There’s an epidemic in America: due to the rapidly expanding homophobia tolerated, and rewarded, in our political sphere and due to more tolerance of bullying, LGBTQ teens are taking their own lives in despair and mistaken shame. America is rapidly reaching double-digits in teen suicides in the past few weeks, and these are the ones we know about. Why won’t Barack Obama speak out?

Shouting “Broken Promises KILL!” a group of LGBT and AIDS activists heckled President Obama as he began to speak at a NYC fundraising event that raised $1.4 million for his party and fellow Democrats seeking election this November.

The Obama administration will unveil its national AIDS strategy tomorrow. It recognizes the persistent discrimination those living with HIV face, and will strengthen enforcement of civil rights laws to protect those with HIV/AIDS.

I am deeply struck by the continued blindness to the deeper structural challenges faced by women affected and infected with HIV in the United States, a blindness that makes progress virtually impossible.
