Out of the many politicians in America’s democracy, President Barack Obama is unique in several ways. For one, the books authored under his name are actually written, beginning to end, by himself. In Washington politicians author many books, but very rarely are the words their own; the tradition is to use a ghostwriter.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Obama did take some steps to promote his first book – Dreams From My Father. One such interview provides a revealing hint of his early philosophy:

Part two can be found here; part three is here.

We Will Be Watching: Victory for the DREAM Act

The fate of almost a million lives could be decided in the next six hours.  As a voter, as a millenial, as a migrant, as a Guatemalan, I’m writing to say that I will be watching along with the vast majority of those who will determine the future of the United States of America.

If you already haven’t heard already, Harry Reid is going to offer the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act up as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.  The Senate is scheduled to vote on taking up the Act tomorrow at 2:15 p.m.  If you haven’t called you’re Senator yet in the support of the DREAM Act please do so now by calling:

888-254-5087

It is imperative that you focus on these Senators.  If you’ve called already, call again.  If you’ve called again, ask five friends to do the same.  If you’ve done all that, here are some more actions you can take.

The Newsweek Article: Reflections by a Young Prochoice Activist

By: Tuesday April 20, 2010 7:23 am

I’ve pretty much devoted my college career to making a ruckus for reproductive justice. So imagine my surprise when I read Newsweek’s piece suggesting the next generation doesn’t think abortion rights need defending.

Tea Party Supporters Far Less Informed About Climate Change than the General Public

By: Thursday April 15, 2010 7:47 am

The new CBS/NYT poll of tea party supporters (PDF, H/T Greg Sargent) includes a question on climate change:

Do you think global warming is an environmental problem that is causing a serious impact now, or do you think the impact of global warming won’t happen until sometime in the future, or do you think global warming won’t have a serious impact at all?

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it turns out that tea party supporters are far less informed about climate change than the general public:

This meshes with a spate of other recent polls showing a sharp decline in understanding of and concern for environmental issues among Republicans.

In contrast, other recent polls have shown that latinos, veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and young Americans are much more concerned about climate change and environmental issues.

Adulthood and the Right to Make Our Own Choices

By: Tuesday March 16, 2010 6:55 am

What does it mean a group is systematically denied the right to marry? Or the another group is denied the right to determine what happens to their bodies? At some level, even if only unconsciously, it means we think they aren’t adults.

With recent reports of new apathy among 20 year olds, the instinct to blame the youth has once again started.
