The anti-choice focus on late abortions demonstrates two major contradictions between their stated point of view and their actual point of view and reveals how intellectually bankrupt their position is.

I am not a fan of anger. While it can motivate in the short-term, it can very easily become like a fire, which has to consume more and more fuel to keep burning hotly. This makes it a dangerous tool to use to motivated people. Not that this stops anyone from taking the plunge and lighting fires of discontent, especially in the Tea Party movement and the Religious Right who occupy the same section of a Venn diagram of the conservatives in this country.

On the one hand, there is the sense of victimization that is required to stoke the anger, on the other there is the need to be tough and bad-assed to take on the supposed oppressors. We have seen the one in the so-called “War on Christmas” and we are seeing the other with the conservative need to change the perception of Jesus.

Scott Roeder, who has openly admitted to killing Dr. George Tiller last May at the doctor’s church in Wichita, Kansas, tried and failed to convince Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert that a jury should consider a charge of voluntary manslaughter. A jury will soon decide whether he’s guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder.

The man who admitted to gunning down Dr. George Tiller in church last May went on trial in Kansas on Friday. Tiller was one of a small number of doctors performing late term abortions in the U.S.

Scott Roeder admitted to shooting the Tiller, but he is pleading not guilty to murder, as Robin Marty reports in RH Reality Check. Yesterday, Judge Warren Wilbert shocked observers by allowing Roeder’s lawyers to argue that their client is guilty of voluntary manslaughter, not premeditated murder.

Scott Roeder was arraigned today on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Roeder pleaded not guilty.

More and more violence is being meted out by people who, when the justice system doesn’t give them the results they want, turn themselves into judge, jury and executioner.

Roeder isn’t helping himself much. Quelle surprise, non?

Bond was set late yesterday afternoon at $5M.

It is tempting to want to limit the rights of groups like Operation Rescue in order to prevent acts like the assassination of Dr. Tiller, but it is exactly the wrong way to go about this.

Dr. George Tiller, one of the few physicians in the country who performed second and third trimester abortions, was fatally shot in church on Sunday. It seems that Tiller was marked for death because of his work.
