Jewish poet Heinrich Heine wrote 190 years ago, Them that begin by burning books, end by burning men.

Has it come to this? Do we, as Christians and as a when-it’s-convenient Christian Nation, hate Islam and Muslims so deeply that we could tolerate, even for a moment, the burning of their most prized book?

With the growing anti-Islam fervor that has been ratcheting up as a result of people trying to stop a “Ground Zero Mosque” from being built, I wanted to address the people who are trying to confront those who are making this country more dangerous and who are endangering this country’s national security by writing a recruiting script for right wing fundamentalists or Islamists.

While watching a video of Tea Party supporters being interviewed, I was struck by a man who said that sick people should “put their faith in Jesus to heal them.” I instantly thought of a passage from from the Bible (Matthew 25:31-46) where Jesus specially commands his followers to take care of the sick, the poor, and the prisoners. In fact, he seems to think this is the greatest thing they could do.
