is just as strong as it was in 2001. Armed with that argument, they say that a limited counterterrorism strategy against Al Qaeda in South Asia will fail, and that we have to decisively defeat the Taliban through a broad counterinsurgency campaign.

If they have limited resources, national activists looking to make a difference in state races in this off-year would be well advised to pick the governor’s race in Virginia over the one in New Jersey.

The notion that American troops would undertake a mission to stabilize Somalia or another war-torn country is neither new nor surprising. But now some analysts hint that disrupted energy flows could also provoke deployments in Africa.
