About Me:
I'm an ordained Lutheran pastor with a passion for language, progressive politics, and the intersection of people's inner sets of ideals and beliefs (aka "faith" to many) and their political actions. I mostly comment around here, but offer a weekly post or two as well. With the role that conservative Christianity plays in the current Republican politics, I believe that progressives ignore the dynamics of religion, religious language, and religiously-inspired actions at our own peril. I am also incensed at what the TheoCons have done to the public impression of Christianity, and don't want their twisted version of it to go unchallenged in the wider world. I'm a midwesterner, now living in the Kansas City area, but also spent ten years living in the SF Bay area. I'm married to a wonderful microbiologist (she's wonderful all the way around, not just at science) and have a great little Kid, for whom I am the primary caretaker these days. I love the discussions around here, especially the combination of humor and seriousness that lets us take on incredibly tough stuff while keeping it all in perspective and treating one another with respect. And Preview is my friend.

First They Came For the Nuns, But I Didn’t Speak Up Since I was not a Nun

It’s never been particularly easy for strong women to use their gifts within the Roman Catholic church’s hierarchical structure and their understanding of the separate roles prescribed for men and women. These days, though, it’s getting even harder — and the debate is not something that affects solely Roman Catholics.

Look at the ongoing health care battle, where the USCCB continues to fight inside and outside the church, to impose their beliefs on the entire US medical system.

Victory for the Greens and The Left Party in North Rhine-Westphalia Elections

By: Peterr Sunday May 9, 2010 12:46 pm

In today’s election in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats took it on the chin. The big winners? The Left Party, which gained enough votes to take seats in parliament for the first time, and especially the Greens, who are waiting for the CDU and SPD to come to them with offers to join a governing coalition.

Rahm To Cut PSA for R-word.org?

(Promoted by jasonrosenbaum - I can't wait!)

After describing progressives who ran ads against Blue Dogs who opposes health care reform as “f—ing retarded,” Rahm tried to make nice with Tim Shriver and the Special Olympics folks. They listened, but were not impressed.

Maybe if Rahm did a PSA for them it would help. Here’s a possible script . . .

Two Words for You, Mr. President

By: Peterr Wednesday January 27, 2010 9:06 pm

In his State of the Union speech, President Obama asked for anyone with “a better approach” on health care reform to let him know.

Mr. President, I’ll give it to you in two words.

Suggestions for Dealing with Reluctant Preachers in the Prop 8 Trial

By: Peterr Wednesday January 20, 2010 9:18 pm

It’s hard to imagine two pastors spending weeks and weeks preaching and testifying about protecting against same sex marriage in their churches, but then being reluctant to do the same in court. On the other hand, as a pastor, I can imagine a very interesting question-and-answer session between the plaintiff’s lawyer and the pastors about their unwillingness to preach. . .

I Know It When I See It

There’s only one word that comes to mind: obscene.
