You Won’t Find Nonbelievers Claiming Obama’s Muslim |

The uproar by Americans as a result of the proposed construction of an Islamic community center near Ground Zero along with Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington, D.C. have pulled into focus the intense zeal that Americans have for religion. Undoubtedly, the characteristic of Americans that has been affirmed is the characteristic that Americans are dedicated to getting religion right.
A Planet-Wide Explosion of Religious Nutcases – The Human Race, Facing Possible Extinction, Reaches for Help in All the Wrong Places |

An extremely unhinged Alaska schemer, anointed against witchcraft by a real witch hunter, has hundreds of thousands of twitter followers. The USA’s headlines are dominated by inane arguments about a religion-based community center in lower Manhattan. The son of Billy Graham jumps to reinforce hatred toward the president. Soldiers at our stateside military bases are disciplined for refusing to attend fundamentalist events on base. Where has our sanity gone?
Look! There! In The Sky! |

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s the Perseid Meteor Shower! Yes, I know, this is not a political issue. I suppose I could have tortured a metaphor into shape for this comparing the radical Republicans to bits of space dust that burst into light and heat beyond their actual importance (that sounds about right) but really not everything can be about politics all the time. We, as bloggers and activists, must have times when we recharge and get in touch with the world and all its marvels. This is true for no other reason that it makes us more effective in the long run.
This week one of the regular spectacles of the summer will bring its magic to the late night sky. Early in the morning of August 12th and 13th the night sky will be streaked by the peak fall of the Perseid Meteor Shower. I know it is not until the end of the week so why write about this on Monday?

Good question gentle reader! The reason is simple, the peak of the shower is on two work day mornings. So seeing them takes a little planning, to either take a half day or whole day of vacation time on Friday so you can sleep in, or to rearrange your sleep schedule so you will be able to witness this marvel of nature and still get to work.

Renewing a strong and supportive relationship between government and science was supposed to be a focus of the Obama administration, but it seems that little has changed since Bush.

Dan Froomkin from Huffpo lays out info from group of scientists we need to hear from, and who can help GOM Disaster. And this will help with the next disaster, and one will occur, no doubt.
