Responding to an ugly episode by Delta Kappa Epsilon, the Yale Daily News just barely avoids saying “boys will be boys” in an editorial dangerously dismissive of concerns about rape culture.

When Congress passed the health care bill, with it came a momentous education reform. Signed into law by President Barack Obama, its intention was to help relieve the ever-rising burden imposed by soaring college fees and tuition rates.

Education reform was intended to help people like Brit Napoli and Lynnae Brown. Subsidies for big banks and corporations like Sallie Mae were ended. Money for poor people to attend college was expanded. Money was even saved by ending these government subsidies.

The special interests fought every step of the way. They lobbied. They waved cash at Senators. They argued that their jobs were at stake (therefore the bill would “take away jobs”), and that teenagers deserved more choices. In the end, they succeeded in vastly weakening the original ambitions embodied in education reform.

The student loan industry has enabled an entire generation to mortgage the future of our nation. This cannot continue.

College used to mean a good paying job and a future. Now it means a mess, indebtedness, no job and competing with people with NO education for jobs at the bottom of the barrel while employers move educated jobs overseas. Is there an answer?

When we all stress out on the political crap going on, as it has been forever, we need to step back and consider our immediate lives.

So you’re a wingnut named Steve, and you’re a father of two college-aged kids. While the older one is a drug addict, the younger one just returned home during a freshman-year break with a 3.6 gpa…and a newly-stimulated capacity for progressive thought. Now there’s some real trouble.

Obama’s proposed budget would cut the big subsidies that banks and lenders get from within the student loan programs, and instead redirects that money to student aid. The president’s plan puts students and families ahead of banks, which is what the federal aid programs should be biased toward.
