Death and taxes may be inevitable in life, but in politics what’s inevitable is that you will have to face public opinion and the Constitution. President Obama is rightfully having to confront both over the worst flip-flop of his presidency: his endorsement of mandatory health insurance purchases.

Trade groups representing restaurants and retailers say low-wage employers might halt their coverage if the government doesn’t loosen a requirement for “mini-med” plans, which offer limited benefits to some 1.4 million Americans.

Republicans have vainly attempted to rationalize their votes against health care and Wall Street reform as opposing government regulation. There’s no regulation issue in the Creating American Jobs and Ending Off-Shoring Act. Still every Republican in the Senate voted against it. They voted to continue forcing U.S. citizens to subsidize corporate off-shoring of American jobs. The GOP said it is right and proper for U.S. citizens to sponsor corporate killing of American manufacturing.

Obama’s mad about insurers blaming his health care plan for big rate hikes, but he doesn’t have to take it anymore. He can and should issue an executive order to stop the rate hikes immediately.

This week Republicans made a Pledge to America in a bid to win votes in the mid-term elections. The GOP promised to indulge the rich with tax breaks and penalize the middle class with rescinded health care benefits and eliminated regulations protecting workers. When Republicans ran Herbert Hoover, they pledged a “chicken in every pot.” They gave the U.S. the Great Depression instead. The most recent Republican president gave the U.S. the Great Recession, and the GOP has responded by downsizing its promise to America. This time it’s just an egg — a rotten egg hurled at the middle class.

The National Association of Ins Commissioners today released a draft suggestion to Obama on how he should have HHS enforce the HCR reform that requires beginning in January 2011 85 cents of every dollar to be actually spent on claims rather than leaving companies free to pay as little as they can as claims so the the CEO and his team get their bonus and the shareholders can get their ever larger dividends.

Virtually all of the Republicans’ proposals to repeal or “chip away” at the health reform act would make Americans sicker, raise health care costs, reduce insurance coverage, allow or encourage insurers to bilk consumers and further liberate anti-competitive health care providers to fix prices and collude, to continuing charging far more than their European counterparts.

Even with meticulous planning, it’s hard to believe a political party could self destruct this beautifully.
