As long as the White House and US Government torture scandal continues its legal drip, drip, it is becoming clearer and clearer that unlike the difficult issue of health care, providing accountability for the Bush ‘war on terror’ torture regime is, politically, a winning proposition for the center-left as a process as well as an end. That is, the drip drip of its revelations strengthen the republic, the rule of law, and the Obama administration as it carries out other difficult reform projects.

Colin Powell, John Ashcroft and Tom Ridge all resigned from the Bush cabinet immediately after the 2004 election. Each had significant differences with Bush policy and was replaced with a more “trusted” Bush insider. How much harm could have been presented if these three had resigned before the election and made public their differences with Bush?
