Stuff needing remembering

[Recently, a newspaper columnist asked me to weigh in on a new teenage version of tag, called fugitive. I provided her with some insights. Upon further reflection, I have penned this parody, an intentional mockery of this game].

We need to create a new national orgazation with local chapters. A union for all working people but not focused only on workplace issues, instead focused on taking control of our country.

Whatever our situation, we need allies to work successfully for change. We need people to talk with, brainstorm ideas, lift us up when we’re down, and build power by acting together. Many of us involve ourselves in local and national political issues, but what about our workplaces? How do we shift these contexts to help create a more just and sustainable world? Unionization is one key approach. But whether or not our workplaces are unionized, we need to find engaged allies if we want to make a difference.

Marcy Wheeler has written about the power of inflection points. David Dayen has talked about FDL’s growing power in the news and information universe. And Jane has laid down the marker, pointing out that at the end of the day, without independent funding sources you can’t have a strong independent progressive movement. As a founder of The Seminal, where I’m proud to serve up a unique mix of quality political thought by regular authors and diarists members alike, I’d like to talk about community.

At its heart, I believe the power of the progressive movement to change the direction of this country rests on how well we can connect people together.

All I’ve got to say is

The internet is a fine place to collaborate and convene, but it’s hardly a perfect substitute for cooperating and advocating together in real life.

If we’re going to make change, we’re going to have to work local, and FDL can’t be on top of every opportunity for local organizing.
