Jobless Organize to Remove Republican Royalists From Their Jobs

By: Wednesday August 25, 2010 10:59 am

Fox News’ Glenn Beck, assuming the role of 21st Century Marie Antoinette, leads a pack of royalist Republicans who have spent the summer mocking, vilifying and denigrating the nation’s 14.5 million unemployed workers. It is the moneyed class smacking down the working class in an attempt to disempower and disenfranchise them. But the unemployed are mad as hell and aren’t taking it any more. The Union of the Unemployed and Working America are organizing the jobless to vote this fall and to demand help from lawmakers. They’re not out to behead Beck and the royalist Republicans, just dethrone them.

Weekly Address: Wall Street Reform & Main Street

By: Saturday May 15, 2010 4:40 am

In his weekly address, President Barack Obama discussed how reforming Wall Street will strengthen Main Street. The reform bill moving through Congress will empower and protect American families with the strongest consumer financial protections in history, level the playing field for community banks by making sure all lenders are subject to tough oversight, and strengthen small businesses by curbing excessive risk taking on Wall Street, which will help protect credit for our small businesses. As the economy recovers in the short term, we need to build a new foundation for growth and prosperity for the long term. This bill helps to do just that.

It’s Time to Hold Wall Street Accountable

By: Friday May 14, 2010 1:53 pm

Almost two years have passed since the taxpayers of America gave the titans of Wall Street more than $700 billion to keep the world’s economic system from plunging into another world-wide Great Depression.

The Sky Isn’t Falling, We Are.

It’s not the spending freeze, rather the approach to deficit reduction that we should be up in arms about.

Give The People What They’ll Like, Already: Not “Stupid Hooverism”

By: Monday January 25, 2010 10:31 pm

For the Democrats in Congress, winning in November isn’t rocket science; it’s about having the will to pursue survival ruthlessly. The key to winning is giving the American people what they’ll like, and not allowing any of the normal Washington obstacles to stand in the way. But, for Dems to act that way depends on them changing both their beliefs and their behavior. Let’s start with the beliefs.

The first belief that has to change is the idea that deficits are a problem for the Federal Government, that Democrats have to minimize to show that they are responsible. This is a myth, a lie, a scare, or a fraud. Deficits are only a problem when inflation begins to appear. If there is no inflation, Democrats should not even give lip service to the idea that deficits are important.

The Message of Massachusetts: Jobs

By: Friday January 22, 2010 7:07 pm

Poll results show that Massachusetts voters punished Democrats for neglecting the issue most vital to them: jobs. The message of Massachusetts should be clear: If Democrats want to save their own jobs in the mid-term elections this fall, they must create jobs now.

Ezra Gets Simple-minded: That’s a Compliment

By: Wednesday January 20, 2010 4:31 pm

Ezra Klein is known as a bright young policy wonk who enlisted in the DC village, by becoming a blogger and correspondent for the Washington Post with a corner on the health care “reform” debate. Many of his writings have been very sophisticated analyses of one or more obscure feature of the House and Senate “reform” bills, which at the same time are careful to remain within the “village mainstream” of acceptable political prescriptions and advice to policy makers. Many people rely on “Ezra” for his factual “take” on health care “reform” politics, whether or not they agree with his particular prescriptive “take” on policy, or with his “frame” for discussing and posing issues. One thing about Ezra though, no one has ever accused or complimented him because he suggested a simple solution to a problem. He has traded in the complex and benefited from his ability to deal with it. But it seems that he has avoided the simple in health care reform, no matter how obvious it may have been to the rest of us. Well, the millennium has come. Ezra has suggested a simple solution for the present quandary of the Democrats about what to do about health care “reform” legislation.

Reconciliation Can Work

By: Wednesday January 20, 2010 1:08 pm

Earlier today, I wrote about “sidecar reconciliation” and the difficulty of passing it, and concluded, in light of Lawrence O’Donnell’s remarks on MSNBC about parliamentary maneuvers, encountered a number of times each day, still needing 60 votes to overcome them, that Republicans can block HCR through reconciliation if they want to. I said, further, that if they do that, the nuclear option would be the only way for the Democrats to pass a positive Main Street agenda that could save them from blood baths in 2010 and 2012.

We Are Willing To Go To Any Means Necessary

By: Friday February 20, 2009 4:39 pm

Bertha Lewis reports back from ACORN’s actions on Thursday to help families facing foreclosure stay in their homes to dramatize the extent of the crisis and pressure elected officials to take progressive action to address the crisis at the heart of the economic meltdown.

As Main Street rejoices, Wall Street is a basket case

By: Wednesday January 21, 2009 7:35 am

Cross-posted at River Twice Research.

If you were not one of the 2 million people watching the inauguration on the Mall in Washington, you could watch the spectacle on any number of television channels. Flipping between ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS would have yielded different commentary but largely the same mood: euphoria, awe at the magnitude of electing the first African-American president, and somber urgency about what confronts our financial system and the world. Yet, even as Obama warned of a difficult road, the crowds were wildly enthusiastic, and millions were moved. Main Street has turned a corner.
