Could the Democratic Party itself have done a better job at choreographing a populist-free “grass routes movement”?

Candidate Obama rode the populist wave into office, by so eloquently advocating for meaningful change. For him to then proceed to govern as a Centrist — i.e. to bend to the will of entrenched interests, thereby ensuring the status quo — risks the Democratic Party’s hopes at sustaining power past 2010.
