A year after I returned from a people-to-people diplomacy trip to Iran, I reflect on the state of US-Iran relations and the prospects for peace.

A lot of the rush to enact sanctions on Iran is based on the idea that the clock is quickly ticking down to nuclear catastrophe. Reporting on the state of Iran’s nuclear program is most often rather shoddy, and highlights the scariest parts of intelligence reports while downplaying the many factors that demonstrate that an Iranian nuclear weapon in not imminent.

As the US prepares to lead an assault on Marjeh in the Helmand province of Afghanistan, it appears that we are stuck in an endless cycle of history repeating itself.

Obama’s 2011 federal budget–to be released next week–will be a strong reflection of the moral vision of the President and his Administration.
